Floyd Patterson is a legend and most of all was a great champion. He does well against Muhammad Ali. You have to give him credit because he was always 20-25lbs lighter than Ali. He did very well. A well deserved legend of a boxer is Floyd Patterson. He deserves alot more respect. A great man he also made himself a man of peace and charity when he retired. May you rest in peace Floyd a true man with tremendous spirit. You are the best Floyd did very well and always redeemed himself.
@blite13 I don't understand your arguement, you keep saying "three years off is not an excuse" But an excuse for what? Ali won the fight so what does he need an excuse for? Are you saying it's not enough for a fighter to win a fight, he has to look good doing it too?
@ssimon64 AS an excuse for him not being as dominating as he was before his layoff. They said he wasn't as good, I say, when he was at his best, he was as good but in a different way. He was stronger and hit harder. He didn't need to make you miss as he could now absorb the blows. His moving at lightning speed wasn't needed anymore.
@blite13 Both ali and tyson were the best ever when ali was cassius clay and tyson was in his 3 yr. stint at the damato camp.No other fighter in history beats those 2 guys in their prime period.Tyson of that period would beat the 70's ali. Clay and classic tyson both had the best defensive first posture in history. This is what put them on top.an advantage no other fighter could handle.A special muscle fiber twitching unlike any other fighters in heavyweight history.
But I like Ali better when he actually plants his legs and start throwing combos...those 1-2 combos were essentially invented by Ali...he throws them more accurate and with more deadly force than anyone, not to mention the form and beauty.
Leonard was off for 5 years and came back to beat Hagler...Ali looked really good vs Quarry and Bonoviena in his come back bouts and he looked very fast and was hitting very hard vs Frazier. Joe wasn't going to be denied. Ali could have trained when he was off, stayed sharpe. Muhammad wasn't training hard after Frazier, thus his poor fight vs Norton. Joe and Ali never really recovered though Ali had a big night vs Foreman. Joe 3 was another killer for both.
@blite13 You can keep training when your not in competition regime. But you will never be able to push as hard as you would training for a fight. Compare it with studying, you can study all year but never with the intensity you have a few days before the tests.
@bcibibcibcpCB obviously Ali was not training, he was a good 20-30 pounds over his fighting weight when he was off. You can stay sharp and keep your body used to the pounding and timing...Leonard did it, Ali didn't, using that as an excuse is lame.
@blite13 Leonard also lost his sharps when he came back. Everbody knows, if you are not preparing for a fight you get rusty, it doesn't matter of you train. Boxing, certanly a style like Ali's, relies on timing, coordination, pin point accuracy, it's a fine machine that needs constant training against high level fighters in a professional fight. You can't train it enough with sparringpartners. Bye the way, Ali didn't have the cash to support high level sparring partners when he was in exile.
@bcibibcibcpCB Of course Leonard lost some, but he sure looked good coming back vs Hagler. Leonard was getting old by then, Ali was not an old guy when he came back, he was still in his prime years without 3 years of wear and tear. Using that as an excuse is just that, an excuse. As far as sparring partners....fighters would of lined up for free, yes, even the good ones to help him out. Joe Frazier gave Ali a lot of money when he was out of it. How did Ali repay him? Called him an Uncle Tom.
@blite13 If you don't understand that a 3 year lay off (training or no training) doesn't effect your fight ritme then you don't know shit about boxing man.
@bcibibcibcpCB Of course it does, i already said that if you would read. BUT, how many fights had Ali had by this time? His timing was back for the Quarry fight, the Bonevina fight and the Frazier fight. So using it as an excuse for this fight in '72 is very lame. Ali didn't train for this fight, that is obvious, that was the original point. But you, in your infinite wisdom, tried to tell me that Ali looks poor here because of a 3 year layoff that stopped in early '70. Give it up.
@blite13 Ali had a lot of mediocre performances in his comeback, usually because of his lax training habits. He turned up for bouts with Jimmy Young, Alfredo Evangelista, Leon Spinks and others looking like a beached whale (and consequently fought like one).
@musood6630 Played plenty. Ali could have kept training during his vacation, he didn't. It was his choice to "do nothing". He wasn't suspended from going to the gym. Look at Leonard, he was off almost 5 yrs, came back and beat Hagler. Stop using the layoff as a crutch. He showed lack of training habits when he came back, who's to blame for that?
@blite13 Shut up your sound retarded he didn't go to jail like tyson he got lay off as in he had to fought and do marching to get his boxing right back he couldn't sit in train the government was prepared to keep him from boxing forever don't you understand? Ali wasn't spended he didn't have to wait amout of time before he was able he had to fight for his right to box and talk to the people tp help him.
Good point but remember the money then as good but not great - Ali was broke and did college campus talks for cash - Leonard still had the LUXURY to train whenever he wanted - Ali didn't. Great point but I think it is a totally unrelated incidents :)
@ahgoodmorning I know, Joe Frazier gave him money to keep him afloat. Your theory is BS, Ali could train in any gym he wanted, any gym would of loved to have him, he was too busy with being a celebrity maybe. It isn't unrelated because you train whether you are fighting or not, that's what fighters do. Those who become disinterested in training, don't last. Ali lived off his Rep and name in most of his 2nd career fights. He wasn't a hard worker as far as putting in the time and work.
@monegarand Ali is not in shape for this fight, he can't even get off a combination. He was still hurting from the 1st Frazier fight, they almost killed each other, neither were the same after that fight.
Hey Music4life829! About the Ali-Ingo sparring session. Ingo didn't spar with fighters and try to knock their lights out. He said on TV one time that he needed them to help him get ready and sometimes sparring partners were hard to find. Danny Red Lopez used to get bested by his sparring partners while he was training for championship fights.
I remain firm in my position. Ali was overrated. Patterson could have lasted perfectly and even win the fight on points. Patterson was badly hurt by Ali. They (the judges and establishment) wanted to get Floyd out of the way. This is normal in boxing and it's an excellent example of politics.
Actually, with the objective of being more provocative, I would dare state that Patterson looks better than Ali.

Patterson did better in this fight then the first one. He seemed more confident and aggressive. Surprised at how much bigger Ali was from Patterson. It looked like HW against a Light HW. To great fighters and champions.
My scorecard shows Patterson winning 3 rounds, Ali 2, with 2 rounds either even or for Patterson. That means I have Floyd ahead here.
Floyd was liquid, ducking many of Ali's punches, while being fast enough to counterpunch and tag Ali. Patterson looks as fast as any of Ali's opponents. I think Patterson had a chance of winning here.
Floyd was fighting a good fight. They just wanted to get rid of him. Joe Frazier was a lot worse when they let the fight continue. The referee was probably paid to stop the fight.
Ali was wearing Patterson out and would have killed him with that bad eye and Floyd not being able to see the punches. This was a very humane stoppage.

The greatest heavyweight of all time coasting and using Patterson as target practice, not really a contest. Patterson could have been a brilliant cruiserweight - bastard division though it is.
Oh..man...seriously... has anybody told you how pathetic you sound with your stupid convictions and ridiculous stories of yours about Ali?
He beat the shit out of all those ass holes you mentioned. But..hey who gives a fuck what u say. The MAN conquered the world because of who he was and what he did in this sport. Did you all know that? Of course NOT, ur too dumb to know that. Okay..continue living in a cave, cause that's where u belong. WHAT'S MY NAME BITCHES! WHAT'S MY NAME? HUH?
You can watch Floyd knocking out Cooper here on youtube now. You can also watch Cooper almost knocking out Clay. I can't find Ingo with Cooper fight, but you can watch Ingo Knocking out Eddie Machen(who gave a even fight to prime Liston) Floyd also toyed Machen. See,they are all great fighters. Floyd and Ingo in thier prime would have been very dangerous against prime Clay/Ali.
Excuse me? Ali (then Clay) did box Johannson while the latter was in training, and just after he'd won the Olympic metal. He made Ingo look silly. I don't know what planet you Ali haters live on, but to deny that man's greatness is just ridiculous.
You gatta bad mouth Floyd all over the place? A pripm"Clay"in '64 almost got KOd by Henry Cooper. If not for the Angello's foul play he would have been out. Both Floyd and Ingo knocked Cooper out cold with one punch. Did you know that?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I know boxing, that's why I'm here. Also, again, you got your facts wrong. Clay fought Cooper in 1963, not 64. He also was up at the count of 3. 3, Neon, 3. Angelo pulled something in the corner between rounds, which gave him a little rest, sure. But Cooper was on his way to losing. Get real. Think I'll put on both Liston-Patterson fights, that should take up about 5 minutes. HA !!
Oh.You are right. It was in 63 and thier rematch was in 66. Cooper gave Ali very hard time in the both fights. Floyd and Ingo toyed with Cooper and knocked his light out with single chosen right hand.
ali toyed with liston twice and patterson was koed twice by liston, styles make fights so your logic is flawed.how 2 fighters do against a common opponent doesnt tell you whos better or who will win
Oh, he did not! Clay (Ali) boxed Cooper silly, but got nailed with a punch in the first fight. It happened with all of the best fighters....Louis (Walcott fight), Marciano (Walcott, Moore), Dempsey (Firpo)...why is Ali any different? He came back and won, as all great champs do.
@blite13 mate you obviously have never played a sport.
Boxing primes range from 26-28. Ali was layed off during that period.
If you did any sport you would know 3 years of doing nothing
would take a massive toll, even 4months would. Ali relied
on reflexes and abnormal handspeed that needed professional
training to sustain. As such 3 years of doing nothing destroyed
the former and reduced some of the latter.

i completly agree man i gave him the first 4 rounds. disgraceful stoppage
narudduran 2 years ago
Ali was wearing Patterson out and would have killed him with that bad eye and Floyd not being able to see the punches. This was a very humane stoppage.

The greatest heavyweight of all time coasting and using Patterson as target practice, not really a contest. Patterson could have been a brilliant cruiserweight - bastard division though it is.

If you were Ali would u use Patterson for target practice???

He still put in a good effort and in some ways redeemed him self for his prior loss.
A brave effort, but he was out gunned by the bigger and better fighter.
I feel in '65 he did have a back injury as his movement clearly was not all there as it was prior and subsequent to that fight.

thanks for the upload; Floyd must have really wanted some payback for 1965. Instead, he picked a bad night to show up. This wasn't Ingo, Floyd.

You gatta bad mouth Floyd all over the place? A pripm"Clay"in '64 almost got KOd by Henry Cooper. If not for the Angello's foul play he would have been out. Both Floyd and Ingo knocked Cooper out cold with one punch. Did you know that?

I know boxing, that's why I'm here. Also, again, you got your facts wrong. Clay fought Cooper in 1963, not 64. He also was up at the count of 3. 3, Neon, 3. Angelo pulled something in the corner between rounds, which gave him a little rest, sure. But Cooper was on his way to losing. Get real. Think I'll put on both Liston-Patterson fights, that should take up about 5 minutes. HA !!

Ali/Clay only had one fight in '64 and that was against Liston.
muskratrowdy 2 years ago
Oh.You are right. It was in 63 and thier rematch was in 66. Cooper gave Ali very hard time in the both fights. Floyd and Ingo toyed with Cooper and knocked his light out with single chosen right hand.
NeonLeon78 2 years ago
ali toyed with liston twice and patterson was koed twice by liston, styles make fights so your logic is flawed.how 2 fighters do against a common opponent doesnt tell you whos better or who will win
sugarnadf 2 years ago
Oh, he did not! Clay (Ali) boxed Cooper silly, but got nailed with a punch in the first fight. It happened with all of the best fighters....Louis (Walcott fight), Marciano (Walcott, Moore), Dempsey (Firpo)...why is Ali any different? He came back and won, as all great champs do.
