ha i was going to ask the same ... hmmm ns #5034 is in NC but it's brother # 5049 does the conniaut yard jobs in conniaut ohio. sometimes it will have a caboose to mentor lumber in mentor ohio and head to fairport ohio for some other cars too...
Love those high hoods. They used come by my house when I lived in Roxboro. The Norfolk and Western would roll through on the old L and D line heaed to Durham,NC. Man I miss those days.
@redsoxfan423 Maybe you can clarify something for me, I know NS got the HH units from The Southern, but why did the order them with HH's? I suppose you could put a steam generator there but they were used for freight.
@AlcoFan2010 N&W also had highhoods, although their most recent SD40-2s came with the low nose. Look for the SD40-2s in the 6000s that have not been redone by NS. As to why Southern bought the units with a high nose, I'm not sure. I read around on the internet, and the only thing I saw was to get through a union loophole about the front of the engine or something.
@redsoxfan423 Funny thing about that. yesterday i was tainwatching where i live in upstate NY and ui caught NS HH SD40-2 #6012 and a HH GP38-2 on a local freight. the GP38-2 had Norfolk and Western written on it.
I saw a ex-sou SD40-2HH two years back on a local In Radford, VA. It too had the NS paint wearing off revealing the original Southern decal underneath
Don't know what he meant by running long hood forward. The pic that I watched it was running short hood forward. If I remember the restroom is in the high hood along with tanks that hold the sand.
the proper way to run the HH is technically long hood forward...I have no idea what's inside the HH. I don't know the outcome of the derailment, since I had to go right after, but he said something like streeter switch (I can't remember the exact name)
the only reason why the N&W and Southern had HH loco's was that when they were run Long Hood Forward they would be better protected in case of a train verses car at a crossing, then in the 70's N&W went short hood first on SD40-2's and GE's but Southern did not

Wish you had videoed the switch changing.
Any news about the engine you caught derailing? Only the first engine derailed?
Is "HH" high hood?
What is inside?
Why not make it lower to allow better visibility?
Thank you.
robertgift 3 years ago
not sure about the derailment...
HH does mean high hood
What do you mean by the last 2 questions?
redsoxfan423 3 years ago
Why not make the high hood lower to improve visibility?
What is inside the high hood?
My great uncle was a steam locomotive engineer. Said the boiler of his huge 4-8-4 locomotive was such a visual impediment.
What was the outcome of your derailment video?
Appears that only the first engine derailed.
Was there any damage?
Were these three locomotives in that derailment?
Did the engineer say "Straight up switch."?
Please keep your well done videos coming.
Thank you.

Thanks.
Why long hood forward? Protection if a collision?
Then one has the same visibility problems as a steam locomotive!
Does streeter switch mean something?
Was it straight away switch?
Thank you.
robertgift 3 years ago
It's just the name of the switch...as for long hood forward, I don't know the advantages behind the design

redsoxfan423 3 years ago
