Outrageous that you discuss Justin Bieber or Metallica instead of what is Ernest Hemingway's beautiful masterpiece. The book is true art. Papa Hem would say "I obscenity in the milk of you BIEBER!"
@happyrAGEeee You can continue to miss out on life then, you fucking retard. This is one of the greatest books ever written and probably one of the most famous. Your loss if you think this is just some cheesy bullshit.
@happyrAGEeee Hey genius- the Metallica song was inspired by and dedicated to the book; just like this movie. Know what you're shooting your mouth off about before doing so.
Thanks for sharing this! I have always felt this was a model cinematic adaptation of a novel. It would be hard to imagine anyone adapting it better. The writing, directing, cinematography, acting, and music were all top-flight.
@goatFUCKER666 ...ah... ok mate, "i obscenity in the milk of thy revolution" is exactly what Hemingway wrote and he wrote it with a reason! see hemingway was, well is, known for the extensive use of archaisms, transliterations and "false friends" to convey the foreign tongue spoken by his characters. for instance - thou, or thy (i mean who would say that in the XX century?) and as for "i obscenity in the milk" comes from the spanish "me cago en la leche"...
@goatFUCKER666 ...basically means - i piss on your crapy revolution! or something like that! and, no "emergenyexit23" Hmingway was NOT TRYING TO BE just polite! if Hemingway would somehow read what you've written, he would "reduce you to tears with a left hook" :D:D
This was filmed in the early 40s...the wounds from the Spanish Civil War were still quite raw. I don't think Generalissimo Franco would have appreciated this tribute to his enemies being made in Spain -_-
@solcario2 Spanish Civil War was before WWII: it finished in August 1939, whereas WWII started in September 1939. That said, the two are closely linked, and the Civil War is often said to be the "First Battle" of WWII as Germany and Italy supported Franco's Right Wing with modern tactics and artillery/shelling etc

Funny, that's exactly as I pictured Pilar, more or less. Not as ugly as Rafael and herself made her sound, but not super attractive.

All copies are still like that. Mr Hmingway was just polite. His characters werent though...
emergenyexit23 2 years ago
question??
i have the a copy of the book from 1944that belonged to my great grandfather and in the place of cuss words it has "obscene"
like "i obscenity in the milk of thy revolution"
were all the copies like that??
i was thinking it was maybe a school copy that was printed censored
goatFUCKER666 2 years ago
My 1995 edition contains the same language. I assume Hemingway wrote it that way, but I don't know for certain.

In Spain in 1943 in the post-war with the Franco dictatorship.... filming a movie about "the enemy" was unimaginable
