I remember reading a story that said as all hell brokr loose on stage around him,John stood and kept it all together for the sake of his musical pride.
In times every bassman had a sound with no brilliance at all, The Ox showed me how a bass should sound like. I am now 34 years on stage - and I was right making Ox my great influence. I love his sound hammering with the fingers of his right hand - and I own two Buzzard - basses, a Thunderbird and my own "Frankenbass" to have a sound like he had - with slightly smaller setup.
One of their best songs, never got the hype it deserves. Also one of the best bands ever, so much talent on one stage. Their music keeps getting better, how many other bands can say that?
@ultramagnus58 Oh yeah! He can sing better than him and play an instrument, AND WRITE SONGS! And it is a guitar in his hands! He had the best tone ever too man.
@ronnied828 I THINK THAT MAY BE HIS PRIMARY RIDE CYMBOL 2ND FROM THE LEFT AND HES USING THE SHOULDER OF HIS DRUMSTICK TO "CRASH IT" JUST LIKE KEITH MOON DID REMEMBER UNCLE KEITH TAUGHT THE YOUNG ZAC STARKEY (THE SON OF RINGO STARR) TO DRUM !!!!!!
Pete is on fire nowadays, he's really become a great guitarist indeed. However, nothing beats John's pick to finger transfer. Man, you just can make those fingers stop when they've started hammering.
Rowdiest version of this I've ever heard, and I've heard a few. They tear it up in this song. They got better as they got older, an unusual trait in Rock.
@FFEMT152 hehehe i love that scene in Tommy film, in the pinball battle, where everyone is detroying instruments and getting wild, and he just stands there, playing his musical magic. The OX, for sure!
@FFEMT152 I think the contrast that John created opposite Keith and Pete, was a far more interesting sight than just 4 longhaired guys headbanging can ever be.
Technicaly its the english accent lol. Scots sound compeletely diferent but yeah I agree amazing song and good to see roger Helping out a bit as well (Y)
And pete's playing a shoreline gold American Custom Shop reissue with a Piezo pickup/transducer installed. Note the xtra knob near the trem. I might do that mod to one of my strats. I notice that kind of shit, go figure.
Having a piezo in an electric guitar is pricey but pretty sweet. His Strat is a stereo output, the electric pickups are sent through one end of a stereo y-splitter to his Fender amps. The acoustic Piezo pickup is sent through the other end of the y-splitter direct to the mixing board.
yep.. i feel like you're driving across the country to murder me, and stopping at every starbucks along the way to drink more coffee and reply to me on youtube... but yes, really.
The reason why I don't resent Zak Starkey as the Who's drummer is because Moonie taught him to play. There is really NO drummer fit for the Who except if he was taught by the Loon.
Entwistle was a great singer back in day. But on the other hand, Keith Moon was the worst singer out of the band. But concidering he was a crazy guy he still is hilarious in singing Bell Boy.
Unfortunately this was the ravages of his cocaine habit, which Enwhistle never kicked. The powder wrecked his heart and in the end, this is what killed him. Sad.
If anyone dares to say that John Enwhistle wasn't one of the greatest, if not THE greatest bassist in rock history: WATCH THIS VIDEO! You see the speed, the precision, the technique, it's all in the video!
You See Folks: They Called Him "Thunder Fingers" FOR A REASON.
The Ox was among the first bassists in the rock era to play it not as a backing instrument, but at the front, along with the 6-string guitar & vocals. He showed that the bass could lead a song & not just provide rhythm or beats.
I recently listened to several isolated bass tracks of Who songs, by John Entwistle. God, it is absolutely awesome.
