  • There is nothing wrong with carefully doing some investigation of the world around us including animals. At least some of us are paying attention and learning what we can. Let's not put down research. This told them a lot.

  • Let animals stay in the wild dumb fucks..Thats why we have more then likee 100 endargered animals..Stop shooting/abusing/keeping them, Go play WoW to make up your time instead of killing things.

  • Donna's soooo cutttee!

    yeah im an elephant fan

  • this is not science, this is stupid!! every animal can learn to lift a leg when they feel the ground shake if you feed them treats. I'm disappointed in nat geo for being part of such crap.

  • how i hate those commercials

  • you national geo fuck you suck with your damn comercials

  • National geographic is horrible if people who swear on it are voted high!

  • @SelenaGomezzgirl by "National geographic" you mean people that commented to their videos

  • It's like they're training her to "communicate" a certain way using positive reinforcement and taxpayers' money. In the end, they must have only successfully tampered with her natural instincts.

    Arggggh!

  • Basicly, what Dana is learning here is to lift her foot when she feels a seismic wave.

  • i bet humans are completely wrong and the elephant is like "no we dont talk with our feet you fuckface! we can read eachothers thoughts!"

  • Let me out of this cage is spot on...just wtaching this makes me sick

  • @misszoey1021 boo hoo

  • Cool!

  • i think she's just playing those researchers to give her treats

  • lol

  • @Representative45 if she gets a treat every time she lifts her foot, she would lift her foot after every whistle is blown. Sometimes the guy blew the whistle and no waves were emitted. In those instances the elephant didn't lift her foot.

  • @wclark316 I don't think so... she seems happy

  • @wclark316 What cage??

  • @wclark316 Ey...language..... but caging animals doesn't always have a bad effect on them and it depends on how your caging them...and as long as their isn't any wrong intention when doing so. but yeah... mostly best to leave them in the wild.

  • My Elephant speaks English very well. He's always like " Hey Loell buddy, what's good? " and I'm like " Yo dawg it's all good! " Then we go play 4 square. 'cept his square is much bigger than mine.

  • Hold on this is bollocks. It's meant to be a study not a training exercise. Why is she getting rewarded for "correct responses"?

  • Exactly what I was thinking, of course she is going to give the "correct response" cos she will get the food. Any animal can learn to do one simple thing if they know they will get food for it. This is the worst test ever!

  • But if she could not detect the seismic waves she would not know the correct response.

  • @butida If there are no seismic waves, then she just does nothing. Here, she only learns to lift her foot when the seismic wave is there.

  • but the thing is they can't if they don't catch up with the signal, which is what is being tested here.

  • @RomeoRiot if she gets a treat every time she lifts her foot, she would lift her foot after every whistle is blown. Sometimes the guy blew the whistle and no waves were emitted. In those instances the elephant didn't lift her foot.

  • @XanBcoo ok I accept after watching the vid again it does make sense, maybe wasn't paying much attention the 1st time.

  • britney spears looks like an elefant

  • Stop insulting elephants

  • agreed. they have feelings too

  • yup

  • ya i like elephants.

  • I'd like to study that broad with the hat.

No, just kidding. That's pretty awesome!

  • god, people like you are dull. just because it's not strictly relevant to your everyday life doesn't mean it's not interesting or relevant from a wider perspective. Stop watching the videos!

  • The communication of wild elephants is probably much more elaborate than we yet realize. Their brains are 3.5 times bigger/heavier than the brain of a human!

It's slightly bigger than the brain of a humpback whale, even.

Scientists have also come to the realization recently that brain-size to body-weight ratio really doesn't matter. Absolute brain-size is what matters most.

  • well do you know that many things/methods humans use are inspired by the way animals do it? for example pilots are doing lots of manuvers that birds do.. Sonar.. hm who had that idea before human?? Some bats, whales....

  • myplace9,

Let me guess, you are a Mark Sanford voter and supporter....

  • I wonder if we can spend some money figuring out how people like you can say such dumb-ass things on Youtube

  • the more we understand, the more we enrich ourselves, not to mention the better we can set up conservation programs for these animals as well as getting a better understanding of evolution itself (which is pretty relevant to us).

  • wont this experiment will only confuse the elephant's or animal's senses?

  • It's been long known that elephants hear low frequency sounds we cannot, and since they are social it follows that they would communicate using that range. Perhaps lifting one foot helps them listen better through the other, like pressing an ear to the ground, and also through the change in position of joints. It might also be a way of telling other elephants "shh! listen!". I wonder if they use their back feet to help determine where sounds originate, and if as a group they can triangulate.

  • Certainly possible. Their brains are 3.5 times larger than ours.

  • The can probably tell the direction -- even though the wavelength is longer than sounds we hear their feet are so much further apart than our ears chances are they know the direction.

  • they arent talking theyre communicating with their feet. tard

  • no leas esto es una de esas cosas k tienes k pasar lo a tantas personas en tonto tiempo

porfavor no lea esto (me obligaron)

yo lo lei y lo hise & si es verdad..la familia de un amigo murio hace una semana

  • Doesn't rewarding the elephant for 'correct' behaviour train her to reinforce their hypothesis? Rewarding her randomly, or after every trial would seem better.

  • so agreed

  • I agree. Positive reinforcement for them behaving how you want is a TRAINING method. If you truly want to see how they behave naturally, conditioning them to do it the way you want is retarded.

  • I second that.

  • Too bad they can't fly like Dumbo can.

  • Krunk, C-walking!? Elephants are gangsta!

  • ok. i got yr letter. that was kinda weird...but that is true. I THINK. im not that smart! c'mon!

    shit shit shit! lolol

  • why do people keep on saying S'H"iT"? lol shit shit shit! lolo

  • no.........

  • um.. it's about elephant... NOT SHIT!!! anyway, nice video ^-^

  • lol i was talking about the people below my other message they are super funny

  • i know lol xD

  • people how did shit get into the conversation??

  • this is what i am wondering ....

  • Well, it only proves that the elephant can perceive the seismic waves. But that does not prove that elephants use seismic waves also to communicate.

  • it wasn't a very good experiment thats 4 sure.

  • i lurv elaphants their sogerogeous, so magestic and all that. I wanna elaphant :)

  • DUMBO DIDN'T TALK

  • interesting!

  • MrSunny29-shut up you annoying tree hugger...Yea i know i love animals to and they're cute and adorable but freaking chill you don't have to be screaming "THE ONLY THING HUMANS HAVE DONE IS POLLUTION AND DESTROCTION" okay yeah so it's true but no need to shout it and make everyone think your a big BIG tree hugger!!!

  • U r funny man! Hahahaha animals shit don't they? Ofcourse buddy. But u know research says tht the chemicals produced from factories etc pollutes water much more. Shit as u say is actually finally converted into earth and animals usually shit on Earth and not into water. While we do FLUSH OUR SHITS into water, but even then Shit is not as dangerous as chemicals. But anyway u made me laugh. So according 2 u noone should shit to prevent pollution .. just kidding .. take care

  • Also buddy when sea animals shit then that shit is used by other sea insects and species which convert that SHIT into useful manure. Also fishes as u know they clean the water by there own process. Sea animals especially fishes clean the water and other insects either eat that shit as a food and some convert it into useful manure and fertilizer. So shit is actually part of biological cycle and not as harmful as u may think about chemicals as chemicals cannot be converted into fertilizer. Peace

  • why? ok. wat r u talking about? ur confusing. lolol shit shit shit shtit!

  • just someone said tht killing see animals is useful so tht they don't shit and don't pollute the water

I was telling them tht the 'fecal matter' i.e 'SHIT' is not that harmful as they think

Because texture of 'shit' is very much like 'earth soil' and is is a necessary part of biological cycle for plants and certain insects

Nothing given by nature is useless, it might be useless to one species but it is used by other species.

Just like 'fruit' is useless to plant but is food for us

  • the guy's "animal shit, they pollute the world too" comment was a joke.. and fruit is part of the plant's reproductive cycle so saying that is useless to them is like saying sperm, or fetal eggs are useless to us

  • Yes I agree as fruit has seed and helps reproduction.

    Missed that one

  • very interesting!!

  • I posted here to see some elephant porn... haven't seen one giant elephant penis yet... I am distraught.

  • lol

  • there..there..

  • that is really fucking cool

  • White Person - "Time to go hunt me some elephant feet"

  • Racist

  • Racist

  • fascinating stuff..

  • Animals are good at reading expectation in humans. Famous example was counting horses, that stopped counting when they saw the human happy the right # was reached. It was not counting, it was tapping till humans are happy. Humans are polluting the experiment by being close to elephant.

  • You are right, humans have already done so much pollution and still they are not able to understand that there experimenting habits are in itself against natural way of life.Human beings are EXPERIMENT JUNKIES. Animals can detect vibrations for sure. Elephants climbed hills in India before Tsunami. Leave poor animals alone, do not confuse them with artificial vibrations. They may stop acting to natural one if they get confused.

  • lmao they can talk with their feet

  • Oh My! I work there! I always knew Donna was smart, and all elephants for that matter! How exciting!

  • This is very cool.

  • Thanks 4 sharing

  • Thats pretty cool, but I was at an IMAX w\ some Friends and we saw a documentary on different creatures and elephants came up, they were traveling a LONG distance to get to an area plentiful w\ water as their current was drying up but then a younger elephant got turnt around and was headed away back to the drylands, I guess he was too underdeveloped for this type of communication, dunno.

  • that's awesome, i'm sure lots of animals communicate

  • The Elephant is saying Shut the fuck up and give me some food!

  • We can always learn from animals. very interesting.

  • The difference between animal and men is just ignorance.

  • very cool

  • ooooooo i saw this a long time ago!

    but this is cool!

    thanks smirenger sent me this!

    thanks man!

  • Great Video. Awesome animals. (5*) Sherry

    Thanks smirenger for the share.

  • This was great, I think the elephant is an amazing creature. Thanks for posting this. i give this 5*****'s.

  • real good video.Great info.

  • Beautiful! The animals are amizing

  • Lindo vídeo, parabéns.

  • I think elephants are the most beautiful of animal life..and smart!

  • I wouldnt call them beautiful, but they are very awesome and intriguing animals! :)

  • aww. I was expecting a elephant that could talk for real :(

  • me too :(

  • Dumbo never spoke.

  • The reason why most people believe this myth is because abused circus elephants are the ones being filmed. I am sure if you where kept in captivity, speared with a bull hook, electricuted, and chained to a post, you would get pissed as well.

  • I am talking about so called mean elephants or "elephant rage"

  • do you mean elephants in musk?..most male animals in their "moment" or mating season are dangerous to be around

  • Excuse me, but the Oakland Zoo (not circus, mind you) is in fact the world's most renowned in elephant care? We don't use bull hooks and other such crude methods of trying to "get" the beautiful creatures that reside here to cooperate. We actually saved one of our tigers from a circus.

  • That's good. My post was in responce to people claiming that elephants are "mean" by nature and go on unpredictable rampages.

  • You are Right, Animals are never mean, they live in nature away from competition for money, pride, or any such disease of humans. They don even know that people adress them mean or not mean, and they do not indulge in such stupid judgements given by some stupid people. If humans stop captivating elephants, then they will not go mean. There mean behaviour is just reaction to the slavery and captivity by heartless humans.I am sorry for agressive post, BUT HUMAN BEHAVIOUR SOMETIMES MAKES ME PISSED.

  • Untrue. There are thousands of examples of animals acting in a 'mean' manner - particularly Rhinos and Elephants.

  • danicols49.Don go in there areas and they will not act mean.If Elephant enters ur home and puts chain on u and uses u in circus against ur will or for lifting logs of wood without even proper food and keeping u in captivity will u be nice to him?Do u think humans have right to put chains on animals against there free will?Earth is for everyone, not only for humans.Humans have done nothing GOOD to planet earth.Except destruction, pollution of water, air, soil, global warming.

    SO WHO IS MORE MEAN?

  • Mr Sunny29 - I wasnt speaking comparatively, I was just stating that they can be 'mean'. I agree that animals are persecuted and that this can be cruel and inhumane. My argument was based on footage I have seen of wild animals killing each other for no real intent other than destruction.

  • LIKE I SAID!!!FREAKING CHILL!!!

  • youre making some really good points , its inspiring to read from someone who can understand the reality and importance of such matters, cheers

  • Hey ! Thank you very much for your such nice gesture and point of appreciation. Really thank you very much

  • Ah, I see. My apologies!

  • Good Job by saving animals from circus

  • MMMM... interesting

  • That's cool!

  • W T F?

treat the elephant when he does it right???

  • k then....?

  • wow this is krimchee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! realy its very krimchee ..o ya i like pie deal with it

  • /watch?v=Y7crw8yFdIs

Dou You Think He İs Alive ?

Watch this video and make your comment

  • I'm sorry to say this, but Elephants are smarter than People, We kill each other, Do They?

  • Elephants are actually among the most dangerous animals. They have short fragile tempers, that can easily be broken, and will go into a mad killing spree if so. This is commonly called Elephant Rage.

  • Elephants are timid creatures who only go on wild rampages during "Musk". Musk is like they're time of the month. You can tell an elephant is going through musk by the dripping sweat on both sides of the cheeks. Most elephants need to be tied down during this period. It usually lasts for a few days to a week. Circus owners who try to use an elephant during this period will have a bad outcome.

  • LOL

  • There are a lot of videos on Youtube about Elephants going into an unpredicted rage and killing people. Scary. Most likely insensitive trainers and let's face it...they dont' have to take anything from anyone if they don't want to.

  • Sammy, the point I tried to make is that we as a race have the bad bad habit of killing our own kind, we no better but we do it anyway. Go to CanadaLarry and watch the Visitor, First Contact.

  • where do you get your information?

  • I get my information from books and articles mostly.

  • i dont think smart is the right word here.

If humans dont kill, then we wont be humans that have free will

  • I believe that is true.

  • you're joking right?

they teach her to act in a way that confirms their theory?

  • isnt that they talk in the sould below our threshold of hearing.

  • and every elephant starts running, making a stampy

  • What if there was an earthquake and an elephant mistakes the earthquake for his mommy calling? lol.

  • seismic shakers make the women happy.

  • i lift my foot up when someone bends over

  • bass in the place :D

  • EL3PH4NT5 AR3 T3H SH1T!

  • Interesting. To me it looks like they are giving her treats for no reason. they have no idea what the rumbles mean so how do they know when to reward her and what exactly she is *saying* I think she is smart enough that if she wants the treats she will follow these rules and paw lifts becuase she knows she gets something. SO maybe shes not really learning to communicate, just to scam treats. Kinda cute though but very interesting

  • i'd do that biologist =]

  • me too

  • Because the elephant knows that she will be rewarded when she hears a sound and lifts her foot, it's conditioning. She won't lift her foot until she hears a sound.

  • Great video.:)

  • I doubt they should be rewarding the Elephants with treats when they get a favourable response. It could really affect the validity of the study.

  • Don't elephants use that same technique

to try to find males for mating?

  • a ma han karin

  • po a

  • Giving the elephant a treat for a specific response only proves the handlers are training the elephant to respond in a particular manner. The "science" of this experiment is flawed.

  • no, they were testing if the elephants could

sense the ground vibrations. If they respond then they can sense it.

  • I'm doubtful to this idea and I wonder how hard that shaker is actually shaking. I mean I can feel the earth vibrate as well, but I sure can't make noise out of it. In my opinion nothing's been proved yet.

  • haha godsea2 owned

  • you didn't thought they really talked

  • misleading title! >:(

  • interesting

  • Cool!
