With all due respect to this legend, I don't see how you can hate tennis and win 8 grand slams. To be among the best players in history of ANY sport you have to be pulled by passion. Andre may have had a hate/love relationship with tennis. To me its pretty obvious that even though he hated the game (because of his childhood, relationship with his father, the media), well he must have been passioned by this game at least a bit. Only passion can make you among the best in history.
@Wkng881 NO WAY! You think he would lie on national television for attention?? i agree that passion drives talent, but so does pressure --- someone may hate, say, basketball, but be forced to play it constantly, and practice everyday, all day. You are saying they would not end up good at it? i think that he was pressured into playing tennis all of the time, and that led him to be, in my opinion, the best tennis player to ever live.
@thepjdrummer You can pressure as much as you want someone, greater chance is he will not end up be among the best. You need skills and passion. He says it himself.. he hated the fact that he never chose tennis for his life, someone else (his father). That shows that he didn't hate tennis, he hated the way he was taken into it. He said that after his depression, he chose not only to stop drugs but chose tennis for the first time by choice. It was his decision and he loved the game.
@Wkng881 Whatever happened he was one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and had one of the most successful recovery's of any celebrity i have ever seen.

i dont see any honesty at all in this man
Andre has been given a long time to explain how and why he did in the past,
The man sat down with a narrator and adjusted all the pieces of the puzzle to self answer all the damning questions that were to follow
Watching him when i was young admired his fighting spirit but as you get older nothing really is what it seems

Just finishing 'Open'. What an excellent book - compulsively readable and superbly well-written. Bravo Andre.

@TheLeilisa Not really , but it is still possible to succeed with that height ! I'd say 1.80 is the minimum in today's tennis !
