I share Dr. Kings dreams. The other day I saw her on Beck and she talked about loving your enemy and how it has been very hard to honor that, to be that recently. That really struck home and reminded me of what my duty is. How important it is to DO the right thing. Such an admirable woman. One human race without division. @HangProgressives Yes Sen. Byrd was a member of the KKK and a Democrat. He joined because the Democrats (at the time) WERE the racist party. He actually filibustered the Civil Right Amendment on the floor of the Senate. But one person is not proof.
What about the other Southerners? They were solidly Democratic for 100 years then became REPUBLICAN after the CRA was passed? Coincidence? Or the result of racists who felt betrayed by LBJ and decided to jump ship (see the 'Southern Strategy')?

90% of the people (not just the politicians) who fought FOR segregation became republicans after the CRA was passed. Did they change ideologies? Did they see the error of their ways concerning Civil Rights? Or did the PEOPLE from 'the party of slavery' just find a new (more racist-friendly) home?

Look at the vote cast by the house in 1964 as to who supported the Civil Rights Act. Liberals were Pro American Revolution when Conservatives were Loyalists to the Crown. Libs were the Abolitionist while Cons were for Slavery. Libs were the ones who fought for Immigrant Rights, Womens Right to Vote, Child Labor Laws and Unions, while Cons fought against every one.
It was also the liberals who were demanding to go to war with Germany while the conservatives (like Bush's grandfather) were selling them weapons.

But comparing either major party to what it was 50 years ago is meaningless. After the Civil Rights Act was signed (by a Democratic president if you're really into partisan squabbling), southern white segregationists abandoned the Democratic Party in droves to become Republicans.

LBJ also famously said "well, there goes the south" after signing the civil rights act - he knew southern conservatives would not support the Democrats after segregation was banned. His ideas were not at all similar the the sentiments of the contemporary right. King was never part of the anti-gay, anti-abortion, prayer-in-schools blindly-support-foreign military-intervention evangelical movement that started to take over the Republican Party in the 80s.

@sweetbread - I think it's better now than it used to be. As far as we've come, we've got an even farther way to go, though. In Europe, where teens are about as sexually active as we are, the rate of unwanted pregnancies is well under half of what it is here with liberal countries like Holland having the best records. Granted, Some things we Americans shouldn't import form Europe such as all their socialism but this is one area where they've got an edge.
