Roddick is a decent player, but most importantly he has the commitment and work ethic to keep him in the top 10/15.
A match like this shows his limits and how slow he is.
Nadal, Djokovic, and probably some others would run down many of those balls putting more pressure on Fed. Its easier to glide beautiful shots into the open court when you know 70/30 that the other guy is going to give up on it anyway
True but remember that Federer played Nadal in the same tournament and if anything, Nadal was beaten even more badly than Roddick so I don't think movement was an issue. In this tournament, Roger made Davydenko, Nadal and Ferrer all look pedestrian tbh and they are some of the best movers in the world. Simply put, this Roger Federer was playing at an almost inhuman level. No amount of speed could do anything about it.
Oh I agree. I re-read my post and it does look like i'm not giving proper credit. I think Federer played his best ever tournament here in 2007 (the 06 vintage was also quite something).
I was trying to focus more on Roddick in my post though. Federer exposes so many of Roddick's weaknesses.
at 3:50 and 4:02 how many players except Federer would come to the net when the oponent is about to chip and charde ??? It's really weird but in fact quite well played and anticipated.
this is the points where you love so much Federer. His shots are not always impressive, but he plays really accurate, although playing like nobody else, and trying things nobody tries^^
5:50 some wicket "drop" on that volley, rare seen from Arod but how great, just sad that was about his only succesfull volley in the match and point in the set!
DanimaILawlz I dont think so at all. If i had to mention another match besides this one, it would be the match VS Murray in Masters Cup in 08. Federer played amazing, and Murray was in one of his best performances ever. Another match was the AO Final vs Murray, or the Paris BNP Paribas Masters, vs Nalbandian, that was one of the classiest match ever.
Federer is the best player ever because he has the best PLACEMENT. he often places the ball in a spot where the opponent is not standing and with effortless power.....that's why he makes it look so easy because his opponents are always running around like headless chickens while he is barely breaking a sweat.
I am a roddick fan, but federer, in this match, was too much ahead of Roddick. Roddick didnt play a bad match, but this Federer was the last and best performance, since 2006.
I think it's a match-up issue. Roddick struggles against guys who can return the serve well, look at his record vs Federer or Agassi. And now look how well he handles other top guys, he's beaten Djokovic 4 times, Nadal and Murray 3 times each, he's got good stats vs Nalbandian, Ferrero, Safin, Davydenko, Hewitt (all positive).
Actually Roddick has a great forehand, volleys and of course serve but Federer neutralises his every weapon.
It's not true.Roddick didn't play terrible against Roger all these years. It was the fact that Roger made Roddick look ridiculous and weak all this time.
" Sometimes it's appropriate just to give thanks, we should be thankful to live in an era where we're able to witness the brillance of this man " I love that commentator, it's amazing the emotions federer can inspire us...
Great match once again from the king, what a volley exhibition...
Roger will be back : the king isn't dead, long live the king
almost every single time federer takes the court with roddick, hewitt or anyone else he has winning record agains´t, he must feel great about himself and his chances, given the phsychological edge he has on so many player´s, which is probably the reason why, the majority of times, he play´s great agains´t, guys like roddick..just goes to show how mental the game of tennis really is..
Roger in terms of a tennis professional can improve his volleys. However, the thing is he doesnt have to, since he is so comfortable with his groundstrokes and looks to have an easier time winning points that way. I think he just wants to go for an overall perfect game. He volleyed way more often this match.
@gabe228 There are better volleyers than him arguably. I would go with Tsonga or Murray. What I am saying that his volleys have a margin to get better than they already are.

@justinawesome97 federer makes him impatient, makes roddick try all these drastic measures to win a point, but yeh ur right fed does lure him in really nicely. but either way, when federers on fire like this, roddick cant even last about hitting 4-5 balls with him in rally.
@Sonic2710 In the last 6 1/2 years, very few player´s have been able to knock out federer out of slam´s, with the exception of rafa owning roger on the clay at roland garros, apart from that , djokovic and safin come to mind and they had to play out of their skin´s to beat him..I think it´s safe to say, that roger is another animal at grand slam´s and the world tour finals, I think those are the times, when his competitive fire really burns the strongest.
I have a copy of this match but couldn't resist watching this clip. Like Peter Fleming, I give thanks that I witnessed those 3 great matches from Fed in Shanghai 2007. Brilliant all-court tennis which takes a lot of energy. Fed at his very best.
...It is easier said than done. It is like why don't more people just hit flat groundstrokes, attack the net and play a lot of deep slices all day to Nadal. Players need that 5 feet behind the baseline to bide them time because Roger hits the ball earlier which takes time away. And this is ON TOP of the fact that Roger usually has control of the point allowing him to be offensive. Seriously, it is a really dumb observation. Obviously they want to be closer, but they can't do it.
seem´s like karma for andy, nearly every time, fed and a-rod square off on the court, roger is playing his best tennis, shotmaking all day..there must be someone out there pinning a roddick voodoo doll every time they play.
yeh iv noticed its like federer just hits out on EVERYTHING and like roddick doesnt ever get to them in time. its like dang at least try andy .ah but i like andy an all but dang there was a couple points he could've saved if he'd tried harder.
no, his shoulder injury was in 2008, he had an inflamation, which didn´t require surgery, it was more of a minor lesion, in 2007 his knees were banged up in the indoor season..
well he does say that he needs to play his very best to beat Andy, if thats what he's doing then i guess it might as well be a sign of respect. Can't help feeling though luck seems to enjoy being on Federer's side over Roddick's.
one thing that i have noticed about Federer's game that has changed over the past years is that he does not attack the open court that much, now he goes for the body.
The only things the commentator says are "yes" and "perfection" or "alright, thats a start" even though its almost done with the match..... i want that job XD
"Well, sometimes it's appropriate just to give thanks; and we should be thankful that we live in an era where we are able to witness the brilliance of this man".
I think the commentator hit the nail square in the head with this.
i think, now he is not as mentally strong and confident....back then doesnt matter who his opponent is, he would crush them and win with ease...now days when he meet ssomeone like nadal or even del potro, fed loses cause his as not mentaly strong...
So by your logic Nadal is, in fact, also mentally 'not as strong' since he has lost to players such as soderling, del potro and cilic lately? This whole mental issue is way overrated in my opinion... If you're having a bad day and nothing seems to work then there's only so much you can do about it... Otherwise Nadal would win every match he plays since he is generally known to be extremely strong mentally, no?
Having a good or bad day, or even how well u excute ur plan is defintently apart of it...but im saying like fed is still as good as ever, but it seems like fed choked alot at times and not palying well at specific oppenents such nadal, and now i think del potro in future.......look at us open , fed was goin great and then dropped his lvl near the last sets, mayb mental issues?.....and comin back to mental strength, its something that del potro used very well, coming back and knew he could win it
im tired of people saying that federer isnt the old federer anymore. he dominated 04-07, but what do you expect, that he keeps on winning everything like he did back then? he is the current #1 and record holder. federer is dominating still on the slams and thats the most important thing.
you can see he played in first gear in the first set and went up another gear in the second.regrettably we dont see roger play on this level anymore,05-07 he is completely unbeatable
i still cant believe he let the u.s open final slip out of his hands
he had the chance to hold every slam if he made the australian open final
yes it was, he changed his game play completely during the Wimbledon final though...two MAJOR changes were his backhand's placement and he stopped using the slice/chip and charge that he used to do which almost ALWAYS made him lose the point. Too bad hes still a VERY poor returner.
well, we've seen plenty of tennis players trying to lob over an opponent at the net. even if the opponent's not federer, most lobs either go over the baseline due to pressure at the net or get smashed. even tennis players like hewitt or santoro who's known for their lobs can get a constant advantage over federer with a lob. but then again, i have no idea how else he would beat federer... roddick's game is exactly the kind federer likes to play against
yeah, pretty much, if Roddick could place a lob over Federer then he should have the smarts to place other shots that lead to different kind of rallies thereby making him a different opponent against Federer
@LSU3alltheway how can you be so sure, that he believed he was not going to win.. he must have some degree of belief.. apart from that, I support everything else in your comment.
@LSU3alltheway andy roddick is a great competitor, people who say his serve is what makes him sucessfull are skimming the surface, obviously his big serve helps, but it´s the fighting spirit and competitive intensity, that make andy roddick, who he is, in tennis.
Those years he used to play horrible against Federer. And I say "horrible" not only because he didn´t know how to play , but also he was coming down very soon
I was happy for federer when he broke Sampras's record at Wimbledon. But I can't help but feel for Andy Roddick. He's worked so hard to win another grand slam and it seems like everytime he gets close, Federer is in the way. Roddick is a player that is definitely capable of winning more than 1 major. But he's gotta get thru the Fed at some point, to do it.
I love Federer and I am a huge fan, but there's something very annoying about the commentator gushing over Federer. Like when he says, "sometimes we should just give thanks and we should be thankful for that we live in an era...to witness the brillance of this man." haha It's true, but still, does the guy have to say it. It's disrespectful to Roddick.
Federer, knowing that Roddick has a limited ability to hit passing shots on both sides, takes advantage of the net more often not only overall, but is more willing to come in on weak approach shots. I'm not sure what Roddick could've done to compensate for that though. How do you beat a confident Federer? - Question of the Modern Era.
And Federer made Nadal look so good all these years because Rafa loves to play against his style of game, while Federer loves to play against Roddick. It is about match-ups in these situations, not about the real quality in their encounters, Roddick is such an underrated player in tennis. He would have won 6 or 7 Grand Slam titles if Roger hadn't been there, he is great.
But, you know, Federer is the best player ever and his game is above the all. Earlier you see, easier's the tee.
He said he come more often to the net and serve-volley more often.
Not pretty surprising from the net master, but it's so ridiculously simple it could actually work. And like Sampras says: "(...)especially when you think he's about one or two games from winning the macth.".
Nadal isn't peculiarly a great passer and all is game is about giving hard shots to return. Let's if he's right.
nadal, novalk, murray play too much defensive game. a point for them lasts like 5 minutes. i like roger's clean net playing, aggressive playing in 2007. But now it is 2009, so our federer could not go back to the same in 2009, however, maybe federer would have a chance to discover ways to win. Let's wait for this genius to bring his game back.
I know from playing myself that federer's type of groundstrokes are deceptively harder to return than someone like Roddick's ground strokes. Federer hits harder groundstrokes even though there is more topspin.
its the raquet he uses and the strings that go along with it, which causes the ball to jump off of his strings with a considerable amount of topspin...
haha look at all this hate on roddick, if fed is so good why does he loose to murray, roddick beats djokovic who beats fed, roddick wins straight games off a serve he cant suck.. and what the fuck is the deal wiht people and highlight videos if your gonna put highlights put an equal amount of points scored from both players, that first set was wicked close clearly there was andy footage that should have been added not just a couple points.
Well Fed, this is called return of serve. Not what you show us today.

Plasuun 2 years ago
Having a good or bad day, or even how well u excute ur plan is defintently apart of it...but im saying like fed is still as good as ever, but it seems like fed choked alot at times and not palying well at specific oppenents such nadal, and now i think del potro in future.......look at us open , fed was goin great and then dropped his lvl near the last sets, mayb mental issues?.....and comin back to mental strength, its something that del potro used very well, coming back and knew he could win it
cbee69 2 years ago
im tired of people saying that federer isnt the old federer anymore. he dominated 04-07, but what do you expect, that he keeps on winning everything like he did back then? he is the current #1 and record holder. federer is dominating still on the slams and thats the most important thing.
rolf85 2 years ago 2
you can see he played in first gear in the first set and went up another gear in the second.regrettably we dont see roger play on this level anymore,05-07 he is completely unbeatable
i still cant believe he let the u.s open final slip out of his hands
he had the chance to hold every slam if he made the australian open final

roddicks game is to predictable
utkarsh12 2 years ago
yes it was, he changed his game play completely during the Wimbledon final though...two MAJOR changes were his backhand's placement and he stopped using the slice/chip and charge that he used to do which almost ALWAYS made him lose the point. Too bad hes still a VERY poor returner.

he's making roddick dance!

Roddick should really learn to lob it over Fed 'cause the passes barely seem to work for him.
Fernandez218 2 years ago 3
neh, i think its better off as it is, federer's a quick mover and roddick is not exactly known for his touch, i doubt a lob would work better
foul01 2 years ago 3
you have a bit more of an argument with Roddick's placement power than Federer's quickness to return a lob.
Fernandez218 2 years ago
well, we've seen plenty of tennis players trying to lob over an opponent at the net. even if the opponent's not federer, most lobs either go over the baseline due to pressure at the net or get smashed. even tennis players like hewitt or santoro who's known for their lobs can get a constant advantage over federer with a lob. but then again, i have no idea how else he would beat federer... roddick's game is exactly the kind federer likes to play against
foul01 2 years ago
yeah, pretty much, if Roddick could place a lob over Federer then he should have the smarts to place other shots that lead to different kind of rallies thereby making him a different opponent against Federer
Fernandez218 2 years ago
I'm impressed that Roddick never gave up, the guy knew he was not going to win. But he still gave it his all. Great guy for the sport
LSU3alltheway 2 years ago 27
@LSU3alltheway how can you be so sure, that he believed he was not going to win.. he must have some degree of belief.. apart from that, I support everything else in your comment.
reefric 1 year ago
@LSU3alltheway andy roddick is a great competitor, people who say his serve is what makes him sucessfull are skimming the surface, obviously his big serve helps, but it´s the fighting spirit and competitive intensity, that make andy roddick, who he is, in tennis.
reefric 1 year ago
@LSU3alltheway what you ´re talking about?
He lost 6-4, 6-2¡.
Those years he used to play horrible against Federer. And I say "horrible" not only because he didn´t know how to play , but also he was coming down very soon
lanceloter 1 year ago
@LSU3alltheway You always have a chance to win. No matter what. Never give up.

LTown8365 2 years ago 3
I love Federer and I am a huge fan, but there's something very annoying about the commentator gushing over Federer. Like when he says, "sometimes we should just give thanks and we should be thankful for that we live in an era...to witness the brillance of this man." haha It's true, but still, does the guy have to say it. It's disrespectful to Roddick.
kinglear 2 years ago
it's not disrespect. your an idiot

5:08 - the high backhand volley that federer played is the volley roddick had to play in the wimbledon final and he would have been 2:0 up
mitroveca 2 years ago
mitroveca, not exaclty. In the 2009 wimbledon final, federer hits the ball much stronger than roddick's here.

well maybe but basicly its the same shot

roddick is federer's bitch, he can do whatever he wants
salamatzamo 2 years ago
Federer, knowing that Roddick has a limited ability to hit passing shots on both sides, takes advantage of the net more often not only overall, but is more willing to come in on weak approach shots. I'm not sure what Roddick could've done to compensate for that though. How do you beat a confident Federer? - Question of the Modern Era.
JL6293 2 years ago
1. Roddick is a great passer. While not at Nadal, Federer level, he is definitely a great passer from both wings.
2. You dont beat a confident Federer unless your names Nadal

Roddick makes Federer look so good.
PabasamDee 2 years ago
And Federer made Nadal look so good all these years because Rafa loves to play against his style of game, while Federer loves to play against Roddick. It is about match-ups in these situations, not about the real quality in their encounters, Roddick is such an underrated player in tennis. He would have won 6 or 7 Grand Slam titles if Roger hadn't been there, he is great.
But, you know, Federer is the best player ever and his game is above the all. Earlier you see, easier's the tee.
Ojstra 2 years ago
Sampras have an answer to Nadal enigma.
What spin worth taken on the fly? Nothing.

I have no answer for Roger's genius xD
go Federer ;)

nadal, novalk, murray play too much defensive game. a point for them lasts like 5 minutes. i like roger's clean net playing, aggressive playing in 2007. But now it is 2009, so our federer could not go back to the same in 2009, however, maybe federer would have a chance to discover ways to win. Let's wait for this genius to bring his game back.

Haha the commentator is so lax upon roddick's winning points.
IricForset 2 years ago
I know from playing myself that federer's type of groundstrokes are deceptively harder to return than someone like Roddick's ground strokes. Federer hits harder groundstrokes even though there is more topspin.
Bobby61189 2 years ago
its the raquet he uses and the strings that go along with it, which causes the ball to jump off of his strings with a considerable amount of topspin...
rockerduff1231 2 years ago
Federer's racquet head speed plus small sized racquet head is comparable to Nadal's racquet head speed and his larger head.

haha look at all this hate on roddick, if fed is so good why does he loose to murray, roddick beats djokovic who beats fed, roddick wins straight games off a serve he cant suck.. and what the fuck is the deal wiht people and highlight videos if your gonna put highlights put an equal amount of points scored from both players, that first set was wicked close clearly there was andy footage that should have been added not just a couple points.
