@Anotora Iron Chef (as in, the original Japanese) always had "non-professional" tasters in the panel, maybe one culinary critic. That's because part of the show is the experience of the guests sharing the meal, it's not all about competition.
Someone from the audience, likely a fan of the Iron Chef TV program, would fit perfectly with the way the Japanese ran it. If he likes good eating (not taking a dig at his girth, people in glasshouses...), he'd be a perfect fit for the tasting.
@darrencrissismylove Bobby is an jerk. Most of his shows on The Food Network have been relegated to late late night time slots just before the infomercials start because he is arrogant and self important which make his shows almost unwatchable. Even the premise of his show "throw down with Bobby Flay" is self serving. Plus he loses most of the time. He may have skills in the kitchen but he comes off as a sucky human being.
you know he brushed off cutting board so how could he not know he was standing on it - comeon Bobby own up to your mistake.....................even since its years ago..........
u got electrocuted in the brian dude. can u imagine. judges eating the food from that cutting board. your tool. to a chef. they understand its an insult on your tool. to the crowd. its a retard providing entertainment.
He was speaking in English, they just dubbed it over anyway. He lives in America, he speaks English and he was speaking it there. Listen carefully and you can hear his voice underneath the dub. Morimoto was right, maybe he got a little too upset, but he was right. Standing on your cutting board and screaming "Raise the roof, yo!" isn't sportsmanlike or chef-like. Besides, he and Flay have since become okay with each other. Both appear on Iron Chef America.
Good for Morimoto for calling Bobby Flay out. This act shows the truth about Flay; he's a TV personality before anything else, and a poor one at that. Many families/mothers don't let you set your shoes in the kitchen table when it's empty, and here the head chef is going to hop up and down on the area where he prepares his food? No tact or class, and there's no ifs ands or buts about it. Between him and poker's Phil Hellmuth, America is accurately represented, unfortunately.
Celebrating is ok and fine and all, but there is a limit. For example...celebrating to the point of taking your pants off is offensive and crosses a line. What Bobby did by standing on his cutting board and hooting and hollering is about the same in the cooking world. Kinda like how double dipping while you're cooking is like spitting in the food. Bobby, your behavior is starting to make me consider more that humans come from apes.
Glad I saw the original Japanese audio of the New York Battle (Nyuu-Yooku Taiketsu) because I heard Morimoto speak English when he got pissed over Bobby standing on the cutting board. Morimoto is correct, Bobby did disrespect the board and cooking, especially his restaurant. Honestly I don't know why they dubbed Morimoto speaking, even despite the fact the dub said the same thing Morimoto said. Odd in my opinion.
That lecture by Iron Chef Morimoto is good. Bobby Flay is so uncivilised. Standing on a chopping board like a madman !!! Iron Chef Morimoto is a man of culinary discipline and good respect for the things he use.
I love how every single person is only commenting all of this just because you think that celebrating is wrong. In case you didn't pay attention to the area he was cooking on he had no other place to stand. There is nothing wrong with celebrating especially since Morimoto realized later that Bobby Flay wasn't being disrespectful on purpose, he was just celebrating that he completed the battle. Every person that comments bad about him just because of that really needs to get a life..
If Flay didn't pull his little cutting board stunt I think it would of been more or less a decent battle (I mean considering it's Flay we are talking about), that just ruined it and I am glad he lost after he did that.
I wonder y that woman reporter did points out bobby about standing on chopping board. Even I can figure that out straight way what's right or wrong. I dont wanna eat any of his dishes once I seen that.
I am replying to a comment made one year ago, but you're defending Bobby by saying he is young? The man is 36 years old in this video. How is that young? Loooooool.Σ( ̄。 ̄ノ)ノ
First of all, let me say that I think Bobby Flay is a great chef. Second of all some of you have a race issue going on. Why? Because you make it seem as if cutting boards are a divine object in Japan. The cutting board is sacred to all chefs Japanese or not. Its like the ball in sports., the car in NASCAR, or the tools of a carpenter. I know not really racist but you guys are making it race specific. And no Morimoto was not worried, you can see he was angry. And he is always humble not arrogant.
japanese or american, any professional cook who's worth anything knows to respect their food and equipment. that's only part of why bobby flay is trash. the other part is because his food is just crap. anyone who's in the industry understands what i mean. if your opinion is of otherwise, you dont know what you're talking about.
@iamthespaceship If you know anything at all, than you can realize that Bobby Flay is more of a cook than most chefs in America. He is an Iron Chef, he wins most of the time, and you can't comment on his cooking if you can't touch it.
@iamthespaceship Look, I admit Bobby Flay is arrogant, but that does not make his food crap.... You can not automatically equate disrespect to terrible work.... By the way, since my opinion is otherwise, I guess I don't know what I'm talking about, nor does Anthony Bourdain.
@iamthespaceship bobby flay is a looser hes not a chef , he still's the recipes from anther, and called it of his own , this guy not a chef looser and A hole have no respect to any one he think his sh i t dont stink
Flay may be a genius cook but not a dignified chef. Standing on the cutting board was very dumb of him. I mean I'll eat food I cut on my cutting board... will you put your feet on it? I think not. Same thing for feet on the table.
i see a lot of mixed feelings here... first of all, i can understand what morimoto meant by saying that cutting boards and knives are a sacred thing to a chef, and in some cases its true in a spiritual sense, because cutting boards are where the ideas flow and develop and as knives to be the artistic pen.
flay is a genus nonetheless, its just a culture clash and he probably didnt understand at the time. i doubt that he really meant to offend anybody

they're both extremely talented chefs from two completely different styles, but, one has to be the winner. btw, I love how Morimoto gets pissed when he gets on his cutting board. The difference between America and Japan, haha.
whatever reason or producers intention, bobby's attitude is so insulting and offensive. However, probably this is the american way. there is no problem unless bobby opens his restaurant outside usa.
bobby flay is no chef he just want's to be on T.V. which pisses me off, like bands only playing for money and fame not because they like the music they are playing, like fallout boys and Jonas brothers
bobby flay and morimoto are friends now. morimoto respects bobby flay. i like them both. morimoto made that fish ice cream, lolz! and a lot of stuff he makes on iron chef america looks delicious. he and bobby have very different styles but they have gotten over the unfortunate past they had and are now friends.
I don't think you have to be a Japanese Chef to respect the cutting board. It's simple common sense that you don't step on the equipment that you prepare food on.
This kind of "caught up in the moment" mistake does reveal a lot about one's character.
Look bobby didn't know that the cutting board was "sacred" in japan. he's an AMERICAN chef how was he to know that?! I can't believe this is the reason why people hate him so much. He was just excited that he actually got his food done because at one point his sous chefs suggested they should walk because they never thought they'd finish. He got caught up in the moment and was just trying to get the audience hyped up. Everyone makes mistakes and people need to get over it.
If I was Flay and was told to do that - and had an ounce of respect for my tools and the fact that I was in the presence of other respected colleagues - I would have very politely told Food Network to stuff it and left it at that. There's a line to be drawn, especially when there are reputations to consider. That was a bad judgment call to make, whether it was staged or not.
I don't know, Morimoto looked genuinely pissed and digusted which he should have because I thought that was gross. Nasty boots on a cutting board, not cool.
idk about that. bobby flay is consistently arrogant, so i think the standing on the board thing fits with his personality type. morimoto is so much more skilled.
I hope people realize that that standing on a board thing was...staged. Yes. Very Staged. Fake even. He was told to do that to show what a horrible person he was.
to be fair, the producers of iron chef asked him to be extra arrogant for this show. They wanted to make him the bad guy, and he was polite enough to agree.
Moh, I feel really embarassed because of Bobby Flay in this episode. He seems so cocky and arrogant. I can understand Morimoto calling him not a chef. He was angry. Since knives and cutting boards are sacred in Japan, I'm sure he felt annoyance when Bobby stood on the cutting board. To me, Bobby felt really unprofessional here. I'm just glad that he's mellowed out over the years. Still, it was something really childish. At least they're good friends now.
i agree but then again im sure bobby didn't know cutting boards and knives were sacred in japan...first of all they weren't in japan...but i agree with u
it's not about culture. it's not about just japan.
think about it.
u can step in cool grass. u can step in dry sand. u can step in wet mud. u can step in dog poo. or u can just walk across a floor and get all of the above from someone else.
so can u step on a table? can you step on your cooking board? would you eat a piece of meat that's been slapped onto that board, a bunch of vegetables that's been pressed on it?
it was never about culture. it's a basic form of hygiene and respect. fail.
You didn't do anything. There appears to be a Flay-loving vote spammer at work. I posted an anti-Flay comment on part 5 and it got to -6 in less than a day.
Whatever it is, they should be ashamed of themselves for supporting a no-talent hack like Bobby Flay. He should be a manager at Rubio's.

just flay lovers.
that's what's wrong with chefs these days. they have idolistic angles, and people blindly worship them
to really respect a person, u respect the way he gets over his mistakes too. i respect how flay has stood up from his past mistake and issued an apology, instead of hiding and twisting words/explanations.
blindly thumbsing down everyone, that's disrespect. all the braveness flay put forward to face his mistakes has been disregarded by fuzzy wuzzy pampering.
Ask any of the REAL chefs out there like Keller, Bourdain, Mina, Ramsay, Rupert, etc and they would all agree that was just immature and disrespectful. If he had kept his composure instead of standing up there like an idiot a lot of people probably wouldn't hate him so much. But then again, even now he still acts like a douche so I guess it can't be helped.
On another Iron Chef episode, Bobby cut his finger with a knife. What's even funnier was the foodnetwork portrayed him like a war hero hurt on a mission. Bobby Flay is a joke. So is the foodnetwork.
I mean was he worried and so he had to say something to discredit flay or what! Oh well I still love both and hope that they have come to an understanding and are friends now! I think they did a great job and are both incredible chefs!
first off the food network put bobby up to that! Second To call someone not a chef because he did that and maybe he doesn't have the same sacred respect for such things as in Japanese culture is a little sad....I Love Flay and Morimoto and love ic america I think that America is great becuase you can practice what you think is sacred and not be considered disrepsectful. It made me sad to see such anger ...especially when morimoto was clearly the favorite in all the commentary and fan base :(
Although I agree that Morimoto shouldn't have said "He is not a chef" it's about 10 X worse to see a chef standing on a cutting board yelling with his arms in the air. Im not a biggest fan of either these chefs but i respect their skills on cooking.
It's common sense. You do NOT step on a cutting board that you use to feed others and yourself. If Food Network intended for Flay to do that, then that's just low of the network and low on Flay to agree on it.
I agree with you on that. Flay has the manners of a 13 year old child. I bet he feels like an idiot.
I'm seeing a lot of negative marks on comments that suggest Flay's manners were inappropriate. The people giving those marks are probably Flay fanatics that do not look at the significance of mannerisms. Just because he's a great chef doesn't mean he has proper etiquette.

flay was so cocky back then. i remember when they did a rematch he threw the cutting board down, and then stood on the counter so he wouldn't offend morimoto again...
Like enter5000 suggested above, imagine someone treated the Stars and Stripes flag disrespectfully because he thinks it's just a piece of cloth. Conservative Americans would take great offense from it, whereas others might not take it as serious an action. Do the same to the Rising Sun flag of Japan and more or less the same will ensue. Reactions vary depending on individuals, but all in all, it's not a nice thing to do, anywhere, anytime. It's not limited to a particular culture.
Same with cutting boards. By nature all the human beings have to eat, and food is respected in any cultures in different manners (and to varying degrees). Unless standing on the cutting board is an unique American way of respecting food (and the people to whom you are serving food), you can't excuse it as an issue of cultural misunderstanding. It's more universal.

the comments and the ratings on the comments here are really sad.
flay IS a dickwad. why is it so hard to accept it?
on top, he is in a way representing america, and that should make it even more unacceptable, rather than sticking with him, just because he is american.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What a baby. He needs to grow up. That was extremely rude and makes a horrible example for other people of what Americans are like. I am, as an American offended by his actions. Scared or not you do not jump on top of tables, anywhere not even in a decent bar. You do nto stand on someone else's counter.
flay is a genius ok so he acted immature but isnt that what makes him different? ok so it was disrespectfull but he already explained he was not aware of the fact that it was sacred in japan, cut bobby some slack he's a great chef
I found it distrubing to see a chef act like Flay. Regardless, what race or culture. The basic value in human race is "respect". Yes, a win is just a win. I love the iron chef series.I got hooked on it. I will continue to watch regardless who wins. Its the love of food that facinate me. Thanks a lot for loading it on youtube. Much appreciated.

Bobby Flay knew that he was representing America but his behavior must of ashamed all Americans with his child-like approach. Morimoto was right, HE ISN'T A CHEF HE'S A BIG KID!
i think i noe y i dnt lyk bobby so much now. i totally agree with morimoto u shuldnt stand on a chopping board. the whole knives nd chopping boards are sacred thing is totally true.
both sides dishes do look pretty though.
they need people who are both american as well as japanese you cant just hav one side only. it makes it unfair as people's tastebuds are all different
I met Bobby Flay today in New Jersey at the monmothe mall he opened another place, Bobbys Burger Palace. I was shaking thw whole time lol...hes my idol no joke<3
I don't condone Flay's actions (Quite the contrary, I think he's a douche-nozzle) but if I were him, I'd be as disrespectful as possible to the culinary arts SIMPLY to anger Morimoto. Seeing him all pissed off like that was FUCKIN' FUNNY!!! XD XD XD "He's not a chef!" Yes Masaharu, he's NOT a chef, but not because he stood on his cutting board, rather it's because all his food is crapty fusion cuisine. XD XD XD "Raise tha' ROOF, yo!" What a shitload of fuck. XD XD XD
I love how most Iron Chef fans hate Flay so much that make up excuses (even there's no proof) as to why he wins over Morimoto and Sakai. IE. "They let him win" or "It was rigged". Lol. A win is a win. Guess Flay is so "untalented" that he was able to beat Morimoto and "King of Iron Chefs" Sakai. All Flay does is win on Iron Chef and Iron Chef America. As a Raiders owner Al Davis says ""Just win, baby!".
Why the hell did they bring out some random guido from the crowd to try and differentiate between a 4 1/2 and a 5 star chef?

I don't think you have to be a Japanese Chef to respect the cutting board. It's simple common sense that you don't step on the equipment that you prepare food on.
This kind of "caught up in the moment" mistake does reveal a lot about one's character.
overider 2 years ago
I'm a Japanese and I thought same thing.
I agree with you.
But I love both chefs.
purple55shin 2 years ago 6
Look bobby didn't know that the cutting board was "sacred" in japan. he's an AMERICAN chef how was he to know that?! I can't believe this is the reason why people hate him so much. He was just excited that he actually got his food done because at one point his sous chefs suggested they should walk because they never thought they'd finish. He got caught up in the moment and was just trying to get the audience hyped up. Everyone makes mistakes and people need to get over it.
XoAllTimeLow15 2 years ago 9
If I was Flay and was told to do that - and had an ounce of respect for my tools and the fact that I was in the presence of other respected colleagues - I would have very politely told Food Network to stuff it and left it at that. There's a line to be drawn, especially when there are reputations to consider. That was a bad judgment call to make, whether it was staged or not.

and oh yea, i agree totally with Morimoto, bobby is not a CHEF!! a CHEF wouldn't do what he did. he's just an immature JERK!

Bobby Flay is such a LAME chef, even worse than Gordon Ramsey....
He show no respect to the kitchen at all, FULL of arrogant..
Even though, that cutting board is not HIS OWN, but he should NEVER EVER STEP ON IT...
For a chef stepping on cutting board is like stepping on our own "Money Bowl"..
such a shame and insult to all the chef..

At least they're good friends now.

it's not about culture. it's not about just japan.
think about it.
u can step in cool grass. u can step in dry sand. u can step in wet mud. u can step in dog poo. or u can just walk across a floor and get all of the above from someone else.
so can u step on a table? can you step on your cooking board? would you eat a piece of meat that's been slapped onto that board, a bunch of vegetables that's been pressed on it?
it was never about culture. it's a basic form of hygiene and respect. fail.

just flay lovers.
that's what's wrong with chefs these days. they have idolistic angles, and people blindly worship them
to really respect a person, u respect the way he gets over his mistakes too. i respect how flay has stood up from his past mistake and issued an apology, instead of hiding and twisting words/explanations.
blindly thumbsing down everyone, that's disrespect. all the braveness flay put forward to face his mistakes has been disregarded by fuzzy wuzzy pampering.

Ask any of the REAL chefs out there like Keller, Bourdain, Mina, Ramsay, Rupert, etc and they would all agree that was just immature and disrespectful. If he had kept his composure instead of standing up there like an idiot a lot of people probably wouldn't hate him so much. But then again, even now he still acts like a douche so I guess it can't be helped.

first off the food network put bobby up to that!

I'm seeing a lot of negative marks on comments that suggest Flay's manners were inappropriate. The people giving those marks are probably Flay fanatics that do not look at the significance of mannerisms. Just because he's a great chef doesn't mean he has proper etiquette.

It's not limited to a particular culture.
longslowdistance 3 years ago

Same with cutting boards. By nature all the human beings have to eat, and food is respected in any cultures in different manners (and to varying degrees). Unless standing on the cutting board is an unique American way of respecting food (and the people to whom you are serving food), you can't excuse it as an issue of cultural misunderstanding. It's more universal.
