Well the woman had courage and conviction.....the way she truly speaks the opening is marvelous, not that dull monotone that most people do. When she does things in character like this, it is always so real and immediate. Vocal troubles up high? Yeah well......what the hell when she SAYS something
I little to bit too melodramatic for my taste and sound more like Mimi singing Desdemona, rather than Renata. Nevertheless, it's a lovely sound and explains why Ms. Scotto had a marvelous career.
Lets not forget that Scotto was a consimate actress... this is Otello!!! Desdemona has a good idea that her fate is in the balance. Scotto colours the music and vocal line well. Her plea to the virgin Mary in a time of great misfortune and fear extols this. However, i do agree in many ways... Tebaldi and Caballe realy do nail this aria. They make it their own. To me this is the greatest composition of Ave Maria set to music... subjective opinion of course :]. My warm and kind regards,
Was just thinking can uyou imagine if a singer like La Tebaldi was on the opera circuit today.. gosh she woudl mop them up. I think they juts dont' leave the voice to mature in a natrual way anymore... kills so many super talents. As an aside La Tebaldi is my fav Italian soprano... a voice of this size... such control. Kind regards,
If a singer like Tebaldi was in existence today, I would do everything humanly possible be at every performance that person sang. Voices aren't left to mature anymore, nor are they mentored or guided in the right direction. Tebaldi was the greatest Italian soprano of her kind in my opinion. A huge, glorious, beautifully shaped sound with warmth and exquisite attention to legato phrasing - the list goes on. Just a miracle of nature.
It's not meldoramatic at all to me. It's got just the right amount of emotional urgency and forboding. Or would you prefer one of the current generic, cognitively challenged, excuses we have for "sopranos" we have presently? There's no room for criticism here.
"the current generic, cognitively challenged, excuses we have for "sopranos" we have presently" ... wow. That's harsh. Much as I love Scotto (she was my first soprano!), can you honestly find fault with our contemporary sopranos? Netrebko, Garanca, di Donato, te Kanewa, Fleming, etc.? Are you seriously calling their talent into question? I sense just a wee bit of snobbishness in your comment!
@Andante735 I do find it a touch melodramatic. Verdi himself was of the opinion that a truly effective Desdemona need only to sing the part beautifully.
Well, I just bawled my eyes out. I love Renata Scotto. She's one of the main reasons I started loving opera in the 70's. And this role, Desdemona, was the first I saw her perform, on PBS "Live from the Met".
She doesn't just sing it, she lives every moment and every word. She makes me weep for Desdemona. .. What an artist.

Certified Intergalactic! The moment Scotto sang at 1:09, I thought to myself, "Wow, Ave Maria!"

I absolutely agree with everything you've written. I'll go a step further and say that Tebaldi was vocally and musically the ideal Desdemona.

yes... i agree. Her recording with del monaco is heart breaking. Kind regards my friend in music.

@Andante735 Let us not forget, however, her strident and often treacherous top.
