Very cool riffs and lessons and I have been modifying them for my bass playing but if anybody has any inkling as of where I could find some bass lessons that are made in a similar manner and pick apart "genres".
And you should plug your distortion/fuzz through a digital reverb. Put 'verb button all the way and enjoy those ethereal clouds of undefinable sound that'll just flow out of your amp.
years ago I took lessons and my guitar teacher was a gemini too....so many great gemini guitarists out there you....Dave Navarro,Head and Munky too :)
love just hearing you play but great lessons, you explain very well, ive learned so much just from watching a few of your videos and ive been playing for years, thanks for the lessons :)
These videos have done more to unleash the musical parrt of my playing than anything else. Everyone else teaches technique and scales - you teach music!
tune those strings down another step and crank up the tempo and you've got some classic Matt Pike riffing. I love these lessons. Very useful (and good for inspiring some licks).
@gsogoz Hey cool video. I was wondering as I know very little about stoner rock could i use other scales such as harmonic minor or would that make it no longer a stoner rock riff?
@gsogoz I've been experiencing the same issue. The solution is to refresh the page. The browsers that I use are Firefox and Opera. It seems more noticeable in Opera. I went and checked the original copy of my video, and can assure you that there is no syncing issue with it, so it's a flash/browser issue. I would be interested to hear whether anybody else is experiencing the same problem. In any case, try the solution that I use and see what happens. It works for me.
@umnomedeutilizador There's elements of the "style" in their sound. At the end of the day, it's just a label, not a club with rules, dress codes, philosophical boundaries and other restrictions. The SOUNDS and tones these bands capture is where it's at for me. QOTSA transcend categorization, which is why they're such a great band.
@gsogoz i hope you don't get me wrong, they are my favourite band, but, when compared to kyuss, acrimony, bongzilla, fu manchu, electric wizard, orange goblin, etc, you notice a lot of differences, that's why i conquer with homme, when he says that qotsa are desert rock, almost only in a way to have a different label.
Well created video. Simple yet it insights options and ideas. I've been playing stoner/doom rock improv for seven years and I learnt a lot from this! Do you play much drop C when jamming? Thank you.
@Wilq59r The notes are identified as if we were in standard tuning, ergo giving us a 'standard' or consistent system for identifying the notes of the fretboard. It's common practice amongst teachers to do this, helping to avoid unnecessary confusion.
Cool video, I like CGCGGE tuning because i'm a Soundgarden fan... it creates some mezmerising droning riffs too! ...by the way, you look like Jesus... a stoner Jesus
@natsalsmi28 ...yeah their main tuning was drop D, they only have like 5 songs on CGCGGE... those were "Head Down", "Half", "Pretty Noose", "Burden In My Hand" and "Never The Machine Forever" but you can also play "Mailman" in that tuning
@pearljamporch just been experimenting with tunings, this is just what ive been looking for, my room sounds like a grizzly bear is tearing chunks outta some poor animal. @gsogoz great tutorial by the way
'PLAY FROM YOUR FUCKING HEART'. That's pretty much it. Stoner isn't a guitar tuning or a pre-made serie of stoned out power chords.. It's all about the feeling, honesty and raw emotion you put into a riff or anything else in life. There are no teachings for that king of stuff. Anyway, rock on. Just wanted to share what I've learned about this thing you call stoner rock. Play what you want to play. there are no boundries.
@cripplas you know that music theory is a real thing right? you can play from your hear all you want but if you fucking suck at music it doesn't matter at all
@cripplas Woah dude, were you out or something? You're right and all, it is all about the feeling of playing stoned but it sounds like you're making a huge deal out of something that's pretty insignificant. I love playing stoned, you lose all your restrictions and just play from your fucking heart (love the Bill Hicks reference btw). But yeah dude, don't take everything so seriously ;)
@SaintFookinJimmy well, I don't really think I take myself or anything too serious. That's just my view on it, I don't try to force it into someone. Looking back, my statement sounded kinda moody, but meh.. It's just that I usually find guitar lessons almost useless - and for stoner completely useless. Anyway, nice you got the bill hicks reference ;) peace
Thumbs up very much! There is a good amount of information in this video, I will be watching it a few more times to make sure I understand it all. It would be cool to see what you could do in Open Gsus4 (DGCGCD) which I like to play bar chord drones in.
Hi, been enjoying your videos for some time, could you perhaps show a video explaining how bands like The Jesus Lizard and Unwound make their sound so ... for lack of a better term, noisy? I don't know how else to explain it other than it is heavy on texture, less on melody, but I can never find the right chords.
hi, thansk for the vid. wondering what adjustments to use on my amp to get a similar sound. iam trying maximum gain and low tone but the open E is covering anything.
@aftereightball The gain was set to 6, bass and middle were set to 7 and treble was on 9. I used my bandit amplifier in this video recorded with the Zoom H2. That's why I don't use too much gain. It can get a little muddy.
I do this kinda stuff while improvising a lot! It's so simple yet lovely! ^^

is it stoner rock because it sounds boring as hell? I think the proper method for performing stoner rifts consists of:
1. Smoke a load
2. Play guitar
