what's so amazing about this scene is that it was actually A BLOOPER, the explosives failed to detonated in the right sequence. What did Heath did? what a true professional would have. He remained in character, struggled with the detonator, and once the explotion kicked in, resumed the scene with all the naturality in the world

it was so good they decided to leave it intact on the movie. You just CANT find actors that good anymore ='(

No, the idea was they couldn't set off all the explosions at once without Ledger getting caught in the blast, so they added in a beat as if something went wrong. This gave him ample time to leg it. (If the main explosion went off and he was in proximity, he would probably have been hospitalized from the word "go".)
