  • "it's very brown looking over there" There's something that has always bothered me! Real life isn't limited to washed out greens and browns!

  • I like how he showed a screen shot for the game Pitfall when he said "pitfall".

  • my girlfriend has an uncanny valley

  • annoying voice is annoying

  • @tulud

An annoying comment is annoying, too.

  • @Soulsphere001

smelly vagina is smelly (your moms)

  • @tulud

I think you meant your mom's, but I could be mistaken.

  • @Soulsphere001

nahh i was just sniffing your moms bunghole last night, it smelled like dead squirrel

  • @tulud

That's odd, since you don't even know who my mom is or if she's even still alive. So, yeah, I guess it must have been your mom you were smelling. It might be a good idea to stop practising incest.

  • @Soulsphere001

nahh i was sniffing your moms bunghole last night just before i came inside her

  • @tulud

You actually had full-on sex with you own mother? That's just disgusting and far too much information.

  • @Soulsphere001

nah it was your moms pussy, she was also on her period, you prolly didnt know it but she perioded all over your face last night

  • @tulud

Not possible. Women stop having their periods after they reach a certain age, which is called menopause. You might want to look it up and learn something.

  • @Soulsphere001

not your mom tho, she was like the niagra falls on ur face

  • we will never pass the uncanny valley until we have fully replicated the human brain or A.I. if you will. but then when that happens, i forsee another form of civil dispute or possibly even war to recognize them that those A.I. has the right to protect itself.

  • I laughed my ass off when I saw Keanu Reeves. Great presentation! Thank you!

  • Also remember that it is the stylized titles that are the most memorable. Graphics are relative. Crysis looks great now, but just 5 years from now, it will be just another old game with old graphics. In contrast I totally remember the cel shading of Wind Waker because it contributed to the atmosphere. Imagine Wind Waker with Crysis-like graphics. Totally forgettable. But the drawn waves and the cartoon wind lines drawn in the air make the sea more realistic than dull but impressive DX11 waves.

  • The problem with the uncanny valley concept is that there is currently nothing that has passed the valley. So How do we even know if the graph rises after the "fall"? We know it has to rise, but I think the valley is much wider while the rise is much steeper.

  • Oh jesus, you brought me back awful memories of that "Tin Toy" short. That baby was HIDEOUS.

  • Strong Bad (Team Girl Squad) brought me here ;-)

  • Once again you make some great points. But I am LOVING my photo-realistic skyrim right now. Even with all the kinks left to iron out. And brown is beautiful.

  • I want to like this, but then I'd ruin the quads,

    2222 likes people!

  • @LowestofheDead 2 late.

  • REAL IS BROWN!!!

  • Hence why The Wind Waker looks great

  • OMG! Toejam and Earl soundtrack?! WIN!

  • Did anyone else find that his voice seemed really wierd (almost cartoony) in this video? Especially compared to his newer videos.

  • @kelsyk01 yeah i find it annoying it's like at an increased pitch

  • Am I weird for playing this and the new PATV version side by side at the same time?

  • Master Chief avoids the uncanny valley not because of stylisation, but because you can't see the characters face and as such you leave room for your imagination. If all the characters in the final fantasy movie obscured their faces with helmets the uncanny valley effect would have been dramatically reduced.

  • omfg... you just blew my mind... that never never never happened to me on youtube... on the side note, not many are aware that when they complain about graphics in a game, the truth of the matter is, they are judging the artistic design. if you're really want to judge the graphic, one must first arcknowldge the art style whether it is celshade, color layering, or post render then judge the presentation based on the resolution, realtime shadow or not, bloom, texture size, etc.

  • Is it just me, or is this version better then the version that was posted on penny arcade?

  • why was this episode posted on penny arcade today???

  • Really?

Ripping off your self from 2008?

    That's just low.

    ...

    ;)

  • WTF they just made an episode about the same thing....

  • Okay, that "it's very brown-looking over there" comment cracked me up. XD

  • This was surprisingly educational :)

  • shouldn't he update the description to patv

  • Side thought: Does this mean that if space is full of humanoid aliens, like in Star Trek, then we as humans are going to freak, since they'll look so human-like that they'll end up in the uncanny valley?

  • @TomLuTon

Hmmm. Possible, but I think the fact that its a living organism would negate it. We seem to only really freak out about the valley when its mechanical or otherwise inorganic.

  • @TomLuTon I don't think so.

  • lol at Improve voice acting being FFX "HA HA HA HA HA"

  • Jesus Christ those robots in the beginning were so creepy.

  • Is Leon from resident evil 4 photo realistic? he might be my favorite...

  • @InvisibleHandgun I wouldn't say Photo realistic. He skates a fine line between stylized and realism.

  • @Talario I agree, after i watched this i went and played it for a while, It comes close to both, and without falling into the uncanny valley (in my opinion... except Ashley, because no human could be that annoying/dumb)

  • I knew about uncanny valley was, but this video discussed it very well. Funny, informative, presented some original points in a concise and interesting way. Great job, man.

  • lol screw up = SOTP

  • Very good video, funny and informitive!!

  • I think the uncanny valley can work good for horror games.

  • @mesterlinkx Actually, Extra Credits has a video about this. I forgot what it's called, but it's a Halloween episode where they discuss how game developers make scary games scary. Find it on the Escapist website, I guess.

  • oh my! i've read about the uncanny valley before, but the way you presented it really made the difference. this video is soooo goooood!

  • Comment removed

  • I always preferred the stylized side of the valley. The realistic part is amazing to watch and sometimes I can't tell the difference between real life and the game until I give it a double take, but if you make it too realistic, doesn't that take away from the purpose of the game- to escape reality? The reason I love the non-realistic side of the valley is because there's no way they can exist. Toon Link won't happen, Pokemon won't happen, and that's what makes it more enjoyable.

  • @AramanthOfMari man we are opposites yet one in the same i love photo realism but i like the imagination of fantasy it presents reality with the choices you make in real life but do not have the detramental consequences that they would carry in reality this attributes to my love of the elder scrolls series(11/11/11 SKYRIM WOO) fall out and most of the older call of duties but i see what you mean an we have a common ground we often play games to escape reality

  • @pimp963 *Shrug* to each his own. It's not like science vs. religion where you HAVE to choose a side. As long as you have reasons for liking one side or the other, more power to you. :D

  • @AramanthOfMari you can choose science and religion, you know? I'm a soon to be informatic engineer, and I think creationism was the way god chose to create humanity. Hmm I think am off topic in a gamer conversation, couldnt just avoid that comment of urs xD

  • Heh, Keanu Reeves as almost indistinguishable from a human being.

I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.

  • *shadow of the colossus picture*

..."and unlike the Colossal expense of..."

    Subtle!

  • I'm surprised that you never brought up uses for the uncanny Vally. It would be fantastic for a horror game to give something an air of wrongness, if used correctly.

Although I have seen accidental occurrence of this. A friend of mine had a game where the characters looked like big wooden dummies, fake hair and all... But with photo-realistic faces. The worst part is the faces didn't match the heads in proportions... They looked tapped on... Creepy.

  • @XzoahX They actually talked about the uncanny valley on horror games.

  • Comment removed

  • And then there's the uses in the Uncanny Valley effect, too. If you wanna underline that there is something simply creepy about a certain character in a game or whatever, Uncanny Valley is the place to go to... For a prime example: Half-Life's G-man. Take one look at even a still picture of him and you can tell that he is human, only, not really. See him IN ACTION and yOU get th-at *breath* first HU-n-ch conFIrmed, Mr. FREE-man... Remember kids: Tropes Are Not Bad. Tropes Are Tools.

  • Low budget games then should never try to achieve such photo-realistic potential. They'll ruin the game and their wallets...and their investors.

  • grate!!

  • at 2:42, the one thng that makes the crying woman lookk unreal is red cheeks and eyes she doesn't have, but are present at any crying human. way to fuck up, quaticdream. maybe i look at details, yes, but those are what makes things realistic

  • Adorable cat at 1:46!

  • L.A. Noire blew my mind with its realism. It may be the first and only game to truly capture it so far. That said, realism can only be a spectacle for so long, and I was soon missing the stylized graphics from Rock Band and Bastion.

  • You had me at the Keanu Reeves passing-for-human point. =D

  • Just the reason I prefer stylized games over "realistic" ones...

  • Okay, if I had a cute little dog running to me yelling i love you, thats adorable a talking dog. But if their was a life sized robot with synthetic skin a rubber smile yelling i love you slowly strutting toward me, I would unload a shotgun into that thing's "face"

    Uncanny Valley.

  • Oh yeah, stylized beats creepy "Polar Express" people. Donkey Kong is still more fun than Final Fantasy.

  • Its inevitable; we will someday have some sort "Commamdet Data". Even then, it will still only be a simulation. Just like God

made Adam in his image, we make things in our image. Neither measure up to its creator.

  • That's why Mario is the best game ever.

  • Lest we forget that regardless of reaching for either side of the valley, believable characters are not built just on style and visuals, but also in personality and development as characters in and of themselves. Writing is a big part of what makes the Incredibles great, and "Spirits Within" just not.

  • I prefer stylization to realism. If art is an opinion of reality, merely copying reality doesn't say what you think about it. Sure the animation, voice acting and story can do that, but not as well as they visuals. The soul is in the visuals.

    Awesome video, btw.

  • This has just changed my life FOREVER!!!!!!

  • Toejam and Earl credits music!

  • Oh, little animation man, you make marketing interesting :)

  • REX ftw!!

  • lol keanu reeves

  • Realism is Brown

  • Ahah, this video is in the funny valley, that's definitively great!

  • 31 guys are characters created by square pictures

  • LA NOIRE is probably the best example of how and why to go for photo realism in videogame characters. Not only is it meant to draw you into the world of the game, accurate facial expressions are central to the game play. But then, look at these new BACK TO THE FUTURE games-- Would they be any more appealing if they were realistic instead of cartoony?

  • Everyone forgot rayman

  • Lmao I love how you threw in a pic of Keanu Reeves!

  • I've been watching you guys on Escapist for a while, I had no idea you had some stuff on youtube. Awesome.

  • The thing is. Nobody ever vent past the Uncanny Vally.

  • haha, awesome animation. needed to find out what the Uncanny Valley was, and this was perfectly entertaining and informative. you sound like one of the narrators on the Demented Cartoon Movie, jus' sayin'. :D

  • Great work man... great work.

  • This is why i am confused when people are concerned about the graphics for star wars: the old republic.

Stylised realism is a new approach, and im keen to find out my sub-concious reaction attachment to it.

  • Very informative. I think I should show my dad this next time I try to talk to him about graphics.

  • Keanu made me lol

  • XD @ 3:33

    The three red arrows.

You sir, are exceptionally good at dry humor.XD

  • Gotta love that subtle humor he adds to his videos.

  • You sir, are awesome.

  • great video! :D

  • TBH, I've not been too keen on "photo realistic" games either. It seems that people care so much about the detail of things, that they seem to forget what gaming is all about: gameplay!

Besides, some of the stylised games are pretty awesome.

  • @SamanthaJFordie type in Extra Credits. That is this guy's show on the escapist (if you didn't know). there are tons of more eps uploaded there.

  • How bout combining those two sides of the valley, moving between each seemlessly and with care.

  • take the damn filter off your voice, it's giving me a headache

  • @kmfda I don't like it either, but I've watched his videos long enough that I actually don't even notice it anymore.

  • I <3 Okami

  • am i the only one who doesn't experience the Uncanny Valley none of it looks strange to me

  • Rebacca black 4:01 ?

  • This video was uploaded 3 years ago. We are now in 2011, and we have climbed out of the uncanny valley, it still costs loads of money, but we are finally here. Don't believe me? Go play Uncharted 2. Now.

  • Bullshit, Master Chief is completely realistic. Aside from his height everything about him is realistic, and his height is explained by genetic engineering. Halo doesn't aim for photorealism, but its characters are never stylized.

I say fuck stylization. Look at Crysis 2 - real time rendered video games can have practically photorealistic human faces, facial expressions and realistic body animations now. The only place where stylization still makes sense is in kids movies because it's "cute".

  • @SuckItLily : You don't understand what "style" is do you? I love Uncharted 2 and marvel at how beautiful it looks, but I love games that aren't realistic as well. Super Mario Galaxy for instance has a dreamy style to it that shows off a lot of creativity. A lot of games benefit from style over realism and only a few franchises like Uncharted, God of War, Gears of War, and Crysis can pull it off.

  • @WaddleDee105 Just because something is stylized doesn't mean it can't be photorealistic. I'm not saying they should Mario look like an actual fat plumber in his 30s or 40s, if by stylization you mean character design and choice of colors then I agree, that can give a game a unique atmosphere. I'm saying we have the technology needed to simulate a credible environment at 60 frames a second. We have the power to make Mario look like he's actually there, no matter his actual appearance.

  • @SuckItLily

Then I say fuck photo realism. video games as of late have been trying too hard to emulate reality. If I wanted photo realism I'd go outside. Looks pretty real outside if you ask me.

  • @leinad667 It's not that easy either. I was stating that Mario is a character that should always stay in his comic realm, overexaggerated colors and funny proportions etc. But Mario is also a lighthearted jump'n'run character. If a developer wants to tell a mature story then that's best done using a highly realistic style. You can relate to the emotions of cartoon characters but you couldn't relate to their deepest thoughts or dark desires. For that you need the faces of L.A. Noire.

  • @SuckItLily

On that I will agree with you. Let both of them develop separately but at the same pace. It would be a shame if the creative imagination of stylization is left behind in our race to cross the uncanny valley.

  • Idk... I'd kinda consider MC to be realistic. I mean, That's pretty much what someone in an exoskeleton would look like...

  • Very interesting, thanks.

  • try watching these on mute lol.

  • It's really dumb when people change their voice pitch, like they do in South Park. It's not funny, faggots.

  • @kourosh89 It's not supposed to be funny. He just thought his voice sounds boring.

  • If I wanted perfect graphics I'd go outside.

  • @RedneckSkippy But the gameplay is awful.

  • @RedneckSkippy

    Amen

  • @RedneckSkippy

Yea but you will have to upgrade when you get older and your eye sight starts to go

  • @RedneckSkippy To me stylized is perfect.

  • @RedneckSkippy But reality has way too many limitations.

  • @RedneckSkippy lack of AA

  • @RedneckSkippy Lucky you then, JAPAN has just made a TV that had PERFECT Picture. Everyone will be able to buy it within a few more years, then there be no need to go outside :D as it is picture perfect! sooo soo many pixels =o

  • @RedneckSkippy You can't kill aliens outside.

  • @RedneckSkippy Thank you. I 'd rather play Mario basketball than NBA2K. I'd rather go outside and play real basketball in fact.

  • @RedneckSkippy Yeah but there's always lag at rush hour.

  • Great. Liked it allot

  • Your understanding of the psychology and meaning behind all this is commendable.

  • how high pitched is his voice

  • @cowlickreviews He is a real life smurf.

  • It very brown looking over there, DA DOM TISH!

  • Hah, very brown looking huh. I know what'cha mean. Buttt... it doesn't -have- to be.

  • This is why i like to draw in a cartoon-ish style. I'm not good enough to make my drawings look very realistic so whenever I try it just looks like...meh.

  • @ShyGuyXXL Same here, every realistic person I draw has this zombie-ish stare...

  • TV Tropes will ruin your life!

  • @MrHinchapelotas it did the same to me

  • @MrHinchapelotas

    It already has.

  • @MrHinchapelotas If you're talking about the website then i completely agree its sooooooooo addicting

  • @MrHinchapelotas Its certainly ruined mine(I betcha I'll still be on that site 4 hours later.

  • Excellent speech

  • Ironically, All my favourite characters are either too old to apply, or in the photorealistic spectrum.

And while mario and other nintendo characters are recogniceable, they're shallow and not very great characters.

  • For me the final fantasy characters are in the uncanny valley.

  • You could have summed up this entire lecture with one word: verisimilitude.

  • toejam and earl music :-}

  • Where did you get that pic of Solid Snake from MGS4?

  • Loved the "brown" comment. It's so depressingly true.

  • this presentation was educational and very entertaining, thanks! but are modern final fantasy characters actually "stylized"? in terms of fashion sense probably, but anatomically, i thought they were striving for a more photo-realistic look (except ff9, ff7, ff tactics etc.)

  • I'd say Metal Gear Solid 4 was stylisation with realistic textures (the best for more realistic video games to be honest, and way better than photorealism.)

The uncanny valley theory is reaching for a false goal, you'll never be able to replicate reality without a feeling of uneasiness even if the graphics are amazing. Think of Invasion of the Body Snatchers...

  • @thejobloshow I don't know i think if it (games) got to be 100% realistic looking it can actually make certain genres more believable and appealing. Like a game like heavy rain IMO would be amazing if it had photo-realistic graphics.

  • This is the reason why the burger king is so scary.

  • Why is it all the "realistic" CG is SO BLOODY SHINY? SHINY DOES NOT EQUAL GOOD.

  • @NuclearDuckie An nVidia staffer once said, tongue in cheek, "If you can't make it better, make it bigger. If you can't make it bigger... make it shiny!"

  • my only problem with PR is that if im playing CoD and it looks/sound/feels like im killing a real person, im not going to want to play. i don't want to kill real people, and its the fact that im not that makes certain games so fun (CoD, GTA ect.).

  • Stylization = Awesome

  • photo realistic games are always ruined for me when there is some sort of extended kissing or love scene occurs. it always takes me out of the experience because, it just looks weird. these type of scenes always resonate a lot better when they are off screen and implied, or not to intense

  • @wtboone Ah, you mean the whole touching, hugging and kissing and fake dry-humping scenes that's growing so popular nowadays? (*CoughsWitcherMassEffectDragonAgeCoughs*)

Yeah... There's definitely something off with the animation, or something unsettling or oddly distracting about the background/foreground (such as a non-moving shepard while he gets a sensual dance show).

We're not really there yet... And I think the best sensual dancing I've seen to date is probably in The Saboteur...

  • Could Mori-san's theory eventually come into play in regards to motion gaming, should this trend continue? I mean, the various Wii games have became huge bestsellers since the system's release, but every game that has thus far used motion control has only provided a shallow, condensed version of the activity they simulate. What if they were to start making games that ALMOST perfectly simulate the human experience but not quite? Do you think there exists an uncanny valley in motion gaming?

  • In terms of voice acting animation LA noire is the only thing i've seen come close to "the other side" type this--------> "LA Noire first ingame trailer HD" and click the one that says 3 minutes. then watch the face of the guy who's being interrogated at 2:11. It's hard to believe this is a video game!

  • Our minds already stylize, because we can't handle all the details.

  • you sound like yakko warner

  • 6:30 that bitch is just ugly.

  • Uncharted has come extremely close. The character animations are near perfection.

  • @kurt2552 Look up LA Noire facial animations

  • @thangQanime Yes but Uncharted sticks on the left side of Uncanny Valley. LA Noire is creeping up the right side of it but isn't there yet

  • @joevictor53 Technically LA Noire is already on the right side. I think you mean it is creeping up in appeal. I definitely wouldn't place it IN the uncanny valley and it's not on the left side but it's not quite indistinguishable in terms of animation.

  • @thangQanime LA Noire is on the right side. But it's not at top of the right side. By creeping up, I really should of said technology. LA Noire is showing that we're almost there. But still games like Heavy Rain and LA Noire still aren't perfect in their looks

  • @joevictor53 L.A. Noire is also employing some of the most interesting technology I've seen for motion capture. It's definitely taking large steps in the right direction...

It's also interesting to note that it takes all that many cameras to properly extrapolate the data and create a near photo-realistic 3D portrait of someone as well, yet many other small details would nevertheless cause some trouble (lack of polygons, extremely minute imperfections to the face, texture and shadowing).

  • "Doesn't everyone know this stuff already?" lmao classic :)

  • 2:43 suprise butt secks?

  • Number 112000, how odd! -.-'

Partial problem in this is that sometimes designers can't incorporate everything into a game, it must have boundaries as we are now...

  • HAHA Keanu Reeves
