I am a first year college student, and will be graduating in 2015 with an Accounting degree. My dream was to be an civil engineer, but it was destroy by the economy. No homes are being built, or construction being rebuilt, that's why I'm looking at accounting. No one enjoy doing taxes, I haven't taking classes that involve with basic accounting subject yet. I believe that a job as an accountant is more secure than civil engineer, therefore I'll give up my dream in this life time until the next.

MY father told me college is only good if you can go for free. Here in GA we have the Hope scholarships funded by the number/stats-illiterates that play the lotto. I have a Bachelor's in Management from Georgia State and the most I have made in the past 4.5 years is 13.75/hr. The scary part is that I'm a white guy with solid credit , work history and no criminal record. THAT IS THE NEW AMERICA FOR YOU!!!

@geir44 Also, the other problem is so many people are out of work and looking for a job that when places hire people again, they grab the people with more experience first so the college grads with no experience and pushed down again. A lot of people who get in with companies make the mistake by taking promotions because then they will end up making more money and when companies cut the fat, they will most likely do it where people are making the most money.

Or better yet, skip the programming and work for yourself. Be your own boss and reject the rat race that went to school to get good grades to land a mediocre job that traps them in a cycle of never ending debt and sadness. Figure out what the rich do and copy them. It will lead to your true success and ultimate freedom. There were many entrepreneurs created during the Great Depression than in any time in history.

Good reason to skip the parties and booze, study hard and get/keep your grades up. FWIW, the unemployment rate among college-educated is far less than those without a degree. Companies aren't hiring much right now, true, but for those already employed and educated, your chances are better than those who thought that that factory job would do them until retirement.

The 1950s are over, folks. An education is still the best way to go.

Make yourself marketable; act professional-and STUDY.
