Great game, at the time it was strange playing as (cough cough) reeedannnn. But now looking back over the series as a whole i realise it was very important to play as someone els just to see snake in a different light. I mean look at how the intresting plissken scenes worked out and trying to peice together what snake was up to. This game is 20% gameplay, 80& pointless cut-scenes. The dozen or so cut-scene s leading up to the last boss is literally like an hour long and it is extremely hard to follow the story-line in this game if you have never played the games before this one.

Playing the game itself I think the gameplay and graphics were great but just when it came to playing Raiden he ruined the whole game for me. Thank god they brought out Twin snakes, Snake eater and MGS4 because you play Snake again.
I will however give Raiden another chance and buy Rising when it comes out.

Some people do not understand the importance of Raiden in the MGS series. for one Raidens character is the antithesis of Snake character. Snake is rough, experienced, and wise while Raiden is young, naive, and inexperienced. I believe that the development of Raidens character is one of the best character growth and development in the MGS series. As some have noted he is there to give us the view of snake being a mentor. also when snake dies u now have an xtra developed character! MGS RISING!

I would also say this games graphic's are one of the best on the ps2. It could still hold up against some of this gens graphics. Most games this gen just look a little better than this. I think MGS4 is the only game that I would consider next gen. And also Mass Effect 2 but that's it. MGS2 came out early in the PS2's lifespan and I don't think they ever topped it. And MGS4 is really the only game that has used the PS3 fully. They really know how to get everything out of a console.

@Armidillodude If you liked Metal Gear solid 2 but found the plot confusing and disjointed, and even left with no answers. Don't worry! That's how it was supposed to be! Raiden was Kojimas representation of the basic player. And it worked, think about you begin Big Shell as Snake and then your codename is changed to Raiden, even he isnt happy with the change. The Metal Gear series has always had multiple meanings. I never realised how great this game was, because like Raiden and any idiot fanboy I just wanted to play as Snake.
MGS2&3 should come to ps3 like GOW1&2 collection did. put it out for maybe 40 bucks with trophies. ppl would gobble that up so fast. its a win win for konami & fans

20 hours of game play my ass! i just played the whole game through for the first time (i know im like 10 years late) and i beat it in 11 hours and 15min. the gameplay was great but i found the story to be a bit lacking. the only character that i cared about was otocan.

If you played MGS1 on the Playstation instead of the Gamecube, you would really see what an improvement it was. All of the game mechanics includuding diving, first person shooting, and hanging off rails all werent in the original. Those game features were invented through this game, and placed in the remake. So you really have to give credit to it for THAT. On the other hand, I admit the story really didn't live up the greatness of MGS1. Thankfully Hideo Kojima made up for that with MGS3 and 4
@nitroklop MGS3 and 4 were actually big let downs in terms of story. Metal Gear Solid 2 has been likened to a post-modern masterpiece and for good reason.
The story is deep and layered in ways you probably never even imagined.
Yes the story left the player with many questions, (questions that Kojima actually never intended to answer, however due to death threats and the utter stupidity of fan boys he released MGS3 and MGS4. (these actually have alleged parallels to Hideo's feelings on the games

I would have to say 3 has the best story and 4 is a great masterpieces that perfects what every game wanted to do. @nitroklop I like raiden, When I played the game when it first came out, I didn't mind playing as him for one second. Snake is still an important part of the game. I like how at first Raiden contacts Campbell, but then by the end he contacts Snake more. And the reason they made you play as Raiden makes perfect sense. You get to see Snake from a different perspective! Raiden is a real complex character, and people complain and say he looks like a female! WTF kinda complaint is that?
@CptKirk377 I always liked Raiden as well. I still prefere Snake over him, but I don't mind playing as him at all. Like you said, he IS a complex and interesting character with an interesting past that you uncover by the end of the game.

technically, 3 is the prequel to all of them, but if u play them in numerical order, you'll have a greater sense of amazement.
get mgs1 if u can find it. i sense that you have a ps2. If you feel it worthy enough after you've played the third, i suggest you get a ps3 for the fourth. Yes, it's that damn good. Look at the review. Game spot rarely gives tens. Do yourself a favor and experience this masterful series.
i'm glad i chose to get MGS collection last year for PS2. It's worth it especially to those who were new to the series. MGS2's opening theme by the way was very emotional & probably my favorite in the series together w/ MGS4.

i think & i hope they would be great. I'm going to buy Rising & continue supporting the MGS series. I understand in playing Raiden as main since i respected Hideo Kojima & Konami team that made MGS great.Yeah try getting both the collection & MGS4 cause it's worth it. For the most part, yes. The animations and framerate are buttery smooth, and the cutscenes are awesome. Certainly the prettiest PS2 game when it came out.
I didnt like playing as Raiden. His nose is weird and he's like a sissy and when you save your game rose talks to you for like 3 minutes its so annoying

MGS4 is amazing as well. Do you have Portable Ops for the PSP. Two more MGS games ae coming, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP which is gonna have co-op... and Metal Gear Solid: Rising which is gonna be multiplat on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. I am buying Rising for the 360 :)
graphics are basically the same on both consoles , and games just seem to me to be so much better/fluid on 360 , my ps3 was just their for exclusives I couldnt get on my 360.

This game is very good, even with Raiden on it. The only thing I dont like its that near the end the cut scenes are gigantic, but the plot is still great.

Well Snake Eater is a Prequel to Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, so you didn't really play it out of order. As for you playing as Raiden, that's the second part of the game. the first part of the game is called the Tanker chapter, where you play as Snake. Then you go onto the Plant chapter where you play as Raiden for the rest of the game. In any case, you should have started with Metal Gear Solid 1 for the PS1 first :P

So you really have to give credit to it for THAT. On the other hand, I admit the story really didn't live up the greatness of MGS1. Thankfully Hideo Kojima made up for that with MGS3 and 4

@nitroklop MGS3 and 4 were actually big let downs in terms of story. Metal Gear Solid 2 has been likened to a post-modern masterpiece and for good reason.
The story is deep and layered in ways you probably never even imagined.
Yes the story left the player with many questions, (questions that Kojima actually never intended to answer, however due to death threats and the utter stupidity of fan boys he released MGS3 and MGS4. (these actually have alleged parallels to Hideo's feelings on the games

@Xirbtt Dude, where did you get these ridiculous ideas? I played them all 1-4 and LOVED ALL OF THEM. I would have to say 3 has the best story and 4 is a great masterpieces that perfects what every game wanted to do. I have no idea where you figured 3-4 where just for the fans, Hideo planned on 2 being the last yes but that was before he finished the actual game.

Like the theory that Raiden is almost a literal incarnation of the player- "craving stealth action while not questioning why"
And MGS3 and MGS4 having parallels to Kojima's feelings on them. (MGS4 basically saying, please die MGS series, at least for Kojima)

@nitroklop I like raiden, When I played the game when it first came out, I didn't mind playing as him for one second. Snake is still an important part of the game. I like how at first Raiden contacts Campbell, but then by the end he contacts Snake more. And the reason they made you play as Raiden makes perfect sense. You get to see Snake from a different perspective! Raiden is a real complex character, and people complain and say he looks like a female! WTF kinda complaint is that?

@CptKirk377 I always liked Raiden as well. I still prefere Snake over him, but I don't mind playing as him at all. Like you said, he IS a complex and interesting character with an interesting past that you uncover by the end of the game.

The game puts snake in the "legend" status.
While playing as raidin the game always talks how the tanker mission was done by the legenddary snake. And the play is like "damn, i was him"

technically, 3 is the prequel to all of them, but if u play them in numerical order, you'll have a greater sense of amazement.
get mgs1 if u can find it. i sense that you have a ps2. If you feel it worthy enough after you've played the third, i suggest you get a ps3 for the fourth. Yes, it's that damn good. Look at the review. Game spot rarely gives tens. Do yourself a favor and experience this masterful series.

i'm glad i chose to get MGS collection last year for PS2. It's worth it especially to those who were new to the series. MGS2's opening theme by the way was very emotional & probably my favorite in the series together w/ MGS4.

i think & i hope they would be great. I'm going to buy Rising & continue supporting the MGS series. I understand in playing Raiden as main since i respected Hideo Kojima & Konami team that made MGS great.Yeah try getting both the collection & MGS4 cause it's worth it. I got the collections just last year cause i never had the chance to play MGS1, 2 & 3 during their release days. Trying to complete MGS4 so far & what can i say besides that it's great & deserved to be played.

For the most part, yes. The animations and framerate are buttery smooth, and the cutscenes are awesome. Certainly the prettiest PS2 game when it came out.

MGS4 is amazing as well. Do you have Portable Ops for the PSP. Two more MGS games ae coming, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP which is gonna have co-op... and Metal Gear Solid: Rising which is gonna be multiplat on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. I am buying Rising for the 360 :)

This game is very good, even with Raiden on it. The only thing I dont like its that near the end the cut scenes are gigantic, but the plot is still great.

I am completely confused, i got this game today, and i played for about 5 hours, and i only played as RAIDEN, but in this review wasnt that solid snake in the video. I played the games in completely the wrong order too, i played snake eater first, then i got this

At the beggining their is aload of options about playing for the first time, i forgot which one it is called but, choose that one and you play the whole tanker scenario as snake before the plant scenario

Well Snake Eater is a Prequel to Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, so you didn't really play it out of order. As for you playing as Raiden, that's the second part of the game. the first part of the game is called the Tanker chapter, where you play as Snake. Then you go onto the Plant chapter where you play as Raiden for the rest of the game. In any case, you should have started with Metal Gear Solid 1 for the PS1 first :P
