  • I'm guessing this is around 1796 or so.

  • 6.06 Matthews: "sour bastard" !

  • I've been studying some of this history and didn't know how the quarter deck was treated. It was for officers only unless someone had to pass through and had permission so it was out of respect that he lets the french captain to stand there while coming along side of the Indy. In Roman times the one who'd captured the head of the other army would have them tied to the back of their chariott to show them off. It wasn't the case here and Horatio is embarassed because of it. My VAST opinion. :)

  • Does anybody know if there's some kind of documentary on the kinds of ships used in this series? I've never counted them but there seems to be a lot or are they CGI? Like the ones in the Spanish "fleet?" What is this smaller ship called and was it used often? Who ownes them and are they replicas? I'd very much enjoy going on one for a week or so. Being part of the crew. That kind of thing. Not realistic but a good dream! I'll cook! lol Whose with me? Songs

  • back when itv made some good programs not the reality crap u get now.

  • Horatio's belief in the captain's word is proven, not when he gives back his sword so much but when he turns his back to him. A handshake was first used as a sign of trust. It usually was the right hand, your sword hand and it left the upper body exposed to the person you were facing./ I wondered which King George this was and it was the 4th.The mad man's son and again, not a good very good king. I believe it wasn't the monarcy so much that the people respected but that they stood for England.

  • @Songsmirth

Not to be hugely annoyingly pedantic or anything, but I'm pretty sure that this episode is set when George III was still on the throne. It must be set before 1808 as that was the year that the French invaded Spain and threw the spanish into an alliance with Britain, and the Spanish are Britian's enemies in this episode. George III (as you say, the mad king) reigned until 1811 when his son took over as Regent, although he continued to be king in name until his death in 1820.

  • its a shame the French navy wasn't as prepared as the English I would've liked to see a republican invasion or at least the liberation of Ireland during the war

  • Hornblower makes me hard.

  • @atphilli How old are you? You must be able to reach the keyboard. . :(

  • request and... what?

  • As if a crappy little schooner like that would have marines

  • @SuperJogvan Bear in mind that little schooner was smuggling vital supplies past the British blockade. One or two marines to guard those supplies shouldn't be that unusual.

  • @tyrannusBE Good point. How can you tell it's a schooner please? It's beautiful. How many men to a crew for one? :) Songs

  • He's thrown away at least like 4 pistols throughout the series so far. I thought they were expensive : / haha

  • "HUNTER" LOL

  • dude OMG he just killed a 7 yr old???

  • @ColScots726

    He emm...just took a swim :D

  • Love it when Stiles throws the kid overboard.

  • Merchant ships didn't have anywhere near the crew that a man-of-war did, they didn't have to sail the ship and fight both sides at the same time. And a little schooner like that one probably only had 30 guys on it. Hehe but Hornblower left the watering party marooned.

  • 3:54 lil french kid.bahaha

  • The bad characters are far too exaggerated. Here we have Hunter, hardly a redeeming moment is his short life in this series. Foresters characters were far more complex.

  • you've got to love these Hornblower vids. Honor (like someone said), Respect, Courage, Duty, at the least being a Gentleman!! The world is having drought of those.

  • 9 bloke to take a ship?

  • @shaun20k half the able crew are ashore

  • @shaun20k it's not as if every crew member is armed at all times

  • @shaun20k One word: Budget.

  • @shaun20k

It happened more than you'd expect, and in a straight fight to.

  • Stiles threw that brat in the water haha

  • capturing the ship looked so easy...

  • half the crew where ashore and the other other probaly drunk men and boys

  • No its King George frog face!

  • Indeed. This is great!

  • Thanks for uploading!

    Larry, Taiwan

  • lol

  • "No its King George frog face!" hilarious

  • I love when Stiles throws the kid overboard. I always laugh at that part.

  • Man, I thought Pellew was seriously angry at Hornblower for a second. :)

  • I love when Pellew does that. I think is joking shows how much he admires Hornblower and how he thinks of him almost as a son. It makes me smile.

  • what rank is hunter then?

  • he would be a mid-shipman

  • Keep an eye on the white collar tabs with button. The Royal Navy midshipmen STILL wear them and a lanyard. Cadets wear just the button and lanyard.

  • @IlluminatiOvIndiana Hey Illuminatjion. What was the white band on their sleves for? I noticed that they didn't have them before they declared war on the French but after that, they did. Has that got anything to do with it? Also, when Horatio gave Matthews the promotion of petty officer, was it something he got to keep and be paid more $ for? If you have any sites you like that would tell of the history of these navel times, I'd appreciate you giving them to me. Especially the slang. :)

  • They had so much honor in those days.

  • Shame or doubt upon one person frequently put the entire family to shame. That's why protecting one's pride and honour was so vital. If you were dishonourable, it reflected on your entire family.

  • I wish there was more emphasis on honor THESE days.

  • As do I!

  • i take offence sir. ic hallenge you to a duel

  • Well, even if I were a sir, I'm not sure I would accept your challenge. (dueling is [and was, even in the time period] illegal, y'know)

  • that did not stop them and by god it will not stop me. It would be fun to duel

  • Well, except for the dying/severely injured part. :)

  • no, it was forbidden in the army by the duke of wellington.

  • but the laws against it weren't enforced much back then

  • well said sir

  • @penwielder I agree.. I am very happy on our progress in technology, but there's like no one has a sense of honor towards anyone, if you take it side by side what there were back to the times that are shown in these series.

Example, a teenager wouldn't dare to dishonor her or his father or mother before. Nowadays, is seems like the persons who gave you life doesn't mean anything... It's sad.

  • @Atlantianis Well, keep in mind movies make things a bit more nostalgic. Then and now are two extremes. In those days honouring your father, church and king were expected, and followed to the point where showing honour was more important than exposing injustices, such as domestic abuse as a standard, corrupt clergy and a huge division in class justice. Today it's the opposite with children being taught that they are more important than anyone else. There needs to be a balance of the two.

  • @penwielder Here Here!

  • @penwielder don't forget it's a movie.

  • Comment removed

  • @penwielder It lasted well into the 20th century - look up Otto Kretchmer.....

  • @penwielder Exactly!

  • i love you so much for putting this up! one of the best series ever made (love you horation & archie)

  • Which movie covers Hornblower's fight with the Natividad?

  • never done during the modern films which these are but back in the 1950's captain hornblower was made into a film and it was there

  • I LOVE YOU FOR PUTTING THIS UP!!! *squees over her oldest favorite fandom*

  • Hornblower ROCKS!

  • "were here to fight them, sir"

"no, we are here to defeat them."

    epic stuff

  • LOL @ tossing the kid overboard!

  • "Bonjour mes ami....."

  • Rofl! They finally repainted that schooner!

  • OMG THATS HILARIOUS "No Its King George, Frog face"

  • I love the kids who grabs his leg "it'll take a bigger rat than you boy!"...whahaha...hilarious.

  • OWNED

  • "Huh?"

    -That was funny.

  • No, it's King George, Frog Face!
