@Twistercyclone Wut, FFXII is by far the easiest game so far. The bosses don't even scale to your levels so you can overtrain and pretty much 1 hit kill them.
@EricB042389 Not really, as long as you're smart enough to not attack them with your regular attack, they should be pretty easy to beat. I never remember fighting one boss in FFXII that was vaguely hard, whereas there were several of those in the other FF games.
@STRLOL I guess it depends on the level and strategy used. I found FFXII hard because I fought many of the bosses before they were recommended to add on the difficulty level (and I never used quickenings). It's the other FF that I found easier.... :P
(cont) have good strategies for boss fights (which only give AP), get lucky at some places like the black mages in Gizamaluke's and the Iifa Tree fights, and patience in others like Pandemonium when Zidane goes loco. As far as leveling up Dragon Crest and Thievery. Patience for theivery, just succesfully steal like 830 times and for Dragon Crest, get inflicted with virus and kill dragons outside Qu's Marsh. Well done man!
I'm finishing up this challenge right now, just beat the game with my level one party except for the 3 people that had to gain all the EXP in Memoria, which took me a good 20 attempts to get through lol but Ozma is definitely a hand full.
And for all the people that are saying this has to be a hack, it is not. Like lots of people have already said the formula for being able to do this is simple. Have Zidane flee from every random battle you get into, (will continue)
@Twistercyclone Pretty much luck, tho there are ways to reduce the frequency of these attacks. Ozma is less likely to use Meteor if as few as possible of the characters have reflect. Reason for this is that Ozma will not use Flare, Death or Holy, if everyone can reflect them. Which in turn increases the chance of other attacks.
As for Curse, reducing ozmas hp to below 50%, not having anyone in mini status, and inflicting darkness on him, are ways to reduce the frequency of curse.

If you want a new challenge, you should try to defeat him without the sidequest. (the gentle monsters). Gaïa is really more powerfull, always counter with curaga and attack every seconds, absorbs shadow and can't be hurt by normal attack.
@IceDarkBen if you're gonna act like you know everything about a spell, do your homework properly. Flare Star deals damage based on the level of the target it hits. The Formula goes 50 x target's level = damage. So, obviously, as my characters are all level 1, I have no problems with this spell.
Why shouldn't I have skills even if I'm level 1? AP can be obtained by having Zidane petrify random enemies. This prevents exp, but still gives AP.
And I agree cheating is bad, that's why I don't do it.

I know this video is ages old, and I may sound kinda noobish asking but, Why Eiko and not Dagger? I only ask because I frankly can't see a difference in the two..
@DeathPodJr Eiko has better White magic. Full Life in particular is much more useful than Dagger's more offensive-based summons. What Eiko lacks in pure summoning power she makes up for in being able to cast every white magic spell in the game, whereas Dagger trades healing and buffing to have a large assortment of "kill it now" summons.
i remember this guy years back level 99 and all , he kept doing his curse and meteor combo which annoyed me , i think theres more skill prob getting to him with level 1 as appose to beating him caus this guy is all luck , i beat FFx no sphere grid so i gots to try this game , congrats anyways it most of been one hell of a journey to get to this guy at level 1 :)
Why doesn't Ozma just spam Curse & Meteor like he does any time I fight him? Don't want to deny the work and skill involved in pulling this off, but you need incredible luck for him not to do that.
@EYVC1 Of course I need luck, and I got it. But don't think this is like the one and only time I fought against him. I didn't even count the many, many attempts I had at killing him before I was lucky enough to not get spammed by curse & meteor.
ummmmm guys listen Ozma is rather easy the only thing you need to kill him is good equipment a good plan and good chars like when i beat him at lvl 1 i used Steiner Freya Zidane and Vivi and im best with those chars and i also had good weapons and armor also i had very very good skills for Vivi and Steiner
It is impossible to beat Ozma if he uses Meteor because if he uses it the party will die and get resurrected only to be killed again by the following Curse.
Luck is the most important part of this challenge.
its impossible deal a Dragon's Crest dmg of 9999 with only level1 , you must've leveled up alot to be able to deal that damage. still i think its impossible without a cheat.
@bubbletearoxman Why is it impossible? Dragon's Crest deals damage that is based on nothing else than the NUMBER of dragons your party has killed. And how did i kill those dragons without leveling up? I killed them while having my party in virus status. Virus prevents them from gaining any exp, and i got them into virus status by fighting Yan's, having virus cast on me and run away. Then i killed the dragons, causing it to be fully possible to max out dragon's crest's damage.
i've heard many people say that ff9 is the easiest ff ever!!...mm i don't know exactly yet it's really easy...i'll try playing other ff by the way...dude!! you're really pure tactic

PS version ftw but it wasnt luck :O i just played a lot of cards and junctioned things right and i gots it on the youtube to prove it XD this is my next challenge or a ffx no sphere grid/customization/blitz ball challenge its just about how long you're willing to spend sitting at the computer lol no luck in any of this if you plan hard enough
@SchizoRiku the difference is that my other characters are not level 99. They only leveled at one point in the game where it is impossible to pass without leveling. But I've never used them. I went through the whole game only using lvl 1 chars. Thats where the challenge is.

@wogboypaul It is completely possible to do a level 1 game with no cheats. Run from all normal battles, and in forced battles, (that give EXP) you must defeat the enemies in such a way that you will not gain EXP from the fight. IE, winning with everyone Virus'd. Before you have access to the Virus status, you must kill forced enemies (like the Black Mages in Gizamaluke's Grotto) by petrifying them by having Quina attack with the Needle Fork and Add Status ability equipped.
Man, I didn't think it was possible. I couldn't have the patience to do something like this. It must have been difficult to keep the characters at level 1 throughout the game. Maybe after I finish my first playthrough ( I just got the game recently) I might try it. Anyway, awesome video!

I did it with Needle fork, and YES I needed a lot of luck, and YES I had to reset the console MANY times and start over.
Pandemonium? I had to level up a couple of the other characters (and never use them again), by having them fight while the rest of the party (Zidane included) were dead.
for this thing i had zidane lvl 66 vivi lvl 56 steiner lvl 56 and eiko lvl 51 .
i has viv iauto reflect and cast flare for 5000-6000 dmg steiner shock for 9999 eiko was abusing remedies like mad and used carnbuckle for reflect mostly to avoid berserked characters zidane was using healing items and holy shadow was absorbed -nulified
In a pretty clumsy way actually, if I might say. At least for getting it digitally for my PC. I didn't at first record this with having youtube in mind. It was only intended for my own personal use, and maybe show some of my friends that I did it, so I connected the PlayStation to a VHS player, and recorded it to a tape. Later, I used a tv card to transfer the VHS tape to my computer.
dude how did u keep from taking so much damage from ozmas attacks? how high is ur defense exactly? and how were u able to do all that damage on lvl 1 and cast those high lvl spells that use more mp than u had? what is your secret?
Level is not as important in this game as many people believe. Equipment does alot of the job as well, and some of ozma's attacks are based on target's level, vulnerability etc. etc. I was able to do great damage on him because the attacks I use do damage based on other factors than my stats. Example, quina's limit glove deals 9999 always when s/he has 1 HP. The attacks I use do not use more mp than I have, since that would be impossible. So there is no secret really, just alot of tactic.
thats pretty cool, but how did u defeat the other bosses in the game? some of them do well over 1000 hp damage. how did u even finish the game? is it ur defense? like is it really high or something? ive never seen someone do this before. either way, u are pretty skilled
All bosses have their weaknesses and strong sides, and it's about finding what attacks they use, and guard myself against those specific attacks and elements as much as possible, and also use attacks that I know the boss is weak against. And using good equipment I can also get my defense up to a good level. :)
Getting quina's hp to 1 is done by killing her off in battle and using phoenix down, and hoping for the hp to be 1. It will take some tries before it works, but eventually you will get it.
You get thievery as soon as you reach thievery. In Alexandria, go and synthesis Angel Bless. This has the thievery ability. Thievery power is based on the number of successfull steals Zidane has performed. :)
Virus helps alot, but I don't get that until later in the game, so in the beginning I have to rely on running from all the random battles. Boss battles don't give exp, so they are not a problem. There are a few battles that can't be avoided, where I have to use stop and petrify to avoid leveling up.
In the begining just after you beat the plant, you're running away from the little plant monsters. How did you do the one mandatory fight without petrify/anything from later in the game?
Wrong. Their level is based on the level of the characters you already have with you. The reason why you have never seen Eiko and Freya at level 1, is because you haven't tried keeping everyone at level 1.
Oh I can. It's hard, of course, takes alot of work, but that's what makes this a challenge. Level isn't everything in this game, and on a level 1-playthrough it all comes down to having the best fit equipment and abilities in every situation, and using the right tactics. That's what counts for most in Final Fantasy IX. Level is just a bonus to help you on your way.
2. Flare star does damage based on it's target's level. Since my level is 1, it doesn't hurt much.
3. It's true, ozma can act even when its ATB bar isn't full, because if I enter a command between his attacks, ozma's ATB fills up immediately. To prevent this, I enter my commands during the animation of ozma's attacks. This helps slow him down a bit.

ozima is a really lame looking boss hah, i am tryin this one too with the guides on gamefaqs but i hear in pandemonium you cant get past a few fights so you have to lvl up though i was woundering if there was a way to zombify yourself so you cant get xp from them. Find chocographs in Hot & Cold and get all the pieces. Once you have ocean and all 6 pieces the mist ocean one will unlock. Find it and Hey Presto! A gold chocobo. ;P

Well I found this level one-guide on gamefaqs, and I wanted a challenge and thought this had to be the ultimate one. So I tried out, thought I'd probably give up after a couple of hours, but then when I realized it was really possible to stay level 1, I got really excited about it.
it must have taken longer than 60 hours....60 hours is what it takes for me completing the game. But I ended up in level 70. You level 1? You must have had to restart the game countless times..so more like 1500 hours no? xD
I used about 60 game hours, and yes, of course I had to restart a huge amount of times, so sure I used alot more hours of gaming on that. But far from 1500. After all, training abilities like thievery and dragon's crest is what really takes up time. So let's make it 100... and 100 hours is far less than what i've "wasted" on say...a lot of tv series. Not to mention what a number of people uses on world of warcraft. so...

You got something wrong... lvl 1 doesn't mean no battles at all. it means no WINNING battles at all. There's a huge difference. Battling and escaping from it, does NOT give exp. And you can steal without winning the battle. See?
Limit Glove is learned by eating ONE enemy in a pair of two, and running from the battle before killing the other one.
Well you have no proof you haven't cheated. This is the only battle you got with characters in lvl 1? Show me some other hard battle where your character is level 1.
This is so fake, no way you could have gone through the entire game not gaining one level. You must have cheated big time. And to be in level 1 and do 9999 is not possible without cheats.
Come on, please don't say anything when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I have already stated many times in comments here why this is not fake, and given arguments to how and why this is fully possible. So if you think otherwise, you better come back cooking up some solid arguments, instead of acting like an idiot accusing people without any solid proof.

personally i think its impossible, considering all the stealing needed and dragon-killing for zidane and freya. my emulator save is at disc 2, madain sari with 7hours into the game. i doubt i can finish in 12hours. :/
I can tell you right now, that's not possible. As you said it yourself, building up the attacks and all the hard fighting at level 1 takes up way too much time.
Amazing video but I don't know how to do to fight Gaïa with lvl1 chars. Is this boss in the chocobo's heaven ? Then, you have to find all the treasures to access to this level. Is it possible to do so with lvl1 chars ? If it is possible, good job ^^

The game does require strategy and mastery of the Gambit system.

That's one of best black spells and it is neutral, so you can't absorb the element with an armor.
Besides you have skills but your are level 1? Impossible.

ummmmm guys listen Ozma is rather easy the only thing you need to kill him is good equipment a good plan and good chars like when i beat him at lvl 1 i used Steiner Freya Zidane and Vivi and im best with those chars and i also had good weapons and armor also i had very very good skills for Vivi and Steiner

It is impossible to beat Ozma if he uses Meteor because if he uses it the party will die and get resurrected only to be killed again by the following Curse.
Luck is the most important part of this challenge.

its impossible deal a Dragon's Crest dmg of 9999 with only level1 , you must've leveled up alot to be able to deal that damage. still i think its impossible without a cheat.

@bubbletearoxman Why is it impossible? Dragon's Crest deals damage that is based on nothing else than the NUMBER of dragons your party has killed. And how did i kill those dragons without leveling up? I killed them while having my party in virus status. Virus prevents them from gaining any exp, and i got them into virus status by fighting Yan's, having virus cast on me and run away. Then i killed the dragons, causing it to be fully possible to max out dragon's crest's damage.

@SchizoRiku the difference is that my other characters are not level 99. They only leveled at one point in the game where it is impossible to pass without leveling. But I've never used them. I went through the whole game only using lvl 1 chars. Thats where the challenge is.

@wogboypaul It is completely possible to do a level 1 game with no cheats. Run from all normal battles, and in forced battles, (that give EXP) you must defeat the enemies in such a way that you will not gain EXP from the fight. IE, winning with everyone Virus'd. Before you have access to the Virus status, you must kill forced enemies (like the Black Mages in Gizamaluke's Grotto) by petrifying them by having Quina attack with the Needle Fork and Add Status ability equipped.

I battled dragons, enough to hit 9999. But i did it with my party in virus status, which prevents any of them from gaining any exp.

Man, I didn't think it was possible. I couldn't have the patience to do something like this. It must have been difficult to keep the characters at level 1 throughout the game. Maybe after I finish my first playthrough ( I just got the game recently) I might try it. Anyway, awesome video!

well dude, its easily possible. simply consider the fact that when you're up against a boss like ozma, he will usually one or two hit ANYONE it doesnt matter what lv you are, in this way actually lv 1s can be beneficial you have less shit to keep track of, and like its stated in IX there are skills that will always do 9999 regardless of lv. SHEW!

probably eiko told zidane to get her a bunch of balls (probably innuendo on her part) and like the dunce zidane is, he raided the bouncy ball machine. Jacking off with all the balls, (wow this stuff just keep coming out wtf...) wasn't enough to piss Ozma off. When quina started eating them, oh man, Armageddon time.
y was freya there? amarant cant stand eiko, vivi was probably playing cards with dagger, and steiner wanted no part in this "dishonorable misconduct." plus, freya was bored.

You must lv up Zidane a little and I see he's at lv.1(105hp)
For beating Ozma it is possible at lv 1 and i believe you that you beat him at lv1
The only reason that Zidane is at lv 1 is that you use a code to gain 0 exp

It's not impossible,but how did you have him stay at lv 1 at Gizamaluke's Grotto or against the Beatrix soldiers in Cleyra?To beat them all with the Needle fork is impossible or you need a lot(a lot)of luck,Then in Pandemonium when you face the three monsters before facing Garland and Kuja,how did you beat themn without leveling up Zidane?
And one more thing,when you defeat Ozma you'll earn exp. and when I look the vid you earn 0 exp,so it seems that you use a gameshark code

I did it with Needle fork, and YES I needed a lot of luck, and YES I had to reset the console MANY times and start over.
Pandemonium? I had to level up a couple of the other characters (and never use them again), by having them fight while the rest of the party (Zidane included) were dead.

for this thing i had zidane lvl 66 vivi lvl 56 steiner lvl 56 and eiko lvl 51 .
i has viv iauto reflect and cast flare for 5000-6000 dmg steiner shock for 9999 eiko was abusing remedies like mad and used carnbuckle for reflect mostly to avoid berserked characters zidane was using healing items and holy shadow was absorbed -nulified

No, I had my party in virus status when I killed the 100 dragons. That way, they didn't gain any exp.

In a pretty clumsy way actually, if I might say. At least for getting it digitally for my PC. I didn't at first record this with having youtube in mind. It was only intended for my own personal use, and maybe show some of my friends that I did it, so I connected the PlayStation to a VHS player, and recorded it to a tape. Later, I used a tv card to transfer the VHS tape to my computer.

Level is not as important in this game as many people believe. Equipment does alot of the job as well, and some of ozma's attacks are based on target's level, vulnerability etc. etc. I was able to do great damage on him because the attacks I use do damage based on other factors than my stats. Example, quina's limit glove deals 9999 always when s/he has 1 HP. The attacks I use do not use more mp than I have, since that would be impossible. So there is no secret really, just alot of tactic.

thats pretty cool, but how did u defeat the other bosses in the game? some of them do well over 1000 hp damage. how did u even finish the game? is it ur defense? like is it really high or something? ive never seen someone do this before. either way, u are pretty skilled

All bosses have their weaknesses and strong sides, and it's about finding what attacks they use, and guard myself against those specific attacks and elements as much as possible, and also use attacks that I know the boss is weak against. And using good equipment I can also get my defense up to a good level. :)

How the hell do i get quina´s hp to 1 for limit glove? whenever i use a pinion or a anything it goes from 2 to 4 to 6 to 10!
What´s the earliest you can get thievery? does is power increase by stealing or by using it?

Getting quina's hp to 1 is done by killing her off in battle and using phoenix down, and hoping for the hp to be 1. It will take some tries before it works, but eventually you will get it.
You get thievery as soon as you reach thievery. In Alexandria, go and synthesis Angel Bless. This has the thievery ability. Thievery power is based on the number of successfull steals Zidane has performed. :)

Virus helps alot, but I don't get that until later in the game, so in the beginning I have to rely on running from all the random battles. Boss battles don't give exp, so they are not a problem. There are a few battles that can't be avoided, where I have to use stop and petrify to avoid leveling up.

Eiko and Freya are never at level you get them later on in the game, so it's impossible for them to be a part of a level 1 party

Wrong. Their level is based on the level of the characters you already have with you. The reason why you have never seen Eiko and Freya at level 1, is because you haven't tried keeping everyone at level 1.

Oh I can. It's hard, of course, takes alot of work, but that's what makes this a challenge. Level isn't everything in this game, and on a level 1-playthrough it all comes down to having the best fit equipment and abilities in every situation, and using the right tactics. That's what counts for most in Final Fantasy IX. Level is just a bonus to help you on your way.

got to say a few things...
1. He never did curse or meteor once!!!! why!?
2. How the hell did flare star do so little!?
3. He is normally able to get in 2 turns at a time as well, ozma pretty slow it appears here.
4. you probably set your party up to absorb darkness but he still never performed the move!

1. That's just luck
2. Flare star does damage based on it's target's level. Since my level is 1, it doesn't hurt much.
3. It's true, ozma can act even when its ATB bar isn't full, because if I enter a command between his attacks, ozma's ATB fills up immediately. To prevent this, I enter my commands during the animation of ozma's attacks. This helps slow him down a bit.

ozima is a really lame looking boss hah, i am tryin this one too with the guides on gamefaqs but i hear in pandemonium you cant get past a few fights so you have to lvl up though i was woundering if there was a way to zombify yourself so you cant get xp from them. I am on disk 3 lvl one party it works and it is frustrating as hell people but awesome

Find chocographs in Hot & Cold and get all the pieces. Once you have ocean and all 6 pieces the mist ocean one will unlock. Find it and Hey Presto! A gold chocobo. ;P

Well I found this level one-guide on gamefaqs, and I wanted a challenge and thought this had to be the ultimate one. So I tried out, thought I'd probably give up after a couple of hours, but then when I realized it was really possible to stay level 1, I got really excited about it.

it must have taken longer than 60 hours....60 hours is what it takes for me completing the game. But I ended up in level 70. You level 1? You must have had to restart the game countless times..so more like 1500 hours no? xD

I used about 60 game hours, and yes, of course I had to restart a huge amount of times, so sure I used alot more hours of gaming on that. But far from 1500. After all, training abilities like thievery and dragon's crest is what really takes up time. So let's make it 100... and 100 hours is far less than what i've "wasted" on say...a lot of tv series. Not to mention what a number of people uses on world of warcraft. so...

You got something wrong... lvl 1 doesn't mean no battles at all. it means no WINNING battles at all. There's a huge difference. Battling and escaping from it, does NOT give exp. And you can steal without winning the battle. See?
Limit Glove is learned by eating ONE enemy in a pair of two, and running from the battle before killing the other one.

just a side-tracked question... anyone knows whether its possible to:
1. kill ozma w/ level 1 party
AND
2. collect the excalibur II
personally i think its impossible, considering all the stealing needed and dragon-killing for zidane and freya. my emulator save is at disc 2, madain sari with 7hours into the game. i doubt i can finish in 12hours. :/
P.S.: been following the lvl1 guide on gamefaq.
