I fitted winter tyres in 2010 (Dec) they made driving in the snow very safe. have them on my car now . Jan. 2012 as they give safer grip in temp's under 7*c. I put them on in mid Dec 2011 and will take them off when temp stays above 8*c for more than a week.
I am a retired professional driver, for over 45 years ( member of the IAM ) and would never consider driving in the winter without winter tyres. It's not how fast you can drive, it's how fast you can stop.
If you drive at an appropriate speed, braking is not an issue with all season tyres. Most people would benefit from winter tyres more for grip. However, I see sales of them going through the roof... that almost guarantees a mild winter.
Me, Snow socks worked great for me last winter - I live in Scotlands Central belt. Got me home, driving past hundreds of stranded vehicles on 6th December.
@snaken2 Until recently there wasnt a great deal of use for them. Mild winters with almost no snow saw to that. Infact until the last 2 years we were lucky/unlucky to have any snow at all!

Winter tyres also have better water dispertion and a higher number of grooves (sipes) to 'bite' into snow/ice.
I have a set. They're the dog's doo-dahs
