i have 4 copies of the sweet 2 db and 2 givwe us a wink each one cd and one record all have been in my opinion some of the best investments i have ever made
I came to the USA in 1977. I was 9 years old. Up until then, I had only heard music from my country....Argentina. I found this album in the trash......took it home, put it on the record player, and played it. I thought right then and there....."Man I'm gonna like it here!!" :)
I was 14 when this came out. I hear a little Brian May riffage/chorus now and then and a little bit of the vocal harmonies sometimes sound like Queen, but the band has always had their own thing happenin'. Love the synth against the acoustic string in the intro. And the modulation there with the rhythm changes after the cash register is...um... sweet!
I love Leppard. But I'm sooo sooo sorry. The original version kicks DL's cover epically.
Also I was a Sweet fan way before being a Leppard fan and only then I found out about the cover and came to not really apreciate it. Effin' hail SWEET!
I liked the Sweet, but I think other albums are even better in some aspects. Sweet Funny Adams is cool with the title track and set me free. Desolation boulevard is great to with the singles and pieces like solid gold brass. But also healer (from this album) is not bad at all. Nevertheless Sweet is an underrated band that made some graet music!
oh, i love the cover.. how it's changed over the years... makes for a great band... well... who will be discovering sweet 100 yrs from now with their 'jacking'? (supposively their spines with an neuro-pickup assembly....) hell, we can't even make a space station or get back to the moon and retire the hubble... sigh... give us cyber drugs, NO, the real thing! not that implicated I-pod garbage.
Got this record in the late seventies, traded it with a Purple casette. With a Child in Time live-track with Coverdale I've never heard again. BIG mistake...well, at least sort of a mistake. 'Cos Give Us A Wink was such a great album it almost made it worth it ;o) And yes, you're right, careing: this intro IS one of the coolest ever...
@devtrev holy shit u sure got that right dude.. my parents say that they've never heard of this band before and they have a really good taste in music
In the 60's -70's there were so many good bands, the level you had to be at to 'make it' was way higher than t'day, as a result some charting bands didn't even make the radar and a lot of it had to do with radio station programing Your area/market might not of heard 'The Sweet' etc. (unless they had a number one hit).
Don't forget radio was all that existed back then, no MTV, VH1 etc. Midnight Special (TV show) came on at midnight once on the weekend, everyone was out 'partying'.

oh...listen to Liar by Queen and Hotel California by Eagles...then go back to this track...this song really seems to be inspirated by these two songs :)
djzmrdko. You are onto something. Liar came out on Queen's 1st. album, 1973 and Action came out in 76'. Still a good song. And Sweet had so many great songs. If they had a flaw, it was that they became well known for songs like, Little Willy, which is still a good catchy song, but unfortunately, the average listener didn't dive into their better music. Extremely underrated band.
Good point - they could never shake the Wig Wam Bam bubble gum typecast even as they were moving into some pretty heavy stuff with Desolation Boulevard and Give us a Wink
the black tab on top of the album cover was for pulling out the inner sleeve.
when you did so it changed the 'winking eye' to an 'open eye' through the cut out on the outer cover. when you put the inner sleeve back in the album cover, it would "give you a wink" very SWEET.
i had this song on a 45 !!

You may hear some resemblance of Queen here? Let the truth told. Sweet came out way before Queen. Besides I love Sweet a hell lot more.
