I've always loved Neil Young's outlook on life and he's not a bad singer/song writer. Not to detract from Neil Young, but I like the Johnny Cash version......very good
i only ever been to alberta once and be damned if it wasn't fifty cluckin' below in the day time... talk about brass nuts on a bridge, snappin' old sphincters it was cold
What a great intro. A pure, true, and powerful version of a truly great song. My Barbra Rose in Heaven heard this one. Thank you, Neil and company. Heaven keep you all (forever).
neil i think i have spent all MY money playing YOUR songs over and over again. the most beautiful music i have ever heard. and i can not get enough of it. :)
Ian Tyson, who wrote this song is a real, no foolin' cowboy from the Alberta prairie. In addition to "Four Strong Winds," another of his songs that really evokes the lonesome existence of the cowboy life is "Someday Soon" that Judy Collins had a big hit with from her LP "Who Knows Where The Time Goes." in 1968. Stephen Stills played bass on that cut. It was a crossover hit that showed a lot of us that country could be cool.
I grew up listening to this song played by my brothers 'coz they're # fan of Neil Young! I remember the time when we only had cassette recorder but we played his music all the time...!! Thank you Neil for making great songs... god bless
He grew up on Grosvenor Ave Winnipeg, and that place he talks about at Falcon lake is the small cafe In the town site called the Falcons Nest but there used to be a hotel right on the Hwy entrance that burned down in the early 70s that had a small cafe. My family had a cabin on the south shore from 1968-1999 And we would spend our money on ice cream at the "Nest"
@k3304 Neil's dad Scott Young was a sports writer for The Glode & Mail in Toronto. He would occassionally have guest appearances on Hockey Night In Canada with Ward Cornel, to give his opinion on some of the current issues of the day. Ward Cornel was the predecessor to Ron McClean of today's Hockey Night In Canada.
I worked as a Computer Programmer @ the The Glode & Mail from 1969 to 1975. I had the opportunity to meet Scott on one occasion to review a news archive Search Engine with him
In the intro,Neil speaks of Falcon Lake,it's a provincial park and campground about 40 east of Winipeg,Manitoba along the transcanada highway,I was stranded there for 5 days back in 1976,waiting for auto parts to fix a breakdown. My friend and I were both 17,just as neil was.Spent a lot of time at the same cafe he mentioned (must be,as it is the only one around there) Also played the jukebox there as he did.Not sure if it was the same jukebox or not,as we were 12 years after the time period
@davelw77 I was so fortunate to be at this concert in Nashville.....Neil ,Emie Lou, Neils wife and all the other great musicians....man, I will NEVER forget it!
emersonkid8850 " q "a program on cbc radio poled its listeners as to what other song would be their second choice for our national athem ...and "four strong winds was the overwhelming choice...great canadian song penned by a great canadian songwriter..and sung by a great canadian legend....
This is a great version of a song that Neil covers so well. What was the venue? I recognize several of the folks on stage, but not all. Can you identify them? Thanks for the post.
WOW!! At 1:07, that powerful beginning of rich, concentrated, undiluted, beautiful music is something to behold! Absolutely stunning!! Thank you for posting.

It's a shame today's youth does not have a Neil Young of their own. He is the voice of an entire generation.

Neil did not mention that he himself had a great hit with the song from his album Comes a Time in the Seventies.
