Hey I need advice badly. I'm in 6th grade jazz band and there's one song I cannot play. My band teacher can kick me out if he wanted too. Should I quit? Besides. I'm the only girl that plays an instrument. I'm a alto saxophone. There are five girls but they sing.

@Tigerlilly9901 Take pride in your playing. If your teacher is worth a grain of salt, he would encourage you to stay in the band.

I'm going to assume you've asked your teacher for advice already. If so, my guess is that he would've suggested that you take private lessons.

If you really enjoy playing your instrument and being in band, I strongly suggest you to do band all the way through high school, at the least.

Go to festivals, contests, and take lessons. Have fun and improve!

@sugerray7 It's probably not your equipment. It took me about two years to get consistent, good sound (full range) on my alto sax. By that time, I moved from a student -> intermediate model and began using (3) rico royals (you don't really need a strong/high quality reed then).

Give it time. Learning an instrument is all about dedication, enjoyment, and simply advancing musically.

Try listening classical/jazz if you haven't already. Mastery of an instrument = endless benefits.

@MrIdentify i have been playing tenor sax for three years and the hardest part for me is the actual blowing of the sax. I can finger all the notes but trying to keep a good seal on the mouthpiece and putting enough air into the sax is difficult.

@orange22ist the smaller one is the Alto & the bigger is Tenor

@orange22ist Tenor is on the Right (Bigger w/ curved neck), Alto is on the Left. The fingering is the same, so if you learn one, you can play both. I play both and find the Tenor a bit easier and mellower to play. Alto is "brighter" and "jazzier" to me. But I love 'em both!
