i mean graphics card. 1 fking gtx 470. ALSO. DONT BUY HIGH END GRAPHICS CARDS IF UR ONLY INTO RUNNING A GAME. anything lower is sufficient. i feel so bad now that i bought the 2nd to highest card and i barely use its potential
agreed 99%! very nice video, still truth in 2012 and will be as long as the industry use the same way of doing business!
PS: not 100% truth in different countries, like in Brazil, different rules here, like buying a second video card 1 or 2 years later, they get so much cheaper that it actually worth more them buyng a new one!
Dude this guy is so wrong, if you want to run at the highest resolutions possible, just get more of the same graphics card for higher perfomance. If you get the 7970 NOW it will 100% be future proof for gaming because you can 4x it! Nothing will be able to beat it in the next few years (A single graphics card). And yeah if you want to 4x it you will need A huge case.
@kankerturk123 He isn't wrong. A lot of people don't do upgrading for at least 2-3 years and most build budget PC's. You can build a computer that can play almost every game at max to very high settings with the cost of only 1 Radeon 7970. You can use the 6850 or 6870 and that PC will be the cost of 1 7970. It will be the same way in the future. I say buy smart, but if you really have the money to throw then yeah go high end but the majority of the population can't.
i5-2500k, 2 asus or msi twin frozr iii 6950's in crossfire so you can unlock and overclock them when games get more demanding. Noctua NH-D14, 8gb of 1600 ram such as g skill x series. Case would be 600t and motherboard would be Asus maximus IV Extreme Z along with a 1000 watt power supply and 1tb hdd caviar black because I'm gonna be recording a lot of videos. A ocz 90gb ssd for Boot drive and z68's ssd caching. I'm getting this build in 3 months so by then the components will change.
My old anthlon2x gaming rig is still kicking it, i can still play MWF3 and bf3 on it, sure the settings are on medium but hell it was only $300 4 years ago.

My point is i plan to get myself a new one but the parts in my current one would be a super upgrade for them. so thank you very helpfull info from yourself :)
well i just build a system: haf 922 i7 2600 hyper 612s 8GB ram gtx 560 ti 1TB WD caviar black 750W ocz bronze psu asus P8Z68 LE motherboard 2 dvd drives and that's about it i just wanna play games.. idk about the detail settings, ultra is cool, but medium is fine too and 720p is fine too.. idc but i hope this will keep me going a while.. maybe upgrade gpu few years down the road.. add a hard drive.. get some more ram.. idk i will see :D
Personally, I think this style of video is possible more helpful than those with product reviews or comparisons, as the ideas can be applied to any build now or down the line.
I bought an AM3+ mobo, but I put a Phenom II 975 in it (AM3+ socket is backwards compatible with AM3), good CPU, reasonable price. 2x 8GB DDR3, got room for 2 more sticks. 16 is way more than I need. I'm not much of a gamer, Runescape is really the only game I play. Storage, mobo has 8 SATA ports, and the case can take 7 HDDs. My total build cost was $912.
Thank you linus, i had this mentality of growing my build as time goes. But for now i'm gonna keep it as my basic build and save up for a really awesome one in the future =)
im not buying hard drives i have 7 hdd/ssd spot im buying one 120gb force gt first when im getting close i might get a 240gb maybe in a year ill get a another 240gb if i decide to start recording videos with fraps/ bandicam to me i think if i have a super fast compter i dont want one part slow
@TheCanio Yeah, probably the new 7970s. *snickers* Now don't get me wrong, I like AMD's 'value for the performance' market and the 7k are no exception, but I'll wait until Nvidia makes a challenging line to the 7k and the price drop. Do I need it now? God no, I can play almost any top-end game at minimum 30 FPS usually 40-60 with ultra settings at 1920x1200 on a single 5770 which I have OCed to the performance of a 6850. It's more 'future proof' to get a decent CPU/GPU that can OC well later.
@XionEternum I heard that the 680 is supposed to cockslap the 7970 in the face, so if you like nvidia you can try for that, I just bought a 7970; however, I really like both companies.
@BronzeApples I really don't see that happening. The only difference between the 580 and the 680 by their own tech specs is double the processor cores. That would mean double the performance AT BEST, and given Nvidia's history with driver issues and the fact that recent driver revisions from AMD have put the 7970 at double the 580's performance in some tests such as Unigine, I think they will be deadlocked or the 7970 will still be better. This does not apply to Nvidia-native games though.
this is exactly right if you plan on gaming at top resolutions at max settings future proofing does not exist sure you can buy a good computer that will play for a bit longer but nobody knows what the performance requirements and graphical jumps we will have in games in the next 2-3 years it could go up but 20% it could triple in graphical detail, new technology and techniques for doing things is always improving
@SenoirMeow SATA is just a type of hard drive that determines the speed, this is not something that can be explained very simply, SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, SATA 2 is the most common speed which is up to 3gb/s and then SATA 3 is up to 6gb/s of course i've never seen any HARD drive transfer anything at 6 gigabytes per second not even a SOLID STATE DRIVE which are up to 10 times faster then a standard harddrive go here, enDOTwikipediaDOTorg/wiki/Serial_ATA
My current most recent system. *G Skill 8g(2x4) DDR3 1600Mhz Rip Jaws *OCZ Agility 3 SATA3 120G SSD *Windows 7 Pro *i7 2700k *Cooler Master V6 GT Cooler *Seagate SATA3 2TB Barracuda 64mb Cache *Antec Eleven Hundred Black Gaming Case *3x Antec Tricool 120mm Fans 3 speed *LG Blue Ray HD Combo *Sapphire ATI HD7970 3GB GDDR5 *ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 *Antec HCG 900W 80plus Bronze 135mm Fan *TP-Link Wirless N PCI Adapter *1 year return to base warranty $2,300 AUD Only adding another 7970 in 6 months
this video hasn't change my view of future proofing bc the only way you can get any type of super long lasting computer without having to upgrade would be to build the absolute highest end computer you possible can but for the incredible price tag of around 15k you should have enough money to upgrade whenever you want lol
@TheUndeadSentry Then Ivy Bridge comes out and makes that CPU seem crapola. Still, your board should be more than capable of running the new 1155 Ivy Bridge CPU's when they come out. Shove a 3770K on there (which is apparently going to retail for around $250ish) and you'll be laughing. That's my plan anyway lol.
@TheUndeadSentry GTX600 series is coming out soon, Core i5's are already slow compared to i7s, 1600mhz is gonna be trumped soon, ssds prices are gonna go down, so are hdd's in the 4th quarter of the business, Mobo socket is gonna go away soon with 3rd generation core i3s i5s and i7s.
@TheGenesisfreak and anyways... the only difference between i5 2500k and i7 2600l/2700k is hyperthread, and for what i use my pc for i dont see any difference
@unacomn I'd get as much RAM as you can as soon as possible, DDR2 is just getting more and more expensive these days. And trust me, you'll notice a nice boost in performance with extra RAM if you multi-task a lot.
If its based on parts that are out now and top of the line, then what will last the longest is a mobo with esata, usb3, pic-e 3.0, quad crossfire/quad sli capable. Use quad radeon 7970's. 1500 watt power supply. For cpu, I'd wait for the Ivy Bridge Intel cpu's and whichever the equivilancy is to either the i7 2600k or 990x. 2 3TB Hard drives in Raid 0, with 6TB in backup drives. Run 4 256GB ssd's also in raid 0 with 2TB backup. Buy the three best (or more) monitors. Your set for twoish years.
i "futureproofed" my pc by buying an good looking aluminum case, a good power supply with not to much power because i think that future componets will consumpt less power than today, a good led monitor, and the latest blueray drive. my videocard, cpu, hdd, cooler and my motherboard is all more budget. so that i can upgrade it in about 2 years and will again buy budget componets. btw. upgrading is fun i think ^^
Video cards are really the only part that is not futureproof, but its not hard to buy a new one 2 years down the line and plop it in.
My 4 year old Q6600 still runs all modern games nearly maxed with a 6950 2gb. That and the fact that game requirements are really not advancing as fast as hardware. Anyone with a 2600k and 8gb of ram will be futureproof for at least 4 years with a GPU upgrade later on. My Q6600 gaming rig is proof of that.
@skyw4lka Err, there no such thing as no viruses for any system build. It depend what you surf, DL etc. In looks, it depends on individual taste. If faster, it depends on how you build your PC & OC it after the build. It all boils down to what Linus said in e video. As a reminder, some brands don't last 4ever, look at Ericsson, Nokia, even Apple which has its up and down, Windows as well (as to current situation) etc. I would not bet on a brand at all but more on the system build. :)
my future build would mainly be hmm: i7 3930x, 8 gbs 1866 quad channel of ripjaws z, about 500 gb of sdd (i wish i had the money atm for it tho..) with a seperate boot drive, and probably a single 590
@CoksAZ u r just jealous because you do not have a ps3 also you cant even install Mac on any of these dumb computers you build or have geek squad support how dumb
@skyw4lka lol ps3 is already like 5 years old and it never played any game at max settings and it will never do that ever the hardware was already out of date when it came out
general "futureproofing" is just useing components that are as close to the top end stuff you can get so it lasts longer then the more common components. so its relative to what your using it for as Linus said and what your comparing it to. I like the term price to power"i5 build". but for instance my future proof pc would be i7 3960x with a Asus Rampage mobo,Corseair Dominator low late high mhz ram ,2 xfx 7950 in crossfire,or 590s in sli with a full water loop and equvalent psu, large SSD.
This video could have used more elaboration on why buying a second video card for SLI/Crossfire doesn't make sense. For instance, video card prices don't really go down, they just get discontinued. I have a 5850 right now and back in 2009 told myself that I would buy another one when the performance isn't good enough any more. A quick search on 5850's shows that you can't even buy one anymore. So much for that.
will a FX-4100 be good enough for a future proof of 1an' a half years to 2 years please tell me as i will upgrade the gfx and the ram and so fourth over time but the cpu is something i will not be able ro afford over that period of time
@mylaptopdiednooo i5 2500k or i7 2600k.. I am currently about to order products to build a new PC and trust me.....AMD does not have 1 single CPU that can match those 2 Intels. Not one. No joke, look at the benchmarks. I was going to go with the 1100t BE because the new bulldozers are brutal. But for $20 more, the 2500k DOMINATES and I mean DOMINATES the 1100t, which dominates the bulldozers.
As for GPU, I'm going with the 7970.. it's pricey, but should get at least 2.5 years out of it.
@james3244 i5 2500k is enough since u can overclock with ease and spend the rest 4 a better video card (wouldn't bother since 7970 is enough) or more storage
In my opinion if you want to future proof your PC, get a full tower case, do not skimp on it, and the PSU, ALOT OF PEOPLE skimp on the psu, dont do this if your system only need 850w get a 1000w psu for future graphic cards, if you pc needs 650w get a 850w psu for the future, and this may sound dumb but in my opinion optical drives and 6gps storage drives are somewhat future proof, you can just save those drives and it would be all good
Wow, very good video. Very comprehensive with lots of main points. I hope that I don't need to uprage my computer until 4-6 years later. Because as we all know, upgrading is so damn costly compared to buying a console (PS3 or Xbox 360).
the most future proof pc you can put together will be from the most high end components as they will handle things for a longer period of time, that said, it is much better to buy new stuff when that period of time comes.
well,my "future proof" computer would probably consist of a high core processor,Mainly because they will most likely be making more things that can utilize more cores.Like i bought an FX6100 because it will last for quite some time...And then i would say about a 6870 or 6950 video card now because then you can SLI them for a decent price and be able to run most games at 1920x1080 res at high/ultra settings for awhile too :P
i bought 850w 80+ gold for 145$ even though i only need 600w max and 700w if i do SLI, which i was thinking of doing in a year or two until this video lol.
i commited the 1st mistake by buying an AThlonII x2 and then spending 500U$S on a quad core system haha (i don't regret but.. XD) all i have to do is getting a new VGA (my 9500GT is near to its death haha)
Here is a question, I am running 3 Hard Drives in RAID0 and have been for about 6months now. I am using the onboard RAID controller, and I would like to upgrade my motherboard. If I buy a new motherboard which also has a RAID controller, will it detect the old RAID Array and use that or will I have to start over and backup my data and so on?
my next build i7 2600k asus gtx 580 direct cuii asus p8z68-deluxe/gen3 corsair force 3 240 gb ssd a segate barracuda 2 tb 16gb of kingston hyperx 1600mhz ram
Processor: I5 2500K OC @ 4.5Ghz Mobo: MSi P67A-GD65 (B3) GPU: MSi N560GTX-Ti Hawk in SLI RAM: G.SKILL RipjawsX 1600Mhz 16gb (4gbx4) PSU: Corsair AX850W 80PLUS Gold Chassis: 800D Obs CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 SSD: 120GB Corsair Force GT SATAIII 6gb/s raid o HDD: 2tb WDCB x3 ODD: Samsun SH-b123 Blu-ray Combo Drive ODD2: ASUS 24X DVD Writer SATA DRW-243ST i had this for a while now and i expect it to last me 3 more years from now before i upgrade anything else
well i was choosing between i5 2500k vs i7 2600k, but i never saw any real need for the hyper threading, well i do autocad/2d rendering but i got my bulldozer for that, and i use i5 for pure gaming only so i see no reason for upgrading as an i7 2600k will last me the same time when i bought my i5, since over clocking lessens it's time span and i wouldn't be surprised if it died after 4 years or 5 years, same with an i7 2600k, for me i rather go with what i need for this time rather
rather than go with super future proofing which i know it won't last me longer due to what i do with my pc ^_^ but hey at least my chassis and psu will last me a real while so that is what i call future proofing, well it would last 2-5 build i say depending on what happens on real life event
@anzenxxii no its not!!! just kidding its fine . where are you from coz i am from india and 2700k is available here for over a month in multiple shops
@sunakaffck im from the philippines. as i was inquiring pc shops in my area last december they told me i7-2700k processors would be available by january 2012. but unluckily for me, even though i had reserved 1 i7-2700k a month beforehand, the stupid supplier of our shops from whom i ordered it accidentally sold off every last one to another shop from a different area. i didn't want to wait another month for the next stock so i decided to go for the i7-2600k.
The only time I believe you can actually future proof is when a new socket comes out for CPUs. So lets say socket 1155 just came out, if you at that time buy like one of the fastest CPUs for that socket, it will definitely last you. But if you try to buy one of the best when that socket has been out for over 2 years, it's a waste of money. By the time you buy it, probably another socket will come out and you'll be stock with your CPU until you have no choice but to buy everything new again.

I'm not much of a gamer, Runescape is really the only game I play. Storage, mobo has 8 SATA ports, and the case can take 7 HDDs. My total build cost was $912.

TheCanio 3 weeks ago 60
@TheCanio Yeah, probably the new 7970s. *snickers* Now don't get me wrong, I like AMD's 'value for the performance' market and the 7k are no exception, but I'll wait until Nvidia makes a challenging line to the 7k and the price drop. Do I need it now? God no, I can play almost any top-end game at minimum 30 FPS usually 40-60 with ultra settings at 1920x1200 on a single 5770 which I have OCed to the performance of a 6850. It's more 'future proof' to get a decent CPU/GPU that can OC well later.
XionEternum 2 weeks ago
@XionEternum I heard that the 680 is supposed to cockslap the 7970 in the face, so if you like nvidia you can try for that, I just bought a 7970; however, I really like both companies.
BronzeApples 2 weeks ago
@BronzeApples I really don't see that happening. The only difference between the 580 and the 680 by their own tech specs is double the processor cores. That would mean double the performance AT BEST, and given Nvidia's history with driver issues and the fact that recent driver revisions from AMD have put the 7970 at double the 580's performance in some tests such as Unigine, I think they will be deadlocked or the 7970 will still be better. This does not apply to Nvidia-native games though.
XionEternum 2 weeks ago
@BronzeApples The reason we get GPUs cheap is because of the AMD/Nvidia competition, so buying a card without a rival is dumb.

SenoirMeow 3 weeks ago
@SenoirMeow SATA is just a type of hard drive that determines the speed, this is not something that can be explained very simply, SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, SATA 2 is the most common speed which is up to 3gb/s and then SATA 3 is up to 6gb/s of course i've never seen any HARD drive transfer anything at 6 gigabytes per second not even a SOLID STATE DRIVE which are up to 10 times faster then a standard harddrive go here, enDOTwikipediaDOTorg/wiki/Serial_ATA

My Q6600 gaming rig is proof of that.

skyw4lka 4 weeks ago
@skyw4lka Err, there no such thing as no viruses for any system build. It depend what you surf, DL etc. In looks, it depends on individual taste. If faster, it depends on how you build your PC & OC it after the build. It all boils down to what Linus said in e video. As a reminder, some brands don't last 4ever, look at Ericsson, Nokia, even Apple which has its up and down, Windows as well (as to current situation) etc. I would not bet on a brand at all but more on the system build. :)

general "futureproofing" is just useing components that are as close to the top end stuff you can get so it lasts longer then the more common components. so its relative to what your using it for as Linus said and what your comparing it to.

In my opinion if you want to future proof your PC, get a full tower case, do not skimp on it, and the PSU, ALOT OF PEOPLE skimp on the psu, dont do this if your system only need 850w get a 1000w psu for future graphic cards, if you pc needs 650w get a 850w psu for the future, and this may sound dumb but in my opinion optical drives and 6gps storage drives are somewhat future proof, you can just save those drives and it would be all good

the most future proof pc you can put together will be from the most high end components as they will handle things for a longer period of time, that said, it is much better to buy new stuff when that period of time comes.
henk18652 1 month ago
well,my "future proof" computer would probably consist of a high core processor,Mainly because they will most likely be making more things that can utilize more cores.Like i bought an FX6100 because it will last for quite some time...And then i would say about a 6870 or 6950 video card now because then you can SLI them for a decent price and be able to run most games at 1920x1080 res at high/ultra settings for awhile too :P

well i was choosing between i5 2500k vs i7 2600k, but i never saw any real need for the hyper threading, well i do autocad/2d rendering but i got my bulldozer for that, and i use i5 for pure gaming only so i see no reason for upgrading as an i7 2600k will last me the same time when i bought my i5, since over clocking lessens it's time span and i wouldn't be surprised if it died after 4 years or 5 years, same with an i7 2600k, for me i rather go with what i need for this time rather
