  • Dreadful song then, even more dreadful now.

Everyone join in with the chorus.....2,3,4 UNDERPANTS!!!!!!!

  • check out biba nova third sex from the sun-amazing

  • I actually listened to John Fox's solo stuff before I listened to his songs from early Ultravox. Was very surprising. He sings punk really well. lol.

  • when i heard this recently it blew my mind - i wasn't even born when this came out .This rocks

  • great song and video. I love this album (In the Garden).

  • @OwnedOver9000 - Dennis?

  • listen to that drum beat ! weeellll ahead of its time, nowa days rappers use that beat.

  • song sounds nice but quality sucks ;//

  • Underpants

  • John Foxx Loved Polymoog Synthesizers in the late 70's... Great composition, eerie, lovely sound... In addition to a Polymoog 203a synth I believe he also recorded this with an Arp Odyssey + 70s analog effects.

  • My elder brother used to take the pee out of this by singing underpants every time i played it and then saying to me they won't be playing your (MONG) music in twenty or thirty years time unlike his soul & R&B.

Well bruv just shows what you know ! Thumbs up for the 80's synth

  • John Foxx was way ahead of his time, he even had the harcut of the 90's, sort of.

  • sounds so much like gary numan

  • The synth is still amazing, very well produced by Gareth Jones

  • we always sung underpants...

  • great song, where have all the good guys gone!!

  • first time this song gave me cool vibes! Good Song!

  • To the twat who said "underpants" - I used to hear that when I was 13 from the twats at school & in reply to you I say "Shitty on the backside, crusty on the front, stains of twat lard from my girlfriends c**t!" I met John Foxx in Coventry & he signed my records, not only have I loved his innovative & futuristic take on things but he was also a charming BASTARD!! Ultravox! rule!

  • @doomhunter1998 I have a strange PS for your beautiful enthusiasm for JF, which I totally share. Louis Gordon commented to me on Myspace that John was great 'BUT KEEPS SINGING ABOUT HIS UNDERKNACKERS..." You cannot trust anyone. Foxx is a genius. Good writer and artist too.

  • listen to atomone - stahlbeton he raps on a remixed version of this track

  • Good to See John Foxx music still attracts the same pretentious followers that it always did

  • I think that this epitomises the decay of the 1960's dream in the 70's. Britain was in a terminal decline and optimism that somehow, concrete flyovers and motorways along with towerblocks would 'do' led to shifts in perception that these concepts would be reviled and hated. This simply confirmed the enormous divide between those with influence and those who were supposed to accept this 'new order'. This epitomised the alienation, banality and dysfunction that JGB predicted and did occur.

  • @folkinhell and underpants

  • Great.

  • so cool

  • This track perfectly captures urban dereliction in Britain during the 1970s

    and early 80s.

  • click click drone

  • UNDERPANTS!!

  • what the fuck I am dutch we have the freedom so fuxk the underpants we are just for underpass

  • hardcore 80s electonica - total class

  • new wave forever!

  • takes me back but we did sing underpants

  • "world war something" !! i can see my breath

  • UNDERPANTS!!!

  • Sublime genius, godhead of pop electronica 1/3 of a century (or more) ahead of his time- such sweet irony this is one of the few musics that wake me up on long drives, semtex in your septum, hydrazine in your hippocampus, Plastique in your pons: a nexxus of neurotransmitters

  • Shotme right where I live...you wonderful person you

  • xDD

  • Youtube coming up trumps yet again! I remember this song when it first came out and i don't think i'd heard it again until a few months ago thanx to Y/T! I love it!

  • UP YOUR ASS!

(well it makes a change from underpants)

  • I love this song!

  • It seems that someone has deleted my original UNDERPANTS comment. It was the highest rated comment or maybe it's in another upload of this video that I missed. UNDERPANTS!

  • YouTube is fast becoming another site where it is in fear of going up its own arse with people being far too serious.

Lighten up guys, its all entertainment!!

  • @AngelArtists

Existence is All that Is's entertainment, edutainment and interpertainment.

  • click.click

  • Shit!! I was gonna say UNDERPANTS after just hearing it on BBC 4 Synth Britannia. But I saw someone beat me to it ILMAO. At least I'm not the only one who noticed LoL

  • Future sailors

    Electronic castaway

    Digital stowaway

    Cyborg sea-dog,

  • Underpants!!!

  • One of the most underated singer's and songwriter's of the last 30 odd years!

  • @milbury55 YES!

  • underpants!!!

  • Ahh Mr Foxx.....brillian whirling synth music from the grand master of the electronic age. Priceless stuff......

  • This is awesome.

  • I got the weirest craving for this song today

  • mmm not sure if i like this, a bit too obvious, but i suppose at the time it wasn't; and who knows maybe i'll regret this comment one day

  • lol classic > swelland hehe now after yrs of that song i gonna thinkof underpants ek

  • Dennis (John Foxx) was one of my lecturers when I was at university! He's an awesome guy!

  • @OwnedOver9000 From his music. I know what you say. I'd love to chat with Him! His MySpace is inaccesable! I've tried so many ways!!!!!!!

  • @OwnedOver9000 Whooaahh!! I imagine many teacher crushes in that scenario!

  • Unvergesslich...... Danke pc69

  • (Aargh) I know it's sense now!! WHOOPS sorry put 2 exclamation marks, WHOOPS I wrote all in capitals! Seriously, cant people get by videos WITHOUT commenting on their spelling!?

  • amazing track, i'm surprised that it's not been hawk'd by some scummy eurotrash dj remix merchant

  • And do I actually care how I spell senSe? No!

  • Epic!

  • Meh, song makes no sence. Meh, oh well.

  • The song is about the world after World War Three (i.e. after a nuclear war).

  • ultravox with jon foxx were the first band i ever saw at wakefield trinity hall oct 78 cost a pound i was still at school at my art teacher took us he is sadly no longer alive but was cool as fuck n a good dummer too mr foy was the mans name memories eh iv seen many bands since but this gig set me off on the way in fact iv still got the ticket

  • The start of the song makes me cream man ! :L

  • I love this song, but it sounds a bit flat and slow on this video...

  • You know I might be totally wrong because I live faaaar from England but the bridge at 1:26 reminds me of the one in Depeche Mode's Everything counts' video. Could this be a homage? I mean DM members loved John Foxx at least that's what I've been hearing. It would be really cool if I were right. Even the camera angle is the same.

  • You need to get the chronology right! This solo track and his earlier work as the original, more relevant, front man of Ultravox was a precursor to the work of Depeche Mode. Gary Numan has also acknowledged his significant influence at the start of his own career.

  • @jonesfeld I think you misunderstood. I wanted to say that he DM members liked his music, I know he started much earlier . I would never say he ripped off anybody. :)

  • hes was my sound teacher in ealing lol but he left last year

  • Yes, you are right, but all credit to Mr. Foxx, he doesn't appear bitter, he spoke quite highly of Gary Numan on Beeb 4's recent Synth Brittania documentary...

  • I thought he said "underpants"

  • i don't know why i love this song so damn much. i can't even grasp the meaning of it. XD i just love it.

  • click-click-drone

    fantastic tune

    thanx for posting it

  • Such an awesome tune. Possibly the ultimate futurist track ever.

  • I love this song :D I listen to it every day! ;) I blame my dad. He got me into all the old shiz

  • my little nephew used to sing Underpants! He's 31 now!

    boy do I feel old.

    Still a cool song.

  • UnDeRpAntS !!

  • Bought this album as soon as it originally came out! Thought this was the best track, closely followed by Touch and Go, and Lieutenant 030. Thanks for bringing back loads of memories!

  • Quel horreur cette merde !

    Vraiment n' importe quoi !

Comment on peut écouter ce genre de diarrhé ????

  • well advanced sound for its time, and eerie!

  • *BANG* UNDERPASS!

  • UNDERPANTS , Radio Tees

in Cleveland ripped the piss out of this track every time they played it . KLING KLANG would have been proud of this track

  • what a fantastic bit of synth...only reached no 31 in the charts in 1980...but was ahead of its time...brilliant

  • Underpants!

  • Underpants. That's really funny. Why didn't I think of that? He's great though, isn't he?

  • Yeah, he's okay. Not a favourite, but the first couple of Ultravox! LPs are good, even if not generally accepted amongst the punk community...

  • I didn't know John Foxx ever pretended to be punk. He was always on the cutting edge of synth-pop as far as I knew. I saw Ultravox in San Francisco with Foxx in 1979: incredible show. Then I saw Ultravox with Midge Ure in 1980: bullocks!

  • The first 2 Ultravox! LPs are great punk records! And all the early singles. 'Young Savage' is not synth-pop!

  • Right. The first Ultravox! album was rip-roaring punk with synth and violin. The more poppish sound came later.

  • oi.oi, watch it pal midge era vox was the best

  • Bullocks! (Slap with my glove.) John Foxx was the best. Midge Ure was a big sell-out. (Slap slap with glove.)

  • omg WHAT A SOUND

  • Man- Metamatic was a TOP album!

  • pure GENIUS!!!

  • Wunderbarrrrrrr *-*!

  • I'm going to see him at Bath Uni. in December - can't wait!!

  • How fantastic is this song!! Reminds me of great times in 1980.

  • Sounds like Underpants. lol

  • New Wave Rulez!!!!!

    Forever!!

  • AMAZING!!! John ruless..check his new work with another genius Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)

  • do i hear a polymoog? i thinks i do

  • 1.23 yep, looks like a 203a, seems to be working as well, wtf?!

  • No, I believe most of this track was written on an Arp Odyssey.......

  • @GNeuman ...you´re right it was an ARP Odyssey !! There´s a really cool interview with John in Future Music where he tells ...cheers, Steve

  • Sorry, you are right, there is a flash of a Polymoog @ 1:23, just not sure if a Poly really features in this song. Prob not as its rare to find a 203A working for more than 10 minutes, even in 1980......

  • I dunno, he might have got lucky. that lead riff, Its a very polymoogish sort of sound, (obv got extras added to it).

  • Hmmmmmmm, are you thinking "Vox Humana'?"

I just remember speaking to a Numan/Foxx fan and accomplished sound engineer who also knew John Foxx personally (as they were both originally from Chorley) and he stated that most of Metamatic was recorded just using and Arp Odyssey........

  • no so much vox humana, just its sound, im not to familiar with the arp odyssey as i spend my time tinkering wit my old 203a. i can get close to that sound wit my 203 but i havnt got vox humana, just modify my strings preset

  • Wow, don't know whether to commend you or commiserate with you, LOL.....

Here you go, here's the Wiki link to Metamatic, no mention of a Polymoog ;-)

  • @GNeuman Are you still working, Gary? This is Kay Russell, who co-wrote "Twilight Cafe", a minor hit in 1981.

  • @TheOpenmind7..Sorry, I'm not Mr. Numan. :-))

  • What a tragedy that John never got the recognition he deserved, a very talented man and a great song - still sounds scary and as someone else said, it would make an awesome trance track

  • UNDERPANTS!!!

  • great song

  • I know a friend who has sex to this song

  • wow cool, I was totally wondering if you did, thanks for telling me.

  • good music

  • bought the 45 back in the day!

  • I love this song and the entire Metamatic album...

  • Sorry, I do love this track and the album that it came from, Metamatic, is awesome but I can't help to hear Underpants evertime....

  • Underpants!!

  • here 's the guy who was in ultravox before

midge ure jolned the band.. sounds very ultravox..........

  • Now THERE'S a synth riff that would work well as a trance track!

  • yeah,it would 4 sure, dont no why people gave u the thumbs down

  • brill track cant stop listening to it

  • Synth Heaven. LOL .

  • wonderful

  • great song !

  • isnt this like the mighty boosh's Electro Boy??

  • E X C E L L E N T

  • Brilliant - brings back memories!!!

  • great !

  • Somehow just discovered this artist/song...GREAT stuff here! Funny I don't recall ever hearing this when I was growing up in the early eighties. I liked Tubeway Army/Gary Numan and was big into the "alternative music scene" listening to punk/hardcore/new wave/synth pop...goes to show that there are still gems out there to be discovered.

  • Dont recal ! Where you sleeping back then :) Check : Cabaret voltaire - nag nag nag / DAF - Der mussolini / Dave ball - in strikt tempo. Let me know what you think ?

    Cheers

  • @ YoungGunzzz007 Name 1 thing that's good that has come from the Czech Republic. Hmmmm...... NOTHING. You even used English in your user name HA HA HA.

  • Old memories from this song...I was a spoiled rotten full-of-myself avant-garde artiste college kid..guess what?... I miss college! But what a great song!
