  • How to overcome ground-effect: Cut the throttle to idle and give slight nose up. He could have put it down before the middle of the runway. However, after the mid-point, add full throttle and bring up the gear for a go-round and try it all again. That sure beats shoveling sand out of your britches.

  • Hey, I know the guy flying this plane...I've seen him working the till at my local Pizza Hut...must be a new career direction for him. Poor bugger though... I do feel bad for him. Wouldn't it piss you off to have your overrun on youtube? Hope I never have a day that bad while I'm flying.

  • Idiot. Or smart guy having a bad brain day. GO AROUND! OBVIOUSLY too to hot over the fence and way too much float. Probly due to the steep approach angle (steep hill on final?) Might be better to land downwind on 20 with a flatter approach over the water and hit the numbers. +10-20 kts would still allow plenty of room to stop.

  • I wouldn't say idiot, but certainly an exhibition of poor airmanships. Approach is way hot. Seems like an important place to use a slip.

  • Before you go calling him an idiot.. Correct me if I am wrong but he could have been running low on fuel or had some kind of failure. Respect for others, I am sure you would not want some guy on youtube calling you an idiot for something you know you did wrong or any other reasons that could have applied.

  • I wouldn't call him an idiot. Maybe an anxious person who wanted finish the flight quickly. Anyway, I think the first mistake was an overspeed during the dive. He couldn't even try to flare the plane a bit.

    IMO go around should have been the decision in the moment he didn't see the aiming point anymore and hadn't touched down yet.

  • I think that approach was not "fully happy", it seems to be so faster, but runway was by conditions very difficult, a a novel pilot I think once the pilot passes the take off point, he would have to give fully power and abort this landing, to try it again, buy anyway was an idiot...

  • You really can't say "idiot"... Someone who has put so many hours into flying and just this airport can be a disaster. It is a difficult approach and I agree he should have gone around but no way he is an idiot. Respect for all fellow pilots

  • @PilotCJensen Touching down before the first 30% of runway...not the last 30%. Only an idiot confuses that. Any student pilot would have said "oh crap" halfway down the runway and would have done a go-around.

I certainly would agree with TNCMAviator in describing the behavior, if not the person, as foolish, given his extremely late touchdown point on Rwy 10. I understand the difficulties of TFFJ but the aviation principles hold. It was foolish not to go-around.

  • Nevermind that regardless of what type of pilot you are, one universal truth for piloting aircraft is that X feet down the runway you won't have enough left to stop safely and it's better to go around instead of risking it.

  • Whether somebody calling this pilot foolish can or can't is utterly irrelevant - he was trying to land in spite of running out of usable runway space - by that point most others would have tried a go around. UNLESS there was good reason, like running out of fuel, it shouldn't have ended this way.

  • halfway down that runway if his rear wheels didn't touch down he oughta open that throttle wide and go around, hes got plenty of lift under him to do it.... must've needed to pee or waited too long up there and had to declare a fuel emergency.

  • TFFJ airport... No go around there and must have a special training before can give permission to land there in future... :)

  • @ItsMinecraftify There is a possibility for a go around at this airport, in fact there is always a possibility for a go around unless there is a huge ass mountain on the other side of the runway (and yes, there are airport which have) but here, you can do a go around. And for this airport, you must in fact do a special training to operate to or from this airport.

  • happens to my too. my instructor made pick up the airplane back in the air just to teach me a lesson. if you think you can not make or you going too fast or nose diving just pull up and go around even if you had to do many times.

  • You guys don't know the moral of this crash, and where the video came from. First of all, this ISN'T his video. He has no idea of what he's talking about. The pilot was low on fuel and going around wasn't an option. Going to high was pilot error. He had not other choice.

  • @trypwned regardless of fuel problems, he was approaching too fast and he touched down pass half of the runway. it tells if he was a good pilot or not. if i was in the same situation i would be more careful since there is only one chance for me to land and no go around option. honestly the way the runway looks does not help too

  • A go around should have been executed given the high/fast approach resulting in a post mid field touchdown point. The only exception to a go around would be if the plane was having some mechanical failure such as one engine out thus potentially making a go around more risky than a runway run off. If the plane was fully operational, a go around would have beent the appropriate choice. I hope all were OK

  • @TNCMAviator1013 I submit to you that you know nothing of the circumstances of this landing and as such are in no position to label the pilot an "idiot". Leaving aside for the moment that the more subtle signs on display here indicate to even a seasoned amateur what ACTUALLY happened on this landing renders a "go around" (as you put it) an irrelevance, even a beginner would at least consider elevator failure before leaking the knee-jerk bile and diarrhea cocktail that you have just done.

    at moment of overflight do you hear engine sound, ? right no..

    what could be cause? no fuel or complete engine fail....

    he decends he sees hes too fast, no fuel, no engine, do have time for a turnaround from other side?

    or will you risk a 100pro too fast landing(+50mphs), with maybe ditch after runway into water..

    water no trees/buildings....

    what will you do?? and watch wind direction..

  • this pilot might be a good pilot, but one decision means everything and going around is an important one, perhaps a new pilot taking friends or an experienced pilot thats got complacent. fight should always be respected because nothing else is as unforgiving. i hope they were all ok

    i am getting my pilots license and my instructor says the most important thing is to no when to go around... you might get laughed at a bit but it is better then what happened here. he should have known better especially if hes been flying long enough to get his twin engine/complex rating.

  • @7474b no I would definitely say he's an idiot. That runway is one of the shortest in the world, and if he wasn't on the ground by the halfway point he should have gone around.

  • Guy was a touch too high, a touch too fast, ground effect fought him and he fought her down too late. There are pictures on the web of planes nearly clipping cars here, like one of a Cessna Caravan missing a Mini Cooper by inches. A simple case of "Get-Home-itis".
