I have this laptop as well- I like that it gets the job done, but battery life is an issue. Also, very slow boot up, I hardly ever use it now that I picked up a MacBook ( and I'm no apple nut)

I have this same exact laptop, and it heats up super fast, and super hot, the battery life also runs low, and it sometimes shuts down by itself, I really don't like it that match. /:

i think dell had some serious worries after they released this computer. yes optical drives are dated but what harm is there to include one anyway.the studi 1458 has an optical drive as well as media card reader. its a tad thicker and heavier but a much better comouter now that it has the intel core i processors.

I just picked up one off dell outlet for 500 plus tax, free shipping. With the 1600x900 resolution. its going to be a dual booting system hopefully, windows and mac.

@roossoner51 Definitely get one with dedicated graphics if you are doing a lot of 3D graphics.

Macbook Pro's are thinner and they have an optical drive. Also it has a longer battery life. Macs rule!!

@LocoYoFla on the website the 14z comes standard with a 1.3 ghz processor. the macbook pro is standard with 2.26ghz processor. you cant get this laptop even close to 2.26ghz. much slower than the pro. but i guess its just a personal opinioin though

lol, you could get two of the base model for the price of one baseline 13 inch MBP, or one of these with fully upgraded specs and a 3 year warrenty.

studio 14z does have a nvidia 9400m, the latter, the inspriron 14, doesn't but rather uses intel's intergrated GPU.

i think this review is abit wrong, although it is well elaborated,

he said 8 cell battery gives 5 hours that beat all its rivals--acer timeline and mac beat it hands down with 8 hours.

he said that it is the only laptop to use NVIDIA platform--manylaptops uses that platform too...

do more research before doing reviews

this computers great. make sure u get a different color besides black, the black color that comes free is glossy and is a big fingerprint magnet. the other colors have a more rubbery feel and dont attract fingerprints

I can go without an optical drive, but not having a Memory Card reader built-in is where I get turned away.

You have the option when customizing it to get a card reader that fits in the expresscard slot.

How can you even compare a computer and an Apple. their on different fields, someone who wants to buy a computer rarely ever doubts whether to buy an Apple or not. This is due in large part because of the operating system.

i disagree, As of Alienware is one of the Top Gaming/Fastest pc out there...Faster than a mac..

Alienware has unique Designs if you have seen them.

I never said or implied that apple's are better. What i meant to say is that you should not place a laptop and a macbook on the same field since they are practically not competing. There is a big barrier between them... which is the OS.

And not everyone appreciates that barrier. I don't care for OS X -- would sooner run either Windows 7 or Fedora Core / Ubuntu.

Apple laptops -- they ARE laptops -- have a wonderful design to them, but I can take or leave Apple's OS.

no one uses optical disc anymore. we download or use usb everything. optical drive a slow, takes up space and weight, and eats up battery life just to spin the disc.
