I saw this for the first time live in HD and was very curious about how this event was going to be portrayed on stage. You definiely need to do your homework-historywise, before watching it. The soprano that played Madam Mao hit high notes that gave me chills and Kathleen Kim was superb. They all were. Of course there were some scenes I was totally unaware of, that I did not agree and were quite embarassing to watch with my 13-year old daughter who had tagged along that time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Live in HD performance. Visually at least, it is better than sitting in the audience of an actual opera house. The behind-the-scenes parts were interesting as well. But I could have done without the Met Opera presenter guy we were forced to watch. Who was that?
What a magnificent HD simulcast we had today. I saw this opera when it opened in DC in the 80s, and listened to it many times since, but seeing it with the subtitles was a revelation.
Hot damn is this opera terrible

He seems to be more convincing as Nixon 20 years older.

What is the point of having closeups so extreme that you can see the seams of the poorly-attached wig @1:18?

@munkyb Yeah, and I could be wrong, but I'm not convinced that's a real plane either...

@Long23 Well, the plane would look less fake it the cameras would just sit still and stop zooming around it.

@munkyb This clip is from the dress rehearsal. They released this video before the opera opened at the Met.
