I always like it when sword fights believably degenerate into brawls, rather than two perfectly poised gentlemen going "ting-ting" with their swords, or pirates performing ridiculous stunts that have a one in a million chance of working. These two guys really do look like their trying to kill each other, and all kudos to Viggo for continuing despite the pain he must have been in, although, as the knife fight in Eastern Promises shows, he is willing to REALLY take a beating to make a fight work.

this fight is awesome already, but the behind-the-scenes reveals it's more awesome than you think:

due to make-up messing up eyesight, the headbutt was REAL, along with the punches, so Viggo really was knocked senseless, and grunted in real pain

the knife throw was supposed to miss, but when it didn't, Viggo deflected it, while STILL knocked half-senseless. no cgi or anything

so in other words, other than stabbing or cutting off limbs/heads, this fight was entirely real, amping the awesome

orcs and uruk hai have absolutley no skill. I'm not exaggerating.....they actually suck so bad...they lose just about every one on one battle they are in. They always die..... so easily. this is about the longest fight between an orc and a man.

@Bribickhed6 I dont think the orks are supposed be skilled, they more make up for it with terrifying fanaticism and numbers. And Lurtz holds his own pretty damn well here considering he's fighting the designated swordsman character of the trilogy.

@VictumRoManius Yes, but he's not mixing a human and an elf. And certainly not an elf with a goblin. It's the combination of an orc, which was an elf, and a human, spliced together in his experiments.

Seriously, how can the viewer of the movie take the Uruk-hai seriously as a fighting force when they outnumber Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Boromir by a significant number but the Fellowship kicks their arse? I tried to rationalize it by thinking they were created with great strength but not trained fighters....still, by the Two Towers Gimli regards them as a greater threat than Orcs, yet the trio dominated them and it took being extremely outnumbered to beat Boromir

@bwashinski yeah i thought about it for a long time and figured this: the uruk-hais have only just been created, they're like newborns. how developed can their brains really be? they have no experience, just the urge to kill. also, we must remember that the fellowship is the best of the best. Aragorn's a Ranger, and heir of Numenor, and he's 87 so super experienced, Legolas is an elf, so, same thing, and super heightened senses. Boromir is supposed to be an amazing warrior, daddy's pride.

@bwashinski Gimli descends from many powerful dwarves, and so has inherited all that dwarf fiery spirit. The hobbits are just lucky if you ask me, or unlucky depending on how you put it... Gandalf is Gandalf. Nuff said. So basically, they're all supposed to be incredible warriors, the best of their kind. And let's give the Uruks some credit, they kill a shit ton of men. Most importantly, the Fellowship has something to fight for and protect, whereas the Uruks are just following orders. so yeah!
