any subaru would mostly like perform the same as the Q7, as Audi and Subaru use the same sort of awd systems and anti slip logic. The reason the Acura beat the audi was that this test simulates a rare situation where only the wheels on side have traction. Audi designs there systems to send torque to all 4 wheels, acura's torque vectoring system is designed to send all the torque to the wheel on an axle that opposes the wheel with the least amount of resitances. Thats why it does better here....
@rangerover06sc This a rare situation where only one side of the car has traction, which makes it easy for the acura to distrabute the torque to where it was needed most, instead of sending about half of it to the wheels with no traction like audi's system. In the majority of real off road situations, what you want is a system that will divide the torque evenly between all 4 wheels.
This test is not faked, its a company displaying one of the few off road conditions the acura is better.
Haha this seems staged. When the Lexus and the audi tried going up. the driver kept gunning it like a bo-tard, but the Acura they accelerated slowly and consistently.
@blane237 yea absolutely the audi looked like the driver gave up near the top and they always are super jerky driving ----- I dont think ive ever seen one of these tests that was not 300% phoney
Acura's traction control probably learned there is no grip on left, then proceed sending power to the right, and kept some power to left side so it kept up. The other 2 probably didn't have capability to send power to left or right side of car, just front and back.
The only reason why the Acura made it up was because everyone was too wimpy to step on the pedal. If you notice, the cars just stand still when the tires aren't moving. Although it does slip a bit, it seems the person just stopped revving when the needle hit 6000 RPM. The Acura however just kept chugging on even though the car did not seem to be moving, and then the other wheels gained traction, pushing it up the slope.
Ok I owned a 2001 and 2005 MDX there is no way that its better both of mine blew up everything with less than 100km or 60k miles I hate all that crap! It made it up because it is lighter and the tires are better maybe even ice tires?? I have put 600,000kms on my Isuzu and its still going but the Acura Mdx both in the dump! On top of that Acura stole Bmw's bosch traction system STAY AWAY FROM MDX
Aww sore losers guess its time for people to understand more about the Acura's AWD-SH System then you would understand why it made up the hill and the others didn't try looking it up on SH-AWD Wikipedia thing the others can learn from this.
@ryns99 Nissan's Attessa AWD in G's, FX, EX, M wouldn't help here. The Attessa AWD can add 5% to 20% of front power during corning G's, 30% heavy acceleration or lose of rear wheel grip. Attessa Snow mode Locks the 4wd 50/50 front/rear. But the Attessa system lacks the Active Rear side to side Power distribution which key here.
Actually this test is a very good test showing the cars traction in icy conditions, all it comes down to is the diff's, although if you really needed to you could always get locking diff's put on and your car would make it up that hill in this test no matter what.
this is such a fair test... when will people take the results for what they are? tires, conditions, acceleration, all a constant in this comparison. Acura handled better. doesnt mean its the best vehicle on the market but it did handle better.
I said it in a video where a bmw x3 wins against an audi q5 and i'll say it again: THERE IS NO BETTER 4-WHEEL DRIVE THEN AUDI'S QUATTRO... in every test of motor magazines is quattro the best drive.... and no brand, is it bmw, toyota or any other is better then the quattro drive... it's fact... and MY oppinion... (sorry for my bad english, i'm from germany ;D)
@P4ddYofficial you should watch a vid called Audi vs. BMW vs. Mercedes vs. Subaru part 1 AND also check out subaru vs. audi ice. there they pin a sti against a tt... its obvious to see whos got who. audi did have the best.... but practically, subaru has it now a days. dont kid yourself tho, i have an s4 and an outback :)
Looking at this video, I'll have to say unfair advantage was given to the acura. This video was for one done by Temple of Vtec, a honda/acura enthusiast group. Two, the audi driver stopped on the way up the hill and let it slide back down....consistent but mid range power all the way up and it would've made it...
@greata7x all the tires are the same. when you have the reputation to pin 4 60000 dollar vehicles(rougly) against eachother on a professional test ground like this, you have the sensibility to keep the controlled variable in control. this case being the tires.
At first, I was like Quattro all the way, until I saw the Acura and realized how poorly compared these cars were. Either way, the Lexus would lose because it has a FWD based AWD. It's usually 100% FWD until either put in low gear or snow mode. When it detects slip, it changes to 60/40 I believe. Which still isn't great. The Subaru Forester would eat this test up though.
Ok first of all this is on Acura's channel, and second Acura turned off the traction aids for the Lexus and Audi, but the Audi still would have made it easily if the driver didn't let it slide down the hill.
@DannyBoii87 yes and no, by grip i would presume you mean traction, and traction can be defined as the maximum applied force within given circumstances. traction comes equally from the composition of the tires, the composition of the road surface, and the pull of gravity (usually 9.8m/s2). until the traction control kicks in "grip" would be defined as F=Us*mg. but once traction kicks in you have a mixture of that and F=Uk*mg divided amongst the four wheels
anyone who says this is a 'lame test' must not have been watching the same video i just watched, because i saw 2 SUVs fail to get up a 20% grade hill, while the acura made it up the 30% grade with ease. people, put your biased egos aside and accept the point that the video proved - Acura's SH-AWD system is the best out there. Honda/Acura is all about superior technology and reliability in car's less expensive than the competition.
@Amund7 Nothing, because the Q5 has no front or rear diff locks a s far as I know. But my comment was a response to another one who was referring to the center diff. ;)
This track is called the Automotive Enviro Testing Center in MI. It is not owned by Honda but it is their track of preference. SH-AWD is still on its infancy, I'm hoping it will reflect on Honda's legendary title of reliability.
Must have been an Acura test track. All manufacturers have test tracks and they are the ones who always win on their own tracks because they are setup in such a manner. Any one of those vehicles could have went up that hill if the driver knew how to properly operate a vehicle in snow and ice.
Pretty sur they used ultra high extra superb summer performance tire on all except acura... this is totally stupid test when the cars dont have the same tire grip.
How would the Audi win this anyway? It weighs more than the Lexus and Acura. Plus the Q7 kept on sliding back. Lexus went up and did half of the ramp. Acura has the best system as you can tell by the way it gripped.
So on the 20% ramp, the audi stops and slides backwards with all four wheels locked because there is ice on the right side as well. But the Acura doesn't do this ramp, they do another ramp that is clear of ice... this is a bogus video
why did the audi stop 1/2 way up the hill instead of giving it the gas like the acura did. test like this are meaningless anyway unless all the cars have the same set of tires
lol. Acura AWD system beat Audi AWD system? that video really make me laugh. everybody know Audi has #1 AWD system in the world. in the past 4 years...plz do the research
LOL. The Range Rover system has a massive problem though. It hardly ever works.
Toyota Land Cruiser LC200/Prado have Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) which has proven be more reliable and a much better off-roading system than that in the Land/Range Rovers.
NO. The #1AWD System on planet earth is Nissan's ATTESA-ETS system.
A reviewer said that the 2009 Infiniti G37's ATTESA-ETS had more sportiness and faster reaction time than competing AWD systems such as Audi's quattro, BMW's xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz's 4MATIC. (wikipedia)
This test is worthless. If you have a road with an incline and you have freezing rain or ice then more likely that the whole road will be slippery not just a patch on the left side. FAIL.
funny how some fans always come to their own conclusions...on a perfectly clean sheet of ice, the tires make no difference except if using spiked ones. its totally normal for the acura's SH-AWD to win, since its differentials can send torque left or right, where the torsen of the audi for example is pretty much useless if 1 wheel has zero grip. the others are based on their traction control to brake wheels, where acura's system just sends the torque to the proper wheel
@dimos47ki7 not a fan of Acura, since it is a test that any car with 3 locked diffs would easily pass (G-class for example) or even with just center and rear lock diffs (most of the "more heavy duty" models)
awd system always wins :) atc and quattro are simple system. only easy wheel has traction on these systems. but in awd, 4 wheels have traction at the same time.. it works like dif. lock :)
Fuck all those "super-extra-shitty-blahblahblah AWD". Any simple car, with simple locker (front or rear + centrer) would do that. And that's why I don't trust all this computer-controlled shit.
all this test is really doing is testing how good the lsd is only one side of the car is spinning on the ice the drive will always find the easy way out and spin the wheel with the less grip a 2wd car with a locked diff could do this test
@SoundMan1985 You are right :D :D Sorry! I want to say Acura :D I have a 1986 Audi 100 Quattro and when I lock the differentials it can climb harder uphill with ice on it. Sorry for my terrible english :D
acuras just a more expensive honda try a mitsubishi outlander or vw touareg the mitsubishi has the worlds most advance awd system and the touareg has locking front and rear diffs it would eat the acura
This was shit, why not using the DRY road ass hole?

Quite a dismal performance by the so called ubermaster of the winter Audi... it rolls back on the footbrake...
Ycondaman 1 month ago
They should have used winter tyres for this test.

Unless the drivers are not engaging differential locks or something, then these AWD systems are really utter crap.

@marobadus You mean Honda? Toyota = Lexus.

You can have the best all wheel drive system on the planet if your tires are not suited for the task, it doesn't mean anything.

tires would make a big difference. this test seemed artificial. like it wanted acura to win

@golfmaniac007 Not when it comes to ice.... Unless you have stubbed or chains.

Fuck all those "super-extra-shitty-blahblahblah AWD". Any simple car, with simple locker (front or rear + centrer) would do that. And that's why I don't trust all this computer-controlled shit.

@TheVallentuna1 nope, lesson of the day is make sure your traction control is on when driving up an ice covered hill
devilsfan964 1 month ago
all this test is really doing is testing how good the lsd is only one side of the car is spinning on the ice the drive will always find the easy way out and spin the wheel with the less grip a 2wd car with a locked diff could do this test

Wheres BMW, Land Rover, and Mercedes? With out them I call bs. As it is, I don't trust videos or tests that are out to prove something.
Give them over to independent people and get inspections to show that the vehicles were not tampered with, then I'll be more accepting of the results.

@artjunkiecreations I believe they're only testing AWD based on FWD platforms.....
