This is not Mengsk's doing. A dictatorship is much more confusing than that. There are one group of people running the news, another doing the broadcasts, a third responsible for censorship, and all three report to a superior, that also has his bosses. And of course, they are all afraid of each other. Neither of them want to make any mistakes, because if someone is displeased with the end product, there's no telling who will lose their job, and this is what they make in the end.

@BTIsaac He may not be directly responsible, but you gotta admit that this newcast organization had in mind what Mengsk would do if they displeased him. And it matters much more that the guys running that show are far more afraid of Mengsk than eachother. If anything, he probably made it quite clear what he wanted them to say. He's clearly a despot and far from a benevolent one, and dictatorships can actually be quite simplistic in their thinking and function. It all comes back to Mengsk.

Yes but dictatorships are hardly as simple as that. On the surface, it really does all come back to the dictator, but he's not directly responsible for everything. Many people who was put into their office either by him or by his direct subordinates, will usually profit from the regime, and can get away with everything because the exact same attitude you demonstrated. If things go bad, they are the first to turn their back on the dictator, and execute him for their own crimes.

@BTIsaac Many dictatorships are that simple: In the case of many dictatorships it's "What I say goes, or else!" Essentially he is responsible for what goes on. As for local leaders, they only profit because the dictator allows it, but in many cases these individuals are expedable. Some dictators see themselves as the only real authority in their realms, anybody else in government is an instrument of their will. It's like what King Louis XIV of France said: "I am the state."

Those individuals are no less expendable than the dictator himself. Look, I should know more about dictatorships seeing how I lived in one. You know how it ended? Those supposed expendable individuals realized the dictator was losing face, so they just made a mock trial and shot him for all the things they committed. They then declared the end of tyranny, and everything went on exactly as before. Only with a different leader, and a more careful propaganda.

You're not taking into account that many dictators in fact seize power for themselves instead of just being put there by puppetmasters, some dictators are powermongers instead of scapegoats, gaining their postition on account of the de facto truth that they are the most powerful person in a particular country.

A dictator is, by nature, an autocratic and absolutist position. And most dictators, clearly smarter than the one you mentioned, would've had these expendable individuals killed almost on a casual basis. It happens to alot of these guys, either they keep up the political killings or they suffer a coup and get overthrown.

These dictators stabbed each other in the back pretty often, seizing power from each other. They aren't really in control of anything that's happening.

Saddam DID have Iraq under control, Kim Jong-Il DOES have North Korea under control, Qaddafi DOES have Libya under control, Chavez DOES have Venezuela under control. That's what effective dictators do. These guys were smart enough to kill, brutalize and oppress anyone and everyone who challenged or questioned them.

@BTIsaac That depends. If Bush didn't recklessly get us involved in Iraq, it's likely that Saddam would've died of old age and still in power. He had too many people in the Baath Party ready to die for him for betrayal to spring from there. That's also how dictators stick around, by being highly charismatic and inspiring fanatical loyalty in their minions and many of there people. The most likely canidates for betraying Saddam were his own sons Uday and Qusay, whom were both worse than him.

And it's an invaluable tool to dictators to get their people to love them in spite of many of the tyrannical things that they do. Saddam had what the military call command presence, he walked tall and upright and dominated any and all around him. CHARISMA, man! Hitler, Mussolini, Napoleon, Stalin, Mao; they all had it.

While these guys really are poster boys, they don't even represent a small percentage of dictators in existence. I mean how many other soviet leaders CAN you name other than Lenin or Stalin? And most of those guys don't even know what leadership is about, other than "What I say goes, or you're dead". They were soldiers, without the slightest idea of leadership. Delivering a good speech doesn't make you a good leader, and vice-versa, you don't need charisma to lead.

Essentially, the only reason a dictator has any power, is because the people who hide behind him decide that he makes an excellent scapegoat. If that fails, he's just stabbed in the back and replaced. Trust me when I say, a dictatorship is not absolute power in the hands of one man. It's an entire country run by criminals, who are willing to sell out their best childhood friends for gain. The dictator himself is nothing but a scapegoat.
