Kids are not limited to one chance to get educated, but without good numeracy and literacy by 11 their options are extraordinarily limited in the global workplace. With an Internet connection US kids aren't limited to US education which will make Arne Duncan's job more demanding, & even more so since NYC teachers, when possible, send their kids to a private school to avoid state school inadequacies, even after numerous revamps. Not all parents can read, to read to their child, not our child.
At 12:41 the future secretary of education said, "gave my sister and I." Saddest part is, it was a prepared speech and the man doesn't know grammar. I'm so glad he can play basketball. That should help our kids!
Arne Duncan is alluding to an obsolete phraseology of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 'My husband and I' when he spoke of: 'gave my sister and I'. Thus, if it's good enough for Her Majesty, it's good enough for Arne Duncan, even though it could be argued that such phraseology is retrogressive :-)
I noticed that right when he said it. So very sad. How can we trust this guy to head our education system when he can't properly speak his native language? The fact that Obama selected this guy makes me seriously question the choice I made in November. I'm pretty surprised that there hasn't been more of an outcry about the "I" incident. I guess that just reflects how bad our education system really is; almost nobody even noticed it. Incredibly sad.
They didn't post my first attempt. Poor grammar is not a resume enhancement for Education Secretary, but Obama picked him. The question is: was he selected in spite of, or because of his inability to distinguish between associative and dative case in a simple sentence?
At 12:42, he thanks his mentor for "giving my sister and I" an opportunity. Do we want someone who can't distinguish between associative and dative case in a sentence, heading the Education department?
I also wonder if Ayers was involved in 'improvements' in the school systems there.
Arne Duncan is a great choice! His stance on early learning programs has been strong. Hopefully we can start looking at inexpensive off the shelf technology to improve the classroom experience. Also the pedagogy models need some SERIOUS reworking!
So excited to see this administration get to work! I want to get to work on this!
Arne Duncan has to do nothing to further education for working adults, since working implies the adult can fund their further education at a US/foreign college. A complication is the veterans eligible for funded further education as compensation for, or as an incentive to voluntarily provide 'service' to the US, at your, tax-dollars' expense. A free-for-all scheme would be an option, as in parts of the EU, but choice would often be linked to education not in conflict with government policies.
I was hoping he would have picked Gov. of Wisonsin Jim Doyle. I use to be in the chicago school system and it is nothing compared to the schools here in Wisconsin; both private and public. Doyle has been a huge advocate with the schooling and high education. His wife actually worked at my middle school. They have created great after school programs for the community. He would have been a great choice for Sec. of Education.
Good luck Obama. You've been handed the worst economy to start a presidency. I have faith that you'll be able to become know as the BEST president in United States history. The way you are working has proven to me that you really care about America. If you need any help... you can count on me.
Excellent choice! Glad Mr. Duncan accepted the position. The cabinet is looking great! Looking so forward to the next four -- and hopefully eight -- years!

Let's teach the kids geography so that they know where their jobs will be outsourced.

You're correct! If I were Obama I would have replaced him on the spot. Then Biden and I would find a gramatically sound replacement.

How so?
Name someone more qualified, who isn't vilified by either the teacher's union or the education reformers, and you might be able to make that claim.

What steps will Mr. Arne Duncan take, to help working adults who want to father their educations?

Amen, Mr. Obama this nation needs to turn out smart people. I hope Mr. Duncan can do all, that it takes reform education in the United States.

Change the channel vs. turning off TV... PBS, and to a greater extent, their local affiliates, present educational content, and content of value.
