  • He has a beautiful accent.

Only the wisest people sound like him.

  • I think its got to do with the sequence between "sign" , "white part" and "Black part".

Example: For red : after "black" comes "the Sign" and then comes "White"(In Time).(Notice the sign and colors also has differant time-lengths.)

So when turning clockwise we get red in the middle of the board , but if we turn anti-clockwise we get the sequence for Red in the outherside.

Sorry if any of the use Units are wrong,... I'm only starting in learning.

  • The effective way of teaching.

  • how did he draw those dotted lines so fast?!?

  • @myemailisgrant he keeps the plater pancil perpendicolar to the blackboart so because of the attrition between the two materials he gets this dotted lines

  • como podria mirar esto en español es muy importante ???????

  • He is great!

  • amazing so pro.

  • Sir Walter, Congratulations. You are simply amazing.

  • great prof! seen a lot of his video..very educational!

  • too bad he doesn't teach chemistry. i have a test tomorrow :C

  • @chsxtian did u fail?

  • Inspiring way of teaching!! Thanks for sharing.

  • I found a second rainbow today and thought of Prof Lewin. I will never forget him or what he has taught me.

  • unfortunately 10% of teachers teach with the same enthousiasm

i was good in math and history only cuz my teachers enthousiasm made me actualy listen

  • jep.. Dutch people are smart..

  • I turn green with envy at this astrophysicist. I would LOVE to teach postsecondary education!

  • why is the quality for 8.01 so bad?????????

  • love it ..I'm was just searching on line what make the sky blue.. . Now i know what make the rainbow and the sunset red. =)..

  • quien seria tan valiente de traducirlo al español gracias??

  • Whoa! Brilliant!

  • Whats a rat filter?

  • Wonderful! This lecture is an absolute treasure.

  • This was an hour very well spent. Thank you Professor Lewin!

  • This man is a genius.

  • He's like a real life Dr. Emmett Brown. (Back to the future)

  • @Elitex22 lol yea

  • @Elitex22 lol, i was thinking the same thing. that reminds me of a class i had to take at UNC charlotte, nc. "film criticism", the prof. was a vietnam vet. in a wheel chair. for the next two or three years, i couldn't enjoy watching any movie. each of us had to write a script. me? write? it sounds easy. all man......i'm glad that is over now.

  • Or was the first part of the lecture with the slides of the clowns supposed to show us that in fact our minds are making up the other colors?

  • Ok...stupid question. He is just leaving out the fact that inbetween the red and blue cone are cones of all colors....right? I mean, when i look at a rainbow, i see all the colors not just red and blue.

  • @Vape4life Yeah he just didn't show all the colors there, all the colors that are supposed to be in between are there, our brains are not just making it up.

  • Computer monitors ? electron guns ? .... how old is this ???

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced What has that got to do with anything? Does information you make you scared so you have to reaffirm your faith so you can know all is right with the world again.

  • niceee n informative

  • Absolutely bloody fantastic. I wish my lecturers were like this

  • I wish I had stuff like You Tube when I was younger - Better late than never. It's fantastic that you don't ever have to miss a lecture anymore. Especially when one falls asleep from absorbing too much and you can pick up the lecture from the point you feel asleep; refreshed. Further the parts one does not understand you can play over and over until you do or pause the player and look up things at your fingertips. Plus, I can audit a course from this university and another course from another.

  • @MrSilvestris try Khan academy if you want to educate yourself further in topic x. its a free and damn vast collection of lessons. i myself am a.. well, a simpleton to be honest, but i've read that site for ages and now i actually understand something from something. internet is awesome :D

  • beautiful lecture... really enjoyed it thoroughly, thanks to everyone who contributed to it. Real Science!

  • Too bad, not all teachers are like this. I hate when modern teachers read off the slide from powerpoint. I mean c'mon even janitor could do it too. Or math teacher who follow everything exactly in a book. I could just read a book too >.>

  • @pakhavit Very true - Walter Lewin's demonstrations are the best!

  • I cant believe this guy at 26:10, anyway the whole video was very interesting and fun!

  • @hipnocesar You know all those teachers were partying the night before LOL well...except for that guy that knew if it was polarized LOL

  • Its a double rainbow!

  • The colors RED and BLUE mixed together make PURPLE Professor, NOT GREEN!

  • 12 blackboards, wow.

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced Well, I might as jump into this debate, seeing as it sound interesting. Now then, Point 1: How did all the ingredients in the world come to be? By fusion reactions in the last hours of giant stars. These fusion reactions create the elements silicon, sulfur, chlorine, argon, sodium, potassium, calcium, scandium, titanium and iron peak elements: vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, and nickel. And finally the isotope Iron-56, which is infusible. And the star blows up...

  • Who are the people taking the class? are they preparatory professors?

  • @joseinbush i think they are "high school" physics teachers

  • An amazing lecture. I've gotta get a polarizer sheet!

  • What is the name of the experiment with the pictures of the clown?? I still can't believe it! I'd like read more about it!

  • Ha, I knew he was Dutch... Because of the accent.

  • I had my 13 year old daughter watch this. She came away with a smile and a lot of new information to research for her science project about rainbows. Plus.. it was just a fun lecture class intro. LOVED it!

  • @ytTrollFighter2011

go live in a cave without any technology. One thing is that you don't like it, and that would be your personal opinion... But there is smart people with understanding of physics and maths that have made your life as comfortable as it is today, so sitting on your computer (made by who?) calling it rubbish is...rubbish...

  • @ytTrollFighter2011 maths is gay? I don't even know where to start with that comment

  • @MrJasonbaxter1987 Yeah, I said Math is gay (not retarded "Maths" -- ya twat Brit).

Wait, are YOU gay or something? roflolol.

  • @ytTrollFighter2011 grow up

  • @ytTrollFighter2011 Wow. You are embarrassingly pathetic.

  • @CRISNCHIPS12398 Thanks!

  • »Physics works.« (55:52)

  • That was a great lecture. I really enjoyed it.

  • Loved it ;)

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced The ingredients? this is not a soup recipe, I'm not telling you that god doesn't exists, but what I'm trying to say is that is he really exists he is not useful, science has excluded god's participation on any sense so why do you have to use it to explain things that you don't understand?

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced Everything on this world and even stars, galaxies and space has a explanation all they came from the Big Bang and this one came from the natural interaction of physical laws...

My point is if you don't know the answer that doesn't mean that such question can only be answered with god, if you're ignorant and want to see realy how stuff works without the need of a god, please google your questions.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, I didn't know this video was about god. I wish everybody would just shut the fuck up about god.

  • Your knowledge adds, your knowledge does not subtract. Feynman quote about the flower and the scientist versus the artist, if you didn't pick up on it. I'm sure he meant it that way. You can look it up. Good fun lecture. Thanks.

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced Fuck off with the I KNOW bullshit, YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING AT ALL, NOTHING. Just curl up in a corner and pray to your god that he doesn't strike you down for being a waste of human skin!

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced You say you know God is real. No you don't. You believe he is real, but you don't know it and that's part of the point. When you speak in absolutes you cannot be taken seriously.

  • @SonOfOuranos I am reporting you. We all know God is real. Just because you are in denial of that fact doesn't exist, you don't gotta get mad at other people

  • @MyVoicenotSilenced Prove it. Claims made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence, therefore we can dismiss your hypothesis of god

  • Dotted line!! Answered:

I was so curious about how Prof Walter Lewin made those dotted lines. One answer i found convincing was that he had a special chalk holder. I could not find a chalk holder with such capabilities on the market but since he works at MIT I was cure that some one over the years could have made one. After some time I finally found some one who knew the answer and I just confirmed it. Hold the chalk at an abuse angle from board and push the chalk so that it skids along.

  • Does anyone know which MIT lecture he gives his students the rest of those rainbow questions.

  • don't worry about it, i found them myself soon after posting this question without a question mark.@CometComment

  • this guy proves that enthusiasm is contagious

  • You can tell it's MIT because he just has to tell the fella in the background to turn the slide projector on and off for him.

  • this guy is awesome great physics teacher

  • Now I know what double rainbow means!

  • Try Asian women # lushfmlk.info #

  • Bravo!

    This guy is good.

  • Physics is sexy :-)

  • man this guy does examples this is what profs ned to more often man examples shows us the qestions he mixes theory into the examples now thats teaching

  • hey, what has he done with the accent?

  • Psysics works! 55:45 :D yes indeed it does!

  • how cum this channel has videos of 1 hour+ duration.......

i thought maximum length was 15 min s....

    please reply if u know......

  • @waynerooney420 Because it's a special channel.

  • @waynerooney420 lol. Good spelling.

  • i wanna attend his lecture

  • amazing... ty very much

  • This guy loved the double rainbow video

  • and he killed it with his sun glasses.

  • Now try to explain that:

    watch?v=GrUcbJiyToU

I have checked a little bit and Medjugorje and Fatima are both about 30km east from the sea. Could this be caused by evaporation from the sea?

And I am under the impression that the phenomenon always happens in the evening.

  • he is the best physics lecturer

salute and respect for him 4m india

  • Commendable I pray for his good health Prof Walter Lewin I shall never forget many concepts you have explained in most understanding way. thak U V Much.

  • the tragic beauty of the human condition.

  • how do u divide trig functions, like snells law sin of i/ sin of r?

  • as always i would say Wow... really nice sir

  • RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT FROM IRAN

  • I have studies Physics like a religion and I always wanted to be a Physicist but due to certain reasons I become a Physician.I have seen this video and my observation is that Had I been his student I would have have been teaching there only at MIIT.Long live Walter sir.You are the God of Physics...................I can say....I ahve seen and watched God teaching. Thanks alot.

  • With that kind of accent he could only be Dutch...figures I was right:)

  • @ReadCommentBelow hahaha

  • Very detailed observations, really clearly explained. This is the way to encourage students to think logically, question everything they hear or see, and try to find beautiful answers.

    Great teacher Prof. Lewin.

  • This is awesome!

  • What a fantastic teacher.

  • absolutely beautiful

  • excellent work!

  • Amazing teacher.

  • Lewin is a fantastic lecturer. A role model to follow.

  • MIT costs 60.000$ each semester

  • It would probably be worth it, though if you want to study physics, you can do it to a large extent on your own!

  • @1aMattes..wtf?!..it doesnt even cost that much for the year

  • Thank You .

  • What kind of grades do u have to get to get into MIT?

  • the best

  • i'd say you are in a good spot, but there are a few thousand kids with the same grades as you, I think you must prove you have something unique, something about you that shows imperfection

  • Cool, cool. Thanks for the input!

  • deep in thought maybe?

  • Listen to Richard Feynman´s thoughts about the

Nobel prize ... it did not impress him very much.

Neither did he care too much about the people

involved. He was interested in his work not the

glamour or the fame. Read up on it in his books

and see the interviews on youtube.

    Feynman forever.

  • also read F.A. Hayek's Nobel banquest speech. he wasn't too fond of the whole idea of giving away awards for things that should be taken so seriously. It allows politics to creep into science & other subjects.

  • wow... my god... (or anybody else's)... that clown slide thing is crazy.

  • Great teacher, thanks for the class!!!

  • such a good teacher! physics is so cool, and interesting.

  • very good

  • great professor.... very directive and easy to understand

  • ooh that was interesting. Still i want to know more about that rotating disc q.q

  • ok.. watched it all now, awesome video, first thing tomorrow im taking apart some old sprinklers and building a permanent rainbow machine.

  • @ 14:00 looks like a spinning black and white disk to me. im guessing it does not work on film.

  • actually it does work. The colors aren't too vivid; but focus your eyes on the same location in space (i.e., don't try to follow the same location on the disk as it rotates around), and radially, you'll see slight brownish, slight greenish, and slight blueish, even on the video.

  • As of 3 October 2008, only 17,200 views. Amazes me how someone like this has not had the counter go berserk!

If only I had him as a professor during my undergraduate days!

    Great stuff.

  • Walter Lewin is an excellent physicist and great teacher. There should be a lot more Professors like him in every college course.

  • He means I turn off the light ...but says turn of the light, because if you look carefully he has bottons on his desk to turn them off...

  • does it matter if he didn't say "PLEASE"?

  • wonderfully explains the what is the physics behind the rainbow with the practicals

  • MIT ranks 1st in physics in the world for the past several decades...MIT has 26 Nobel Prize winners in physics.

  • Cambridge has 29 Nobel prize physics winners and 88 in total (more than any other univ).

  • Too bad, most of the winners are from 1900 to 1980s....if you want to see who's the best, MIT has more physics Nobel prize winners than anybody else in the past 10 years! This means MIT is now leading the world for physics not Cambridge.

  • "I learned that 17 Caltech alumni have won the Nobel prize, versus 25 from MIT. You might think the advantage here goes to MIT, but their student body is 5 times larger! Most people are shocked to learn that Caltech's graduating class is only about 200 students. On a per-capita basis, I believe Caltech produces more science Nobel prizes than any other school. Keep in mind that about half of Caltech undergrads major in engineering or computer science, which are not Nobel-eligible disciplines."

  • 'Cambridge' refers to a City in Massachusetts, where the MIT is located.

  • there is a Cambridge university in the UK and the MIT in Cambridge massachusets...

  • all a college does is ell Admit tickets to class.

    1. yes, can come to class.

    2. No, cannot come to class.

Digital lectures can be seen by anyone, anytime, anywhere, any computer, any internet, any devces.

Digital lectures can be seen by billions, billions, around the world, around the clock for free.

    Digital lectures is the future.

  • most schools let you sit in for free

  • great lecture

  • Physics Works. It is awesome. nice lecture.

  • I love Walter Lewin. I work with a prof from MIT that knows this guy fairly well.

  • wow 74 min... how

  • One year ago it was possible to upload that long videos. But know it is not possible anymore. If you look, you will find that this video is uploaded one year ago.

  • " Added: February 26, 2008 "

    wait, what?

  • Wow....this is FUNNY!!! hahaha..

But I read on wikipedia that you cant upload videos that are bigger than 10 minutes anymore. One year ago you could.

But this is interesting, i will find how it works...

    Take care

  • You can upload much longer videos if you have a special account. I think it's a "director" account, which you pay for.

  • Ooh..ok. I see. Tnx for the info

    Take care
