  • part 2?

  • Ultramarines

  • Where is the 2 part? this helped me so much!! cmon!!

  • Your accent is adorable! Where are you from? :)

  • where is part 2!!!!!!! ahhh!!! omg ! hunnry! ahhh lol

  • Where's part 2?

  • part 2 much? :( lol

  • Aaa hey thank you xINFINITY I really needed your tutorials mmm...there's that thing when I try to freeze the selection it removes the picture there's only the plane but when I unfreeze it, it appears again Oh and I use 2012 thanks!

  • @Xanaficated Glad it helped bud - select your object then go into the DIsplay tab on the right, deselect the tickbox that says "Show frozen in grey" good luck modelling =D

  • @Eddievedda1 Thanks man hope you consider making a 2012 Max tutorial, that will help me even more and I'm sure it'll help others as well and yeah one more question,How can I disable that horizontal scale thing that you based the Plane on like in part 2 the one that appears when you first open the program or start a new project.Sorry I sound stupid and unprofessional that's bec. it's the first time I use such a program and I've got no one to teach me and it's tutorials weren't really useful to me.

  • @Xanaficated Cheers :D you want to remove the grid? Select the viewport you dont want the grid in, then press G on the keyboard. yea it takes ages to learn all the hoykeys, they have a load of 3ds max stickers, on an online auction site whos name is filtered on here, where you can stick them onto your keyboard keys and they say what the 3ds max shortcut is :P quite useful actually.

    Good luck

  • I'm using Max 2012 and this doesn't work for me. I unmarked the "Show Frozen in Gray" and everything else leading up to applying the image to the plane, but whenever I drag the image over to the plane the image doesn't appear, but instead the plane just becomes a light gray. The image appears in the box in the material editor, though.

  • how get the background line at the back i cant get that up

  • Wheres part 2?

  • For people who have the 2012 edition:

Just drag the photo onto the plane, no need for changing opactiy, etc

There is no "smooth and highlights" instead, click on "Wireframe" and then click on "Consistent Colours"

pliz like so others can see this =3

  • Where is part 2?

  • Just a question, when you want to model a character with an armor.. do you have to model the character and the armor separately or you model it as one?

  • @GrizzlyThorn As one object is easiest to rig and skin for animation. If its just for display as a static model, probably separately will give you better results. :)

  • dude you need to speak up a bit...as soon as i go from here to music its shaking the walls...

  • i made the 100th like :)

nice vid dude. i wana make characters

    and use them in unity.

  • part 2 ?

  • can flash do the same ?

  • @XBakaNinGyoX Make 3d models? nope, flash is just for 2d animation :)

  • @Eddievedda1 but my sch teacher said it does :(

  • @XBakaNinGyoX 3d models on adobe flash? Havent heard about this. Although im only using Flash CS3

  • @Eddievedda1 wait . is flash cs3 and flash the same ?

  • @XBakaNinGyoX yea, cs3 is just the version number :)

  • @XBakaNinGyoX then why did you ask him if your teacher answered your question?

  • @CWScott24 answered which one ? Sorry if i made u mad ;;;

  • @XBakaNinGyoX you didnt make me mad. but you asked him if flash do the same things as 3ds max, and when he said no you said but my teacher said it could. so why would you ask if you already had an answer from someone else? but flash can take pre- rendered animations from 3ds max and use those, but flash can not make a 3d model and allow you to animate it.

  • @CWScott24 its just that i dont think my teach is really that professinal like . and everything she says confuses me ;n;

  • is it possible that when you finish makingthe character, it could be used in a game. Using game engine such as unity 3d?

  • @tecnopro90000 Yep, thats the main point really ;)

  • @Eddievedda1 thanks :D

  • When i try to place the image onto the plane it turns white, i have deselected the "Show frozen in grey" box, what has happened?

Could someone please help, i am on 2011 but it is not far from 2010, which i guess is the version you're using.

  • hey how do you add the pictures .. because i cant find the button you are pressing ... what verion do you have'

  • @thekingproductions1 In the material editor? Click "standard" at the very top and change it to a "bitmap" ? :)

  • i hate 3d max but i have to make a human model for a college project .... thanks so much for uploading a step by step easy to follow tutorial, thanks to you i should pass this class

  • @MissDell22 Glad it helped :) Good luck Dell

  • How do I get my bitmap image to come out clear. I tried it but its really pixley.

  • @draconis93 three things you can do.

Use a bigger image with a higher Dots Per Inch resolution. (ensure your plane is the correct size).

use a clearer image, with bold lines in black and white.

Or ajust your graphics card settings on your windows control panel may help.

    Good luck

  • When i freeze a selection, it turns gray, is there a setting, where i can change this? And as a side note, great tutorial.

  • @dennipettersson Right click, object properties, deselect show frozen in grey. Or select the object, sidebar Display tab, scroll down and again deselect "show fronzen in grey" ;)

    Good luck

  • @Eddievedda1 Ah, that did the trick. Thank you very much. And once again, great tutorial, it is always nice, to have the more experienced people, help out us newbies.

  • thank you this is really helping me ( i didn't know how to put the images on)

  • DOW! ^_^

  • if you put in two different profiles of the character like a front and a right side, do you need to make sure they are the exact same size and that they are positioned in the same place on the papers you drew them on?

  • @AustinAlive1 Ideally yes you do. But you can resize in max. Its a pain if they are not aligned =/

  • woooooooooooooo

    thanx

  • Id give you 5* if i could

  • awsome this is awsome thanks sub rate 5 can i have you msn plz

  • @ultraphoennix Hi Ultra. Sure, ill message you it :). Although i talk to people over Email more often .

    All the best, Eddie.

  • @Eddievedda1 thank you

  • @Eddievedda1 hay i don't your msn but your not online but thanks

  • when i freeze the selection it turns WHITE :(

  • @thewaysh In the display tab, top right of screen, click that then scroll down until you get the tickbox "Show frozen in grey" - de-select it. :)

  • @Eddievedda1 10x amigo :P

  • Please help. When I import my picture to the material changer then it doensnt let me inport it onto the plain!

  • @PhatStudiosPresents Tried selecting the plane first then clicking apply to selection in the material editor. Or drag the material onto the plane.

    Good luck.

  • thanks!

  • Do you have links to the side view of this character reference?

  • @N00BZ1LLA Im sorry but not for this character, didnt use a side view. If you want to get some goodfererance imags for a space marine, check out the Ultramarines Movie website and in the gallery there are some good images to use ;)

  • THANKS SO MUCH, YOU ARE THE BEST

  • MY MATERIAL ISNT WORKING!!! PLEASE HELP!!! the plane keeps turning white when i try to add a material to it please tell me what im doing wrong

  • @mms1911 Click the "show material in viewports" button in the material editor, it will fix that ;)

  • when i push "m" i do not get the same window as you... where is it in the actualy menu's ? thanks :]

  • @KyleSimonEaster Hmm odd. Try top right of your screen, largish button called "Material Editor"

    =)

  • @Eddievedda1 I Get the same as "m" Im using 2011 edition.. think thats why? obviously it'll work the same but the layout is much different dont have the box you say to tick or anything the same you do.. Anyway you could take a look and explain that part for me as if you were using 2011 ? - thanks

  • @KyleSimonEaster I have 2010 sorry :( dont knowwaht the 2011 layout is like :(

  • @Eddievedda1 What if i send you a screen shot of the menu i get when i push "m" and see if you notice any words that may leed me to what your doing ? :] worth a shot ?

  • @KyleSimonEaster Sure i guess its just an updated Material editer interface.

Upload on photobucket and PM me the link?

  • my picture does't say its dimensions?

  • @h5vhh Right click it and select properties. ;)

  • Great stuff Eddie like always, i was wondering how do i set a front reference image that of course face you then set another one in the left view port of the same person but looking left, it always seems to put in the same image of someone looking forward, please help thanks :)

  • @M477CROWD3R Create a plane in the front viewport and follow like in this video. Then move to the left or right viewport and create another plane following this guide through again. You need two pictures of course and you should use 2 material "slots" in your material editor, 1 for each image.

    Good luck. =)

  • @Eddievedda1 Thanks alot, got it working now ;) cheers, keep up with the great tuts, there a big help :D 10/10

  • It won't let me deselect 'show frozen in gray.' I don't know why, but it won't....

    Lovely tutorial though. :3

  • Click the object first to select it, then try to deselect. Work now? :P

  • No, it didn't. I think the program as a whole completely failed when I got it lol. It also won't let me open the reference picture, or any picture, so I have something to go by. I follow the directions, but still. XD. Sorry for the trouble lol.

  • Hmm, i had a glitchy version of mudbox before. Perhaps try uninstalling then reinstalling it?

Its no problem mate, i live to serve ;) lol

  • @Eddievedda1 I'll try that. I've got this video bookmarked, so if it still doesn't work, I'll be sure to pester you about it! :P. Thanks for all your help, though, I appreciate it a ton. <3333.

  • hey can you help me guys? i got a little problem..

when im moving my front view, my perspective view is also moving. and when im freezing my perspective view, my front view will also be freeze.

what can i do to make my perspective view the only one that will be freeze?

  • @wizangel You mean when you're zooming in/out a viewport or when you move a "freezed" object inside a viewport?

  • yeah something like that..

for example, like in this tutorial. when he zoom in/out and move an object in front view, the perspective view still remains in his position.

how can you do that? coz in my project, when im moving my front view bg, the perspective view bg also moves. so when i place an object in left foot in front view and try to place another object the other. the perspective view also moves then the object i place will not be in place. i try to freeze it but they both freeze

  • How do you open it

  • Open what sorry?

  • i have a problem. everytime i set the picture in material editor, it shows on the plane a bunch of tiny images of that image.

  • In the material editor once you select your image there are some settings for tileing or stretching your image. Ajust those. Im sorry i cant be more spesific - i dont have 3ds max running on this pc at the moment until i buy 2010.

  • i love your voice :)

  • lol thanks xD

  • Explain the problem instead of swearing?

Id expect you haven't clicked the "Show material in viewports" button on the material editior?

  • Comment removed

  • How come the reference image shows up distorted as hell? Has anyone found any solution to this or is just another thing to live with.

  • Try changing your graphics card settings. But yea ive been living with such things really. Im sure there is a way around this. But i just live with it an use clear bold reference images.

    Good luck

  • why use max when theres maya?

  • Max and maya are both by autodesk, max is more widely used and is better for all aspects of 3d like games, movies, design etc. Where maya is more specalised for movies, so i have been told. =)

  • @Baldoxxx4000 Because 3ds is just as good, and maya is pretty overpriced. I think they are both overpriced but hey...

  • Thank you kind sir. =]

    I subbed ya. (y)

  • tnx man you helped me :)))

  • hi, when i freeze the plane the texture disappears in 3d studio max 2010. Is that a bug or i have to change something?

  • ahh, figured out, had to uncheck "Show Frozen in Gray" on the Display tab.

  • hey Eddie I have just finished my 3D MAX diploma and I think your methods are brilliant keep on keeping on

  • i have a problem . I make a tutorial in 3ds max, how to model an audi tt 2008 and i met this problem : --- i cannot select the edges and the polygons anymore, only if I click on the vertices. I think that i pressed on some buttons on my keyboard and i dont know the shortcuts. If somebody can help me pls respond urgent because i want to finish the tutorial ----- thanx

  • is that for beginers ?

  • war hammer is fun

  • where can i get that stupid pic or something like it?

  • Stupid pic?

The ref image used is linked in the vid description.

Drawing your own or searching the web for suitable ones is good also.

  • Omg that was so fast reply

i need a pic like this but i dont know what is the name of pictures like this on 3d max if u know what i mean

i mean what do they call it 3d max character pictureS? or 3d max models pictures? give me the link for picutres like that

  • Heh i was checking my emails the minute you posted :P

Its a "reference picture" or "reference image"

You can also search for character concept art which sometimes proves useful.

    Good luck.

  • thanks alot u really helped me out

im going to subscripe and rate to thank u

  • No probs, good luck modeling, and thanks =)

  • and u are a stupid user in youtube......

  • lol

    u think im stupid

    thx that is so ethical

  • hey, i did what you say, but my picture became so blurry, what can i do to make it more clear?

  • Scaling your picture down in photoshop before adding it to the scene will help usually. or try doubling the dimensions of the plane. So if your picture is 500x400, make a plane that is 1000x800.

Hopefully that helps. .. or play with your graphics settings.

    Good luck.

  • im using 3ds max 9. it wont let me copy the image into the plane.. it is adjusted to file size(l/w), but it wont let me... any feedback would be great.

  • What happens when you drag the material onto the plane then? Clicked the 'show material in viewports' button if it is not highlighted , in the material editor?

  • OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. At first i didnt get this but now i got it THANKS <:D

  • TO MAKE THE REFERENCE PIC VISIBLE IN ALL VIEWPORT in 3dsmax 9 GO TO CUSTOMIZE->VIEWPORT-CONFIGURATION

there you can switch the rendering mode to another than wireframe

  • oops sorry, i think i found it in object propities butttt it hasnt had any effect, my plane is just white, (grey if i take down the self illumiastion)

  • Hi there. Yea i have never used 2009 but i know it is a little different. (just to be awkward). I know someone else had this problem and found a solution to it, cant remember how they did it though, sorry i cant be of any help on this one.

  • hey thanks for replaying anyways, im just gonna try making a model and use the male bipod as a reference, im gonna get the 2010 version soon so i can come back to these tuts later on, thanks again!

  • i cant find this "show frozen in grey" tickbox anywere? im in the 2009 version if it makes a difference

  • Hi eddie, I like your tutorials, just a question... could u post a link to the robo sketch pls?

    thx ~sly

  • Hi, thanks =D

The robo sketch? Image used here yea? Just linked it in the vid description.

    Good luck =)

  • hey when i click freeze selection it turns black

  • found solution

  • Yea nice one, "Show frozen in grey" tickbox yea ;)

    Good luck

  • whats the solution??

  • i forgot to click the shad gray thingy

  • oh damn overread it >.>

thx - keep on making tutorials =)

  • Comment removed

  • yes finally i learned how to put picture, thanks man i dont regrate subcribing you

  • Hey. Just got into 3ds max and i was wondering how you put the images into the top right view box. thanks a lot, this is the best tut I have found on youtube cheers again

  • Its exactly the same as this here. Just create your plane in the top right viewport and right click the viewport name, selecting "Smooth and Highlights".

    Should work out ;)

    Good luck.

  • could u give me an image to use? mine doesnt show up .. i think my image is a wrong 1. please..

  • The "show material in viewports" button is selected?

What type of image format are you using? .jpg or Bmp should work fine.

  • There has got to be a better way than texturing a mesh. Even Blender has background images.

  • You can set an image as the background in Render>Environment and effects and selecting a background BMP texture. But that only shows up when you render the scene or if you view one window as active-shade which would still make it impossible to model with.

Using a plane means you can hide or move the images when required - it takes 30 seconds to set up a set of reference images and i have found no real drawbacks of using this method. ;)

  • Allright, pretty weird though. It's a simple and useful feature that works perfectly in blender

  • uhm my picture im trying to use on my plane isn't appearing and I don't know why, i'm doing everything you said to do in the tutorial. i've tried multiple pictures...same outcome.

  • I found my problem I didn't show materials in the materals panel. But now I have another problem where is the show material for front, right, left view? I cannot find it, I have been starting slow in modelling, I moved from milkshape 3D to this and its completely different and was more complicated than I expected to my unfortunate discovery.

  • Yea, glad you fixed your first problem. The attached video troubleshoot covers that.

Have you right clicked the viewport name and changed them to "Smooth and highlights". You may be viewing wireframe at the moment. ;)

  • lock when u are in material editeor press show standard map in viewport and it well appear

  • this happened to me too. thanks sloomo

  • where can i get this program? please PM me. thx.

  • Unfortunately its not free. But you can get it on the Autodesk website (google it ;) ) and download a 30 day trial first.

  • darn. do you know if there are any free ones? if not well thx anyway. and IF i ever get this 3d program then be ready for questions, witch naturally you dont have to answer if you dont want to. and befor i start sending questions i'll be sure to watch the tutorials.

  • I think blender is free, try searching it. :P

    Sure thing, good luck

    Eddie

  • yay space marine, great tutorial really helped!

  • heres my problem when i drag and drop it it doesnt show on the plane... expect if i render it.

anyways does the file need be certain type ? png work ?

  • Check the video response - Troubleshoot. ;)

Im gonna re-do this vid to include it later.

    Good luck.

  • when i freeze into place.. it vanishes lol again

  • WOOT WOOT your suggestion worked but now i have another problem. i assume the 3ds max u are useing is from 2008, but the one i am useing is from 2009, as 2009 was specifically made for architechture when i get into the part where u inport the bit map image on to the sphere it comes up as tiles (repeated images in rows) if you have any ideas or know anyone who can help me plzz say.

    THANKS

  • Nice one ;)

Erm, yea im using version 9. =/

There should be options if u scroll down to stretch or tile the image? Not sure with 2009 sorry.

  • im useing 2010, not sure if this applies to my version of 3ds :[ why is there much x.x

  • Thanks and by the way i didnt mean your voice wasent clear i meant the actual video quality but nice vid and ill try that suggestion out.

  • Yea no worries, ill probably redo this in better quality.. once i figure out how exactly hmm. :P

Also covering a few points that people have trouble on.

    Good luck.

  • Can u tell me why at the bit where it says delect show frozen in grey i cant click on the box to deselect it that is the only bit i cant do so please help me.

    SOMEONE HELP

  • Make sure you have your object selected. Or right click your object go to properties and change show frozen in grey from there.

    Hope its clear.

  • UR NOT CLEAR

  • Owkay, thanks for the feedback?

  • how u can make black background

    thx

  • Go to Customize in the top bar, User interface.

You can change the background colours and everything else too. Black is easier on your eyes if modeling for long periods of time ;)

  • Please send me the reference for this ;)

  • Sure , pmed ya ;)

  • bad quality

  • Ok when i froze my selection the whole thing turned grey

  • Ok, select your object then go to the display tab on the right tool bar, scroll down and de tick the tick box sayin "Show frozen in grey" ;)

You can now freeze it ok.
