I will have to find this film and compare it to the original. I love both Hepburn and Glenn Close so I think that it would be hard to compare performances. Both are probably equally good, just different. Although I've seen the original many times and Hepburn burned up the screen in it. The verbal sparring she did with Peter O'Toole was absolutely magical. Loved it!
I have watched both movies many times - this one and the one with Hepburn and O'Toole - and actually I like this one more. More real -though it's always a theatrical text - and intense. And I find all the actors very, very good. And beautiful soundtrack, btw.
i thought glenn close was incredible...the reason she didnt match hepburn was because her film and supporting cast wasn't nearly to the level of the 60s film.
close was far more realistic in her portrayal than hepburn though. she gave eleanor humanity whilst hepburn gave her humour and wit.
Even though Glen Close is far from my favorite actress, and even though she was wrong for this role, we do have to be grateful that for once it isn't Meryl AGAIN.
Close was miscasted in this remake. Elenor was supposed to be a fading beauty. You could tell that Hepburn's Elenor was once very beautiful (she was still attractive). I just don't see that with Close. She is also copying Hepburn's Oscar winning performance too much (Close has stated that she's a big fan of Hepburn). She should have made it her own (it must have been difficult, though). It's still a respectable performance, but Hepburn will always be Elenor...

Close gives up too much of her character in this scene; the audience always knew that no matter what her words, Hepburn's Elenor had unplumbed depths to her that you hadn't seen because she didn't want you to. That keeps you riveted; these characters are not supposed to bear their souls, even when they are presumably bearing their souls...
I want to say I think Glenn Close tried to do something different, and show a caring side. In the Original it was more of a Chastising the sons, while still loving, but the acting was spot on. This version it's really lacking depth, they seem very two-dimensional.
I like Glenn Close, but Hepburn defined this role and gave perhaps the best performance of any screen actor ever. And Peter O'Toole matched Hepburn, at least in energy, vigor and pathos. And Hopkins was no slouch, either. In truth, this remake was difficult to watch, just because of the excellence of the prior performances.
and for those hepburn fans who want to diss glenn close, katharine greatly admired glenn, much moreso than any other actress of her generation. whilst crawford preferred dunaway, davis preferred fonda...hepburn believed in glenn close. when asked if she could fault close, kate replied "she has big feet".

This remake reminds me of the moon. It's an impressive source of light, but once you've seen the sun, the moon pales in the comparison.

Okay, it's settled, Close is a far better Eleanor than Hepburn. NOT dismissing Hepburn, she's a genius, but Close has this role nailed.

I thought Hepburn was deliberately theatrical, whereas Close was convincingly real. It all depends on what they are trying to do.

Oh my goodness...what a total copycat performance from Katharine Hepburn's, whose was much, much, much better then Miss Glenn Close's.
