  • ok...i think patti gave her eye lashes away..5:53.OMG..and than again at 5:57.that is an awesome gesture and token...

  • highest version wow super nice she's a epic...

kyla from philippines make this song relaxing and she gave a justice to this song....

  • Sublime

  • Year??

  • @SimsLover2011 1999 or 2000 not sure which!

  • @ramsdenrik Ok, thanks =]

  • Pattie has so much soul see only blacks can sing with a lot of soul because of all the things we've been through. And only black women can ever be called soul sisters just listen to the soul behind this song.

  • @freddie0679 I think that's a bit of a narrow minded view, what about Dusty Springfield, Joss Stone, Annie Lennox, Adele to name but a few, I don't think you can possibly say that the color of anyone's skin gives them an ability to sing Soul, also if I made a statement that only White women can do ......... it would probably be seen as racist!

  • @freddie0679 ...Black people DO HAVE alot of SOUL....We are VERY talented people......BUT there are some white girls that can sing with SOUL....Jessica Simpson and Chritina Aguilera....I can picture Christina BELTING this tune out.....

I am NOT trying to turn this into a race thing.... Every race has their fair share of talented singers

  • @freddie0679 I'm a Black man and I'm asking where the fuck did you come up with this from? Michael McDonald, Ambrosia, Boz Scaggs, Joss Stone. Have you ever heard of white soul? Please don't say anything like that again.

  • the best I have ever heard. what a woman, what a voice.

  • those backups sounded like luther...? is it him?

  • @klumh NO, but he was at this concert ( Mariah Carey too). They had sung "Is It Still Good To You" just before this song.

  • Did she put some money in her bra at the end of the video? What a great voice and performance. She is truly an American treasure.

  • I did not see ''I believe I can fly'' coming! I was like YES!!!!!!! Go Patti!

  • Great video and I have all of Miss P's music. Was soooo excited to see her in New Orleans and bought a new suite for the occasion. A friend of mine took her pearls to be re-strung to match her outfit, bought her own evening wear too. We drove 130 miles to see Patti and we left at intermission. It was horrible and I thought what a waste of money and time. If I wanted to have a gospel night, I would have gone to another venue and got my money's worth from drag queens......what a sell out

  • @hampthechamp57 Yikes lol, what was so bad about it?

  • @hampthechamp57 What wa sso bad about it?

  • I didn't say the whole world, I said many. But anyway thats that.

  • sou brasileiro com muito orgulho com muito amorrrrrr

  • THE TRUE MIS DIVA

  • Love this true diva

  • Hhmmnn :))

  • linda

  • LUV YOU MISS PATTI

  • NUFF RESPECT TO PATTI. SHE IS A LEGEND, BUT THIS SONG BELONGS TO JUDY GARLAND 4EVER.

  • @aligned576 I understand that you feel that way, but sometimes you have to hand over your "ownership tights". In this case Judy has to, because Patti took this song to another level & has keep it alive. This song is now more of a Patti Labelle classic now, because of the soul she put in to it. Now more than just one type of audience likes the song.

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life No I'm sorry, this will forever be a Judy Garland classic, if you asked nayone on the street they would view this as a classic from the wizard of Oz and Garland, not PAtti Labelle. Now yes LAbelle made it her own into a gospel antehm of hope, however Judy Garland would not be in anyway under an oblgation to hand over ownership because although PAtti has a great version it is just that, a version, not the original

  • @moroney1 Yea it is still a classic by Judy, but it is also a classic by Patti LaBelle, because she sung with a lot of more passion than Judy( no shad to Judy). She kept this song alive more than any other artist. It has become her signature song, and everyone knows that.

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life This song is not recognised as a PAtti Labelle classic at all, maybe among pati labelle fans but within the wider world this song is noted as being a Judy Garland song and has been long before even Patti was born. You may believe PAtti sung the song with more passion, but that is subjective,I myself would disagree and would state that high notes dont always mean more emotion.Overall most people are not even aware that PAtti sung this song as she is not as know as Judy

  • @moroney1 I don't refer to the high notes as passion. Sometimes she doesn't even use high notes when performing this song. & actually many people know Patti LaBelle sung & still sings this song. She has sung it more than any other artist besides Judy, which is why many people pay have paid tribute to her with that song(Mariah Carey & Jennifer Hudson for ex.) But anyway I think its a Patti LaBelle classic..you think its a Judy Garland classic. Its an opinion not a fact. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life PAtti LAbelle is an under rated artist, many dont know about her period, She may have sung it more han anyother artist, that doesnt change the fact that if someone mentions this song they instantly think of the film, not Labelle. It is extremely inaccurate to state that more people would correlate this song to PAtti LAbelle than to the wizard of Oz, that is just untrue. Patti gives a great version, but thats what it is a great version. You're bing a biased Labelle fan here

  • @moroney1 trust me if its one thing i'm not its bias. And i think yo're a little blind to how many people know her. And i said nothing about the wizard of oz i'm saying that many people know this as a Patti LaBelle song also.

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life You didnt say also, you asserted this is more known as a Patti classic now. And I mentioned the movie because that is why it is so attributed to Garland. And I'm not blind to Labelle's popularity, outside of American she is nearly unheard of, and if she is known only in the most vague sense

  • @moroney1 Well for someone unknown outside of America she sure does tour outside of America a lot. But anyway you think its more of a Judy Garland Classic and I think it more of a Patti LaBelle classic. Debating is not gonna change that, so good day.

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life She does tour outside of the states, doesnt mean she is well known, wish she was known more in Europe, she deserves it,but she isnt. And yes Labelle has made this a classic in her own right, but in the over all scheme of things this song all over the world is attributed to the film and thus Judy Garland more than anything or anyone else, yes some are aware of PAtt's version as some are aware of Eva Cassidy's version but it is credulous to state it is more of a Patti classic

  • @moroney1 When she tours outside of America her concerts are sold out because she is known outside of the states. But anyway you have your thoughts and I have mine. I still feel Patti owns the song so nice debating but good bye.

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life It is deluded to state that this song is more connected with Patti Labelle, just as deluded as to state Lady Marmalde is more connected to Xtina, it just is not true

  • @moroney1 Yes but I and many people connect to Patti LaBelle. I'm sure more people connect to Judy because she sung it originally. But I will always connect that sung to Patti because I never even heard it until I heard her sing it....good day

  • @LaBelleObamafan4life You may prefer it, tbh most days I prefer her version too, but the song globally is only referred to as more of a Labelle classic by a tiny minority

  • homegirl jumped over that rainbow so high she hasn't touched the ground yet in two decades....

    DAYUM!!!!

  • @tomtompataygutom she sang the hell out of this song and she is the best person I've heard this song I hit the wrong button I loved it!!! and you are right she jumped over every color of the rainbow.....love me song crazy Patti Notes too.

  • The best female vocalist EVER!

  • Absolute perfection. It doesn't get any better than that. no words can adequate express what Patti's amazing abilities convey to us. She can make me literally cry just by hearing the beauty of her voice.

  • This woman is over 60 and still got it. I don't know of any other entertainer her age that looks like I want to when I grow up (lol) and can sing like that! Go head on Ms. Patti!!

  • @CareyP1972 Well she's actually in her late 60s now, but this video is over 10years old..

  • @moroney1 - And she is still tough. How many women her age do you see that can hit the octaves that she can? Not many. Dresses to the nine's. Again, she's made from the good stuff and I admire her!

  • @CareyP1972 Oh she still has a very good voice, not as good as this but still super for her age, her and tina are stupendous for having such sreght at their ages

  • Patti is a work of God's own hands. What an inspiration!!!

  • I don't know about thicker vocal chords and all that; but this I DO know, Patti LaBelle singing this (or any other song) is indeed FIERCE! Thanx rognofreakymar. One more thing: remember this people, and as I said, I Do love me some Patti, Judy Garland DID "DO THE DAMN THING" too, on the original!

  • legendary !!!

  • My daughter is fighting cancer and loves this song!!

  • FABULOSA..........ES LO MAXIMO

  • she can make grown men cry with here rendition.one of the most humblest persons ever.

  • @ayla8251 You ain't kiddin'... I have tears in my eyes right now. I adore this woman. What an extraordinarily giving artist.

  • It sounds like she took singing lessons from William Shatner

  • Miss Patti is the best person to ever do this song. I heard Sarah V version but that was jazz. Patti did R&B/Soul/Gossip & Jazz which is a difference between the two.

  • @Druezer I am totally with you. I love Patti's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I'm feeling @noreexic is a HOARDER who totally lives in the past, & for some unknown reason can NOT connect to this song.

    I love this song!

  • This rendition is gorgeous. For a complete change of pace, check out Sarah Vaughan's live performance circa 1958. Quieter, but no less beautiful and no less touching.

  • Truly a class act!

  • MrVallen49 - Patti is now 67 and very much alive according to my research! I love her! Do you know something I don't know?

  • @judygrell he was talking about his wife

  • She just broke the place up!!! No wonder when this concert went on a live C.D. it won a grammy, it's phenomenal. I will always love Judy's sombre version. But Patti really made this songe her own and I love how she made it into a song about ambition and hope!

  • I remember taking my wife out to Radio City to see sister Pattie perform. It was during a hard time for her because found that she had a serious illness that is irreversable. When Pattie sang this song,..It made her evening. She talked about it for years. She is gone now to the world over the rainbow. When I see Sister Pattie sing Over The Rainbow, I can feel my wife sitting next to me cheering and us dancing to the music. Thank You My Sister****From Both of us. Peace**

  • Love it, Love it!!! Nobody can sing this song like Mrs. Patti!!!!!!!! Her voice is a true gift; love her and Mrs. Patti can fly over the rainbow!!!!

  • I Believe

  • Patti said she she was about to fly away and wasn't leaving NONE of her stuff!!! LOL, I love her humility...she is so REAL!

  • @LokiLasher

I agree. It's one thing to give it your own touch. It's another to trash the original melody so that it's unrecognizable.

  • @Druezer but you dont need the original melody, otherwise its like kareoke, some of the great covers hav been radically different, from Tori Amos doing Smells Like Teen Spirit to Ike and Tina doing Proud MAry. If you want the original then listen to it, a cover shoudnt be an ode to its predescer it should be something fresh and this is, it changes the original beautiful sad song to a song that is one of hope, dont like it? Then move on and go back to Judy

  • @noreexic I hear what you're saying, but if you wandered that far from the original is it really a cover any more or is it just a song inspired by Somewhere Over the Rainbow? I guess it doesn't matter. I've heard artists simply change the tempo of the song and produce a very different mood in the process. It's a personal thing I guess. For me, she destroyed the song. If others enjoy it, more power to them. I think she has talent but I don't enjoy the histrionics. Thanks for the refs.

  • @Druezer It has the same lyrics imagine the trouble she'd get into if she claimed this was a new song!!. I can understand you not liking the histronics, especially if you are used to the talented old altos like the late great Judy Garland. Patti labelle sings in a RocknRoll style populrized by Little Richard who brought Gospel inflections and screeches into popular music to denote emotion, it was all about emotion over anything else and the more you warbled the more emotion shown.

  • @noreexic Yeah, I've seen Ella and Sarah V live. Cleo Laine too. It seems to me they did definitely put their own stamp on a song nonetheless. Nice to engage in a conversation like this and pick up a bit of musical history. These things can get a little heated at times. I look forward to hearing Amos' Teen Spirit. I'm a great fan of the original.

  • @Druezer Yeah a lot of Youtube is full of 'IM Fucking Right You ARe A Moron' mentality and it should just be a discussion instead. Yeah Tori Amos made the song inot a ballad with her piano and to this day there is a split in Nirvanna fanse between those who love and hate it

  • that is so sweet she took the time to get the flowers and gifts

  • omg she got so many gifts from the audience how many rappers or singers do you know get not one but almost ten gifts from different audience members? wow that is just so cool!

  • Patti has a voice that only could have given her. She's so talented and uses her voice to bring you to your knees. I just love the emotions expressed in all her music. God bless her †

  • Patti has a voice that only could have given her. She's so talented and uses her voice to bring you to your knees. I just love the emotions expressed in all her music. God bless her †

  • Mamam sung this song....idk who talking about screaming but mama DID not scream in this at all.

  • - she looked && sounded amazing.!!!

  • I guess when Patti was born, God just said BAM....you gonna be the ultimate soulstress and that was that! mmm I love this woman.

  • shes awsome

  • look to all who don't like Patti's magnificent voice, just because you can't carry a tune in a freakin bucket don't mock Patti, She is incomparable, you tone deaf moron!

  • Patti is KILLA!!!!! NO ONE can match her voice. If you think she sings like a duck... that's ok... cuz she can quack all the way to the bank and to the hall of fame!

  • Comment removed

  • @nolapas711 Yep & 3 weeks ago she screamed some more money in her bank account with two sold out concerts just for all the haters.

  • i love her i have know words then can desribe this beautiful women that god has made.

  • She sings like a duck.

  • @celsodossi o yaa...and that ugly duck is you :)

  • @celsodossi listen asshole go and duck your head down the tiolet, piss off and do something else to amuse yourself, twat.

  • @celsodossi get the fuck out of it ,piss off and go do something else like ducking your head down the tiolet, twat.

  • @celsodossi duck can sing?

  • omg! can't no one touch you on this. best voice out today still.

  • i remember this showing on pbs.. i was in the 4th grade and my mommy let me stay up the watch the whole concert. incredible. i was in the 4th grade and a patti fan. for christman i got "Fame " for a present and i played it until the cassette tape started to drag horribly. from that time on soul music has my whole heart.

  • OMG I get goose bumps & chills up & down my spine everytime I hear Patti sing this song!!! She's So Awesome!!!

  • Apart from Mama Chaka!! Tell me another 50+ or even 66+ woman that can sing like patti?? I may not know but as far as i know Chaka and Patti are some of the vocal greats of the past 40 Years!!

  • some people love screaming!

  • so amazing ...she got it... no one can rival with this song to patty

  • Patti you better wear that gown!

  • I love ignorant people who say just because Patti Labelle does a few vocal embellishments and shows the range and agility of her voice, she's not singing it melodically...there is more than one way to sing a song, statements like "less is more" or "he/she is over-singing" we created for people that can't put as much energy into a sound like patti labelle, so they need to pull back because that sh*t sounds awful...Patti has the vocal chops to take it there and back and there again!

  • Most people wish they could still sing like this at that age!
