Yes, it is manual, no spring, although the blade will snap itself shut when it is about one inch away from being closed. I own one and I love it, I was so tempted to abuse it since this is the best knife I have ever owned. I have gave it much abuse, the only minor thing that has happened was some Teflon chipped away from tip of the blade, that was the result of trying to open a coconut, man those things are solid!

I want more coldsteel knives now, just waiting until I have more cash.

You should have a better coating tho. I have a mini lawman, and while I really love it, for it's blade shape, its excellent adjustable thumbstud, strong lock and superb grip, the coating litterally peel off at the slightest use.

It's more pain than a real coating... that's too bad.
