If only they could get her onto the mainline again even if it was for just one run, an anniversary kind of thing, it would be great to see her in her element instead of in a museum, Steam engines now are becoming more and more popular with the youth aswell with the steam excursions we have, the amount of youths you see taking photos & getting videos!! Bring her back !!!
They tried alright, they came within an inch of killing themselves, any faster for any amount of time that probably would of been it. They had to make sure they survived to tell the tale.
Typical germans had to try and beat it AND FAILED!
@60037 The driver apparently reckoned if it hadn't been for the speed restrictions they would have hit 130mph. Even so, seeing her go through a station at 126mph must have been bloody frightening!
its 50th annerviersary of the speed run in 88 (its her 70th this year)unfortunatly Mallard cant steam at the moment but you never no for the 75th anniversary
Mallard will never steam again, it was very limited for the last runs, but to do it now, they would ruin it, Mallard is in too good a condition to be run again, but July 5th / 6th Mallard will grace the outdoors, along with UoSA, Bittern and Sir Nigel, and the NRM, to celebrate 70 years of the run.
She's obviously not in good enough condition if she's unsteamable. I'm a strong believer that what makes her, and other machines of her era, special is the life, sound, sight, and smell. Her authenticity is in those aspects, not her material fabric. Yes she looks nice and shiny in the NRM, as I see her there every other day while I research upstairs, but I would much rather see her overhauled (note..not restored..there's a difference) and running. I hope they relent for her 100th anniversary.
@yorksteam Wow, I've just realised I've come to this video twice, seen your comment, and replied both times. I'd completely forgotten I'd replied the first time. Huge apologies. Obviously I'm just a glutton for punishment ;-)
thats because it stole the record from the Flying Scotsman. The Scotsman actually held the speed record for If what I've heard is right, 10 to 15 years before the Mallard broke its record.
its funny the yanks claimed they ran a steamie at 140mph but its impossible when you look how un streamline the americans trains are and the mallard could have gone faster but they had to slow her down because of an apporaching junction

@edj66 Its not about money, You wanna find the drawings for A4's? because no-one else can.

@EastMidlandsSteam They're in the NRM archives as far as I know?

@edj66 if they were in the archives then Bittern would have been completed much quicker.

The crew should have tried for 127 mph

How would it ruin it? From what perspective I mean? It's obviously not in a good condition internally, because it isn't steamable.

Great video.
It's such a shame Mallard isn't in working order these days. It'd be wonderful to see it back out on the main line.

World's Fastest steam train ever, beat that America!! (sorry forgot the word steam)
gcoochy 5 years ago
hehe. Our streamlined 4-8-4s like the class Js and Northerns can run at speeds in excess of 110MPH with a 15 car train.
When the mallard set that record I think she was pulling about 7 cars.

The usual then was 9, and Mallard had 6 plus the dynamometer car (which is in the NRM with Mallard) 240 tons in total.

Nice video. I have always liked the sound of European train whistles. They have a toyish sound which is fun.
