This preamp is ok, but uad is way over rated the components they use today are absolutely not the same ones that were used back in the 70's ill stick to my ssl console and pass on this
Have had this on my list of pre's - I can certainly see what people mean by a lack of headroom as much of what was played sounded quite muddy and blown out to me.
I never understood why a top notch company like UA would put something as cheesy as a 5 position switch on an input gain control. I'll stick with the 4-710d with all it's awesome options.
I loved this video. I own an AKG C414 XLII as well and was considering this unit as my next purchase so it was the perfect demonstration for me. Although our conditions are closest to being the same I appreciated how you thoroughly went through each setting where the differences could easily be heard. Awesome video which makes me want to get this piece even more. It would be really cool if you had a video using the AKG with a UA 6176 as I am considering this as an option as well! Well done!
@Mechie1500 dude... relax! when he starts playing the bass you can hear the camera built in audio fading out, so my guess is that they used the camera only for the voice. If you wanna hear the voice going thru it you might wanna check their other vid, but beware, if this one got you mad that one is gonna piss you off
@Mechie1500 Do you really think someone who has an audio gear show would run the audio through the camera? Did you even notice the air noise die when he started playing? Retard.
This was the first mic pre I bought. Expensive. But you hear the quality. Don't record Fodera bass with it. The valve harmonics destroy the unique Fodera character.
I dont like the distortion. You pay such a price for clean sound...
It's easy to mangle your sound if you don't know what you're doing and this sure does mangle. For bass back off on the rotary gain to -5 and keep the main level above 8 at all times. Be gentle with the compression and use gain accordingly so that the signal going into your power amp isn't too hot. You should also mention that for the high-z input the 47K is for active and 2.2M is for passive basses. Otherwise OK

These demos should be done by good players- on instruments that everyone knows...how about a good P-Bass!!! This demo doesn't really sell me on anything...
A shame he's not using an MTD or Ken Smith bass. His bass sounds cheapo. The LA-610 is a classy piece of gear but makes a cheesy bass sound just that.
Smafdy are you kidding me? he is using a compressor and it's the 610 at that. You dont need to hit 0dBu, That's called over compressing. Plus it's a touchy piece of gear and give a lot of good sounds with the ease of the knobs ever so slightly. I know this because I am a Mix Engineer and use this gear quite often.
wouldn't it make more sense to use the gain reduction mode on the vu when setting up the compressor? that kinda gave me a headache. good bass player though.
wow that sounds frickin fantastic

?? Did I miss something? Did he not play through it on bypass?...that would help a great deal in demonstrating it's sound.

How would this go for an acoustic Cello? This has Xlr Inputs dosnt it? I've heard people plugging the Cascade Fathead mics into it.

witch is better....this or the 6167?

Bad gain staging, dude. The output is barely even getting to -10. It should be hitting 0dB or above.
