Oh but so much fun! Those of us who play trumpet love this symphony for very good reason. As you can see it's like Tchaikovsky's personal gift to trumpet players....
Needless to say, the Vienna Philharmonic back in 1984 could still easily be considered the top orchestra in the world. Even today, despite various debates and standards it is still ranked as the top orchestra in the world. Karajan just found more power with the Berliners, his choice of the Berliners over the Vienna Philharmonic, was much more a personal choice than a musical one.
Bernard Haitink once stated that the Berlliners were the more 'masculin' orchestra and the Viennese more 'feminine'. Not a bad comparison when you realise that the Berlin sound is more muscular and the Vienna sound more flexible and transparent.
Get a grip (both of you), and discuss the video. Personal issues or problems should be dealt with away from a public forum.
If you care to discuss the music instead of wasting wall space, go right ahead. If not, keep comments to yourselves please, so I don't have to go pages back to find good, interesting responses.
This is just funny. Karajan doesn't posess Bernstein's passion. Just listen to both conduct Egmont. Plus music is not a sport, one cant really have higher, faster and father. I'm Russian, and a daughter of one of Russia's top 10 conductors, trust me in the spirit of the piece its well done.
This is one of my favorite symphonic finales. Our community orchestra performed this back in '93. It was the first time I relaxed and played without letting technically difficult passages intimidate me. It made the concert a lot more fun for me. To think..I had been playing about 21 years at the point. lol
yes, I remember that performance! it was the highpoint of the Nowheresville Symphony Orchestra and Kazoo Band in 1993 ... those were truly your glory years!!

Keep your juvenille comments to yourself. Music should trigger a good memory. It doesn't mean one lives in the past. Perhaps if you had any significant moments in your meaningless life, you wouldn't take pleasure in trashing my good memories...or anyone elses. Grow up!

I am not the only one who needs to get a grip young man. This was a nice thread until you chose to poke fun at a fond musical memory. In other words, it was your lack of manners that started this exchange. It is your arrogance that fuels its continuation. The sooner you come to that realization, the sooner this exchange will end.
yes, that is one possible way this exchange will come to an end ... but since that's not likely to happen, let me suggest an alternate way it might end: for the first time in his life an old man resists the urge to always have to have the last word!!
For this old man it is not a matter of having the last word. It has everything to do with reminding young people to chose their words carefully. In your case it is clear you do not realize that you brought this situation on yourself. Yes I could just walk away. I've done it numerous times before. I'm just not in the mood to help justify your arrogance. Take your own advice. If you reply with another snide comment this exchange will continue. The choice is yours.
yeah - I sorta guessed you didn't have that degree of self-control ...
now you're the self-appointed reminder of the young?!?! now THAT is arrogance personified!!
hahaha! -- give up, old man ... I am younger, have much more free time and am not likely to have my internet privledges abruptly terminated like you do every night when they announce "lights out" at your nursing home and you have to toddle back to your little cell for your nightly prune juice cocktail
And you wonder why this exchange has continued you immature, arrogant twit. Since you probably don't have many friends I guess you are secretly enjoying this. The sad part is that you see this as a battle of wits. Unfortuantely, this is probably not a fair fight. I may be old but you are not equipped to endure a battle with me. Your immaturity will expose your stupidity every time.
Karajan was natural for Tchaikovsky. He made many recordings of this symphony either with Wiener Phil. or Berliner Phil. all of them are among the finest.
I watched a Mravinsky performance on TV some time ago.... it had nothing to do with karajan's conducting but it was as amazing! This symphony is overwhelming!
Mravinsky is not recommended to watch on TV, is better live in the Concert Hall :) Don't like you stamp "it had nothing to do with karajan's conducting". Karajan have "nothing to do" with Mravinsky's tutti intensive dramatic culmination just before the brass march, for example. No judge, both are great.
I remember Evgeni Aleksandrovich, he was my fathers mentor. I remember when he was rehearsing the Shostakoviches 5th for his 70th jubilee concert at the Leningrad Philharmonic, I was there with my mother. At the end Mravinsky went down and down onto his score and finally dropped his arms. His wife ran towards him in panic, yelling, Zhenya, Zhenya..He lifted his head somwhat and said:"Be quiet, you fool i was doing a piano".
I am happy because I an going to attend a concert next year in Paris where the WP will perform Tschaikowsky 5th conducted by Gergiev. I am not fan at all of the conductor but I think it is going to be a great moment like every time I have attended WP concerts in Paris.
I like this concert a lot! It is karajan and the Wiener philharmoniker! What else could one ask? I like the timpanist a lot - Roland Altmann - for being so noble in his playing that one can hear beat (check him in Mozart Coronation Mass with Karajan too!).
AWESOME performance although they give the lower strings no credit when they get the heck of triplets which is incredibly hard. All the Brass and Woodwinds know though LOL it's a great piece one of my favorites especially the second movement of this symphony.......... Listen to his last symphony he wrote too He knew he was going to die but he didn't name every symphony he wrote sure little russian etc but Symphony No 6 Pathotique,
such an amazing production! I absolutely adore Karajan!I am sure some of the instruments had battle scares after this! Some of those violinists look so old im surprised they didnt have a heart attack.
WONDERFUL MUSIC WITH AN ASTONISHING FINALE THAT ONLY A GREAT GENIUS AS TCHAIKOVSKY CUOLD FIND TO END THIS BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART.
