  • Aint it funny how ya dont really need to be a first class singer to be awesome. John never fails to make the hairs on my arms stand on end! This song is so melancholy, i feel as though im looking at his life through his eyes when i listen to it. The same feeling i get when i hear Chet Atkins singing " Still cant say goodbye". Now thats a propper tear jerker.

  • @siddyx ...always thought, john , was singing about my problems....and i've got a few....lol..every album...was. for me......but now. i know john ...much too clever..he reached millions......just like a forgotten dream......john's words.....wow.....old people just grow lonesome............magic...

  • I hope the new generation grabs a hold of some real life down to earth music and carries it forward so that this doesn't fizzle out.

  • yes, beautiful...and reading all the comments is like sitting with old friends

  • This is perhaps one of the most beautiful renditions of what is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs in the world. Not enough people even know who John is.

  • @didjndrums I couldn't agree more. This song, and John Prine (though we are all getting old) never get old.

  • Ahh memories of times n folks !

  • @siddyx ...yes. indeed.. memories...

  • Why does he look precisely as I expected him too look?

  • saw JP in KCMO last night and have been listening to his music for a long time. As I have aged, this song has changed in its meaning to me. First, it was 'be kind to older people because its a kind thing to do'. Later it's 'these are my aging parents he's talking about' and then finally 'this will be me and all of us eventually'.

  • @LSMO57 .. yes..i agree with your sentiments.....thanks for comment..

  • Epic

  • Saw John in concert Saturday in Phoenix. This song was the highlight in my opinion.

    Today is World Hello Day.

  • Another song that will break your heart is "Setting alone in an old rocking chair".... I only listen to it when I don't mind crying....

  • Man, I think that is so sad.... But wonderful.... Thank you for your post.

I'm going to see him tonight and I hope he does this song.

    Thanks again.

  • Nice..

  • when You gonna come back to Fla. And do us again?? John. 10/10/??

  • Wow!! I have to say ' That is my favorite song of all times' WoW luv Lora Taylor

  • I'm a Presbyterian pastor who cares deeply about our aging parishioners. This song gets me right in the gut every time I hear it. Thanks for posting this!

  • @fun457

It was from Prine's Sessions at West 54th DVD. I believe it was recorded in 2001 and is still available to purchase from Amazon.

  • @shiggypoo .. yes.. and everybody should buy a copy......

  • Such a great song. Great live performance of it. TY so much!

  • Being older doesn't ain't so bad, when you still have the music.

  • @jimmylee123able .....yes...you are right.......bring old age on......ha ha ha .we can deal with it.......old trees just get stronger....

  • @im4out Oh no there abother branch!

  • Do Whacka Do

Money and freedom are twin angels

    You take care of them

    They take care of you

And in the words of the poets

    Do whacka do whacka do

    M.S. Morrison

  • VERY BEAUTIFUL SONG from John Prine.

Where was this concert played, and when?

    Thomas

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN!

  • @checkbox99

Think of the point as being able to listen to songs such as this one. We'll all have plenty of time not to listen to them when we're dead, so take advantage of the opportunity while we're still breathing.

  • @SRCervecero58 Eye has not seen and hear has not heard What God has laid in store for us!! "One Glad Morning"

  • @checkbox99

I don't think we get to decide the point. I think the ones we leave behind get to decide the point. I've had to go on many times where I didn't think I could. There are people today that are glad that I did. I had professional help. Please, reach out to someone. Please, don't think there isn't a point.

  • Song got to me when it first came out and I can hardly breath listening to it today.

  • brought tears back from all the passing years... i sang this song back in the 80's..saw John and Bonnie in concert.. wow... thank God for memories..Hello in there ya'll!! God bless U

  • been listening to this song for many years. It has led me to many "new" old friends. John Prine sings the truth. He is so right on about life...now and even 40 years ago.

  • use this song when teaching health and social care which basically covers the 7 ages of man every class is enllightened

  • Went to the nursing home to see my daddy today...this song is always in my head when I go there. I always say "Hello in there" to everyone, even though most of them can't talk back...I can see in their eyes they appreciate a kind word from even a stranger.

  • @afgreyparrot yes, my friend. my mum was also in a nursing home, for a short while. before she passed away. the nursing staff always said hello in there to her every day..... and also hello in there to me every time i visited. such wonderful people.......

  • Without a doubt one of the most heart wrenching songs ever created. Just so intense, and yet so simple in it's message.

  • went to a John Prine and Arlo Guthrie concert eons ago and still am pissed off at arriving and finding out that Guthrie was the headliner. about 30 minutes of Prine and what seemed like 3hours of Alice's Restaraunt. Prine is no doubt the most literate ex-mailman on the planet

  • His best song - written in his mid 20's ! such maturity

  • i love this song, such a reflection on life, hello to you all

  • Thanks to the one posting this. John and Iris were near me, up in Sioux City IA here just a month ago, but I thought I had to be here instead. Having this here is some compensation, I still got the chills when he had finished the song.

  • always tickle the keyboard for this song when i have dialed all the numbers in my little black book,,,and voicemail is my only companion 2 night....mr prine,,i thank you...

  • a wrenching, tender song... just beautiful

  • Bette Midlers version definitely tuggs at the heart strings more, but still a good version

  • wha a lovely song, being old is the new young, and to paraphrase another great song writer i wouldn,t trade my future with anyone,

    chame9707

  • @chame9707 ..what a great comment ...hello in there.

  • I love this man, a GREAT american song writer.

  • Sooo Good!

  • I love John Prine

  • Beautiful. Sessions at West 54th does it again. An American Songwriter icon. Love him. Thanks for posting.

  • Man it just dosn't get much better than this.

  • @misspussycatify ...... yes.... indeed . you're correct. thanks for watching.

  • @misspussycatify he is by far the greatest folk singer EVER!!!.......and yes that includes dylan

  • I still don't know what 4 ???????????

  • @CactassDupree ...it's been years since the kids have grown...left us alone...........it don't matter anymore...

  • at last! proper footage with a tripod! Highly enjoyable, subdued arrangement with a lot of space and with the vocal and acoustic guitar firmly in the front seat.

  • All of his songs have so much meaning to me... Unreal.... My husband and i had so much fun listening to his music... Hello in there ;-)

  • I love John Prine

  • i still love this song, eventhough i live in a home........not fun at times.... but YouTube

    keeps me going

    thanks

  • John Prine has to be one of the best kept song-writing secrets of all time.

  • File this one under "Have them in the palm of your hand". Absolutely beautiful. If you don't well up at this one, you don't have a soul.

  • I first heard this song on Bette Midler's "Live from Cleveland" in the 1970's... it ripped my heart apart and left me soaked with tears... ever since then I've tried to make eye contact with old people, greet them, smile at them... as I look in the mirror these days I realize, soon I will be "old people"... will you do the same?

  • @lochridgegirl ...you know......i've been listening to this song for about forty years.....i'm sixty now.......and guess what.......i think it's the young folk that need a hello in there.........and that's the truth......take it easy...lochridgegirl......and thanks for comment...

  • @im4out l, you are so right!

Love John Prine and all that he has created...

  • @lochridgegirl I sang this song in a raspy off-key voice in a performance school in Big Sur ten years ago and the song itself made it a success- it has guided my thoughts and actions since high school toward all people, and I love it so...

  • @lochridgegirl .... hello in there... bless you as you gracefully mellow with age... keith

  • Beautiful

  • Thanks for keeping this incredible version of a great song alive!

  • his voice never changes..gotta love that..grreat tunes.

  • God, I can remember hearing this on the radio in New York years ago. It was great then, it's great now.

  • Saw John In Wausau WI a while back - this song always brings a tear to my eye one of the best - GREAT show that Jason fellow is one of the best pickers i have ever heard -

We have an old guy in his 80s here in Stevens Point wi who goes around on a tricycle collecting aluminum cans - I always roll down the window and give him a shout

Hey Willie - he smiles an waves sometimes - then I simle too its nice

  • @getnospamm . tis a nice story......thanks..

  • @getnospamm ...I have been to every one of his concerts at The Grand Theater in Wausau, and taken my daughters to the last two.. His music touches me, and right now, I NEED someone to say "hello to ME..

  • Finally! A decently video of John Prine. This and Lake Marie are the only ones of any quality. Why doesn't someone tell John Prine that all the other crappy concert videos don't do him or his music justice? Let's get a ton more like this one online, NOW!

  • @dotubeinn ...hey, thanks for comment.....me, i'm kinda terrified if this gets too popular some big suit from a record co. will try and take it down......but then i remember oh boy records is john,s.......so hopefully this will stay........

  • i was sent here by mysteryseeker.....im not so sure what there trying to tell me... 0.o

  • Thank God for John Prine and his willingness to share his brilliance with us, unlike Bob Zimmerman Dylan( what a prick), Yknow Henry Ford invented the car but never took it off UTube. I don't know what Dylan's problem is but it's certainly not that people didn't buy his albums,,,,,Fuck you Robert, and you sucked in "The Last Waltz".

  • @purveyor24 ...well, jim, i'm sure your comments are gonna upset a few people....ha ha ha ...but your about john's willingness to share...... me... i got problems with sony and waener bros...greedy bastards....as if they haven't took enough money of us ever the years.......anyhoo have a nice day...

  • my best friesn first heard this song at14, she said from the time she heard John prine sing this song she was so touched she had to say hello to every old person that she know was alone. She just passed away this week at the age of 55. I will alway remember this througt her . Thank you to John prine for touching a 14 year old with such a profoung message

  • We can't change or stop aging, but we can help combat loneliness.

  • my gram passed away right at a year ago. She basically went down hill about 6 months prior, and she didn't know any family or friends anymore. I used to visit her and would play this song. She would smile and look at me as if she knew this song was about her. Would break my heart, but was something I would do for her every chance I got.

  • Couple of versions of this amazing song on youtube...this is one of the best...God Bless John Prine...brilliant songwriter and performer...

  • Not my favorite type of music but it beats today's bullshit

  • Absolutely Beautiful! I am deeply touched by this wonderful musical masterpiece.

  • @ladyhoopla1111 ..i'm glad john's touched your heart...........thanks for watching

  • I think you've gotta have some years on ya to really appreciate this song. Only John could write it and only John could sing it.

  • @c130alon.... yes, quite a few people over the years have played this.....but john's version still the best i've heard....

  • Hearing this 36 years ago changed my way of seeing old people. As a younger person I think I was like many who are afraid that it will happen to them, its a youthful denial.Just a smile to a person who really is there is a great help.

  • @RasMajnouni You sure got that right, I like to go play music at nursing homes, watch them old folks smile, there ain't no better feeling in the world, yeah I've been listening to John since the early 70s myself. good to see he has changed a lot of peoples lives just with his words and music!

  • @rickatica That just might be the best way of easing an old person's pain. I can't play anything but I know people who go and do that here in Israel. That which you do is giving spiritual life from yourself to others. G-D Bless You!!!

  • hello from Kentucky in memory of Alice Mae Jarvis

  • A simply beautiful song .....

  • I NEVER MISSED HIM WHEN HE CAME TO ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.............EVERY SHOW WAS A GREAT ONE...REMEMBER A GUY SAYING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN...ALMOST TO THE POINT OF RUINING THE SHOW (IF THAT'S POSSIBLE) I CAN''T BELIEVE IT..i CAN'T BELIEVE IT...IT REALLY IS JOHN PRINE....AFTER A LOT OF THIS...JOHN JUST LOOKED AT HIM AND SAID......BELIEVE IT !!!!! LOL......GUESS YA WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE BEEN THERE!!!!!

  • @MSJUSTME1960 Hello...

  • @MSJUSTME1960 Stop screaming. We can 'hear' you just fine.

  • i AM 50.........THIS IS MUSIC TO MY EARS..BUT ......I REMEMBER BEING 20 AND HEARING THIS SONG AND CRYING THINKING HOW LONELY THOSE PEOPLE MUST BE AND HOW MR. PRINE HAD SANG IT SO TRUE WITH HIS WORDS AND MUSIC...........NOW I AM HERE...MY KIDS ARE GROWN AND I AM ALONE...WAITING FOR SOME ONE TO LOOK PAST THESE HOLLOW EYES AND JUST SAY HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MSJUSTME1960 Hi =) Hang in there. I know you're beautiful.

  • @MSJUSTME1960 Hi out there..... :-)

  • I have been a Prine fan since the 70's. Been playing his tunes on my own guitar since then we have aged, the songs have held their own.

  • John Prine has been a fav of mine for over 30 years. Anyone holding grudges against their parents for wrongs real or imagined... give it up, get over it and reconcile before it is too late. Tell them Hello in there!

  • It's about . . . , everything.

  • @walterncool ...yes indeed..

  • he is ugly

  • Saw JP, here in the great Midwest city of Clear Water, about a month ago and it was great. I especially enjoyed this song - he and his band nailed it.

  • @rckymtnhighs glad you saw john.....everyone should.. : )

  • I love this song, it makes me think of my mom at the Nursing Home in the Alz. Ward.

So many older folks are forgotten, like they don't matter, I often cry when I hear this, thanks for posting it...adding to my favorites,

  • @MrJojogun ...woof woof grrr woof.....that means hello in there : )

  • @im4out OMG ur funny

  • Awesome! Now I need a tissue...

  • @jet51100 . i've used a lot over the years to john's songs....

  • I love this song!

  • rolling stone does those issues about the 100 greatest songs. this should be in the top ten. i've listened to it for over forty years and it never gets old. yes, the sixties was about great music and john prine was one of the best

  • this is one of the greatest songs of all time. i've been listening to it for about forty years and it never gets old. john may not be as prolific as some but at his best he can't be beat.

  • Just Goddamned BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

  • he's in a league all my hime self .matched my no other

  • Can't wait to see him tomorrow night!!! What a story teller. One of the best.

  • fantastic..!!!!!

  • @caferive ....yes exactly......thanks for watching..

  • Nobody can write a sad song like John Prine. Nobody

  • @Ringowasprettygood wrong. Tom Waits writes the best ballads you will ever hear.

  • @RenoRaider True ...but I can drink with Tom ....but sometimes I weep with John.

  • goosebumps.... still gives me goosebumps. thanks, john prine.

  • What was really interesting is that all the comments (save a few) were about themselves and their lives; nothing to do with what the songs were really talking about in the first place. God Bless the world for John Prine.

  • im4out...THANK YOU!

  • This is one of the very best songs ever written. Thanks.

  • I and you, have heard so many songs in our lives, but this is one of the best that hits my heart.
