i remember i hated this. i felt shaq was the pushing players & yet they would call fouls on the other guy i would think well what are they supposed to do run away from him?
@imsljr420 You are absolutely correct. There is no way you can guard a guy doing that. Mutumbo is a stat DPOY but not a true physical one. And with shaq doing this?
@mikenotnumberone1 : but im sure as a Laker fan you were enjoying the fact that you guys were winning championships....i think cost is upset because this was against his team lol
@imsljr420 Yes..and I love rubbing that into him too :) I did enjoy watching shaq do that at that time..but was concerned. I thought he was going to hurt someone..but I also felt what was mutumbo doing sticking his face in there for? LOL I personally think Kobe should have tried to be more like Magic vs Jordan.
@imsljr420 This would have kept the two together for longer and around 2003 is when I thought shaq should have eased up and gave the team over to kobe..this transition would have led to at least 2-3 more titles together. Kobe still could have managed 25-28 ppg but focused more on assisting and defending. And then going for it in the 4th quarters. I blame a lot of this on: early Lakers management..especially del harris and Phil Jackson. Phil never worked them out and found peace.
@costcordero2 It is almost sad. I watched Mutumbo stop teams..but he is not the lateral quick footed defender like robinson or Hakeem was. And he was not physical. That is why I always look at matchups..throw stats out the window here..as it to me means nothing when you are getting shaq-fu in the grill for 48 minutes. Mutumbo needed the extra large shammy...to absorb all those gangsta blows by the DADDEEEEE! LOL
Shaq may have handled Mutumbo in the finals and I give Mutumbo a lot of respect
for playing him hard but let's face it, Shaq never had to worry about Mutumbo goin off on the offensive end. Shaq just didn't have to work hard defensively against any center during the post 2000 era. Robinson, Hakeem,Sabonis were the most skilled offensive centers and by this time they were well passed their prime. Give credit to Shaq for dominating but he often could take the night off defensively against bigs.
If someone is more dominant... They are better! I have never seen a player not dominate but say they are better... Production... Jordan was a dominant shooting guard, kobe was a dominant shooting guard, shaq dominant center, Dwight Howard dominant.... Now tell me where bishop tutu from Africa fits in... Not with them... Good center at best, great shot blocker... That's it
Why does everybody keep saying dikembe had better defense... If he did nice, but shaq had better offense, shaq was a more athletic, stronger, better all around player then him... I never saw dikembe take over a game, glorified role player defensively
Who cares if it was his size or not that made him better than dikembe. Look at the stats. Shaq wasn't the best defender but you have to say he was changin shots when people came in there and if the offensive person wanted a foul shaq gave it to them but made sure they wouldn't want to do it again. It won him 4 championship 2 more than hakeem if I'm not mistaken. So don't say he overrated or it was his size. Stats and championships is all that counts.
That was Shaqs signature cheap shot, he was one of the greatest EVER but that cheap clear out was unstoppable and boosted him to be elite. If they called that foul on him during his career he is far less dominant.
fuck that. they let shaq do whatever this series. throwin bo's, traveling every other possession, and a few times he even let it go past the 24 second shot clock. ass
jordan didnt make it without pippen, duncan without robinson, wade without shaq. the same on kobe and shaq. KOBE has 5 five rings because he's great. Shaq was also lucky with the lakers. kamown!
Mutombo is the man!!! look how he gets elbowed and just continues to play and its not just any player its freakin Shaq!!!. If any player nowadays gets elbowed they would just stop and starts checking if theres blood knowing perfectly well that there is none.
@k460732 Mutumbo was a horse...would challenge anything...The only thing that Shaq lived off was pure size..He's not a better defender than Mutombo...Tim Duncan is way better than Shaq...Hakeem too.
@MrSlik25 Although I do think Shaq was an excellent player in his prime...I believe he is overrated. I have to agree with you obviously, that Mutombo was a better defender. & Definitely Tim Duncan was a better player than Shaq, without any argument. Keep in mind that they played during the same era and AT LEAST 2 of Shaq's championships were manufactured, I think his Orlando team was better than his Lakers teams. You cant say such a thing against Tim Duncan who never switched teams.
Being a die-hard Sixers fan, I remember this series well. The team was SUPER popular that year in the Philadelphia area. My two memories of those finals are Shaq OWNING Mutombo like a bitch every chance he had. My other memory of that series is Allen Iverson stepping over a fallen Lue in Game 1. The Lakers we're so good that year, as a Sixers fan I was happy we won at least one game. I believe it was the first time the Kobe/Shaq duo was ever beat in the playoffs.
Wow I never noticed this when I watched when I was 12. But Jesus Christ the Sixers got screwed in this series. Shaq probably committed 15 offensive fouls for the entire series and got away with them all. Not to knock Shaq because honestly that was his team (NOT KOBE'S) but the referees really turned a blind eye to the 3 peat Lakers. (See Game 6 2002 Kings-Lakers)
Dikembe is a warrior look at 30sec. He get's an elbow that would knock erbody of there feet. And he still goes for the swat! Btw prime shaq owns Dwight!
@smartyelee64 yeah man they do ive gon to a whole bucnh of shaq highlights and all you see is people hating on shaq saying that howard is way better.. i always tell them obviously you didnt say a prime shaq that carried the lakers to three chmpaionships...and hell yea i totaly agree with you
dikembe was a grat defensive payer shaq in hhis prime was just unstoppable thats y hate all these 15 year olds sayin howard is better than shaq.. howard in his prime is barely better than a post prime shaq come on kids
@tokinblckgie It was a two was street with Shaq. He got away with a lot of no calls like that but the other team was allowed to beat him up just as bad. Seriously, look at any "hack a Shaq" game. They didn't just give him hard fouls, they pretty much tackled him every play with thing that would be flagrant fouls to any one else in the league.
@Freshustle excuse me? really it was only shaq?? Are you sure? Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway had nothing to do with that? He avg'd 25.5 pts 4.8 rbds 8.0asts 1.0stl 0.8blk's But he's a nobody i guess. all better than his regular season stats for that season. So no he didnt get to any finals by himself. He always had a guard with him. And for that matter they got swept anyway. No one wins by themselves lebrons the only to get to finals by himself in recent memory and he got swept
@ridore9 Hmmmm....please refresh my memory wasn't Penny injury prone? And Didn't that guy...ugh.....what's his name? Oh yea that Jordan guy play in the east?
@Freshustle is there a point to that statement? Hardaway played in that one final and played very well too. And umm hello jordan didnt win without pippen. Shaq has never made it to the finals w/o a wing player helping him. Every team needs 2/3 stars...thats my point
@Solomonreborn U Kobe haters never fail to amaze me like c'moon Pau was a mediocre PF nd only had one allstar in 7 years....but he came to LA nd became a better player...he never won a playoffs game in Memphis...Pau never averaged more than 19PPG for da lakers so far so gimme a break
single handedly? are you saying horace grant and penny hardaway are nothing? 4-0 isn't so great in the finals either, last time i checked. It just means they had a weak eastern conference.
you're making an unfair comparison. it's clear that kobe led the lakers while they won the two championships. maybe shaq "led" the team, but 4-0 isn't so great.
All time belongs with Kareem Abdul Jabaar.
And I never said shaq wasn't good; he just needed kobe. kobe has as much claim to the title.
@musiccritic10 Yep. Single handedly. Penny was great...before injuries. and shaq carried that team as well 1996, after Shaq left, what happened to Penny? Had a nice run but flopped next full season w/o shaq. and obviously left to go do bigger and better things. But i will say that Penny was 10009897 times better than Kobe as a sidekick.
Dude that was because of his injuries and it was too difficult for him to come back. In 1996, they lost to the Bulls and they used Penny A LOT.
NBA player of the month? All-Star starter?
And they couldn't win.
The reason the Lakers didn't win from 96-99 was Kobe was developing. Surprise Surprise! After three years they finally won... unless you're saying it was Shaq who improved during this time...
@musiccritic10 My Point exactly Shaq left and the went downhill. Kobe regardless of improving or not was not the cause of the Lakers 3-peat. So are you telling me that the 2009 Magic got to the finals because of Hedo Turkgolu? or was it because of Dwight Howard? Shaq was THE man. Kobe offensive skills may have improved a smidget during that time, but passing and defense were a joke
It's not because Shaq left; it's because Penny got injured.
Yeah it was.
Hedo Turkoglu is a joke... I think you're making an unfair comparison. The reason Howard got to the finals was pietrus, rashard, etc. It was his team, not him.
Proof? Is he in the Finals this year? Or last year? and guess which teams those other guys are on? not the magic.
first of all, that's an opinion. but just because his game wasn't fully developed does not mean he can't lead a team(lebron james early)
@musiccritic10 Only reshard lewis isn't on the team. But howard is the only 3 peat DPOY. and the best big man in the game. his team also let him down. they wouldnt be in the playoffs w/o D12. same with LBJ. It is fair comparison because they weren't swept in the finals by. L.A. and Dwight is in the position Shaq was.
This is not basketball it is boxing or i dont know, there cant be any physical contact in basketball why wasnt any techs called its unsportsmanlike playing, i consider Dikembe better than shaq.
r32stawka, I love basketball. I am only 5'5 and I am able to dunk! I just took the training workout at "50inch vertical (dot) com" - you can probably do it too
yoyo r32stawka, if you want to develop in basketball, you have got to start following a legit training plan. I used the famous nba training plan here | 50 inch vertical [dot] com |. I didn t even tell this to my basketball teammates yet hehe
This is exactly why I hated Shaq's game back in the days. Don't get me wrong. Shaq is a great player, unbelievably agile and skilled. The problem is the league allowed him to get away with so much that he became the most dominant player to ever grace the league. I've seen so many so many plays where he would elbow the defender in the face and getting 3-point plays in return.
@chilibun Thats is very true... but Shaq also took a beating when he played. People would foul him non stop but because he was damn near 400lbs and he didnt beg for calls like other players. Most wernt called, lets face it a 220lb Guard running full speed into him wouldnt even budge him. He got away with alot, but so did everyone he played against!!!
@SlapNutsPoonJab I don't blame Shaq for getting all the calls, but that doesn't change the fact that he did, especially in the playoffs. I remember watching Sabonis, Robinson, Divacs, and Mutumbo all getting elbowed in the head and somehow got called for fouls. I hate to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I definitely believe the league (Stern) intentionally gave advantages to the Lakers because he wanted them to be the face of the NBA, similar to how the MJ Bulls were.
@chilibun No doubt he got away with alot... but in all of those games you mentioned I can promiss you that you will also see all of those players beating up on Shaq as well. Players use to drive their shoulders/elbows into him as hard as they could trying to move his 400lb body. For every thing he got away with there were just as many times that the opponets would have been called had it been anyone other than the Diesel!!!
@chilibun There is no conspiricy... it just comes down to the ref's judgement. As a Nuggets fan I've seen Kobe get calls where our players never actually touched him. But if he slips and falls down after a jump shot. More times than not the ref gives the super start the benifit of the doubt over some unknown bench player. The bigger the superstars rep, the more love they get from the refs. No ref wants to be responsible and their name in the papers for fouling out an elite player!!!
@SlapNutsPoonJab I don't know about that. If you really took a long look at some of the Lakers playoffs series, like vs. Blazers in 00 or vs. Kings in 02, the Lakers got away with so much while the other team gets called for ticky tack fouls. And of course the Tim Donaghy arrest doesn't help the NBA's credibility. I'm not saying that the NBA is definitely fixed, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was, especially the Lakers vs Kings in 02. The Kings were so robbed.
O'Neal was also voted the 1999–2000 regular season Most Valuable Player, coming just one vote short of becoming the first unanimous MVP in NBA history
It's funny because years later when Shaq was on the heat and they lost in the first round to the bulls he admitted to hitting Mutombo on purpose. He was bitching about how he doesn't get the calls he used to. He said 'No one cared when I was hitting Mutombo in the face on purpose'
r32stawka blah man, this vid is why I like NBA even though it has its issues. I am doing this training course that's utilized even by NBA players - | 50 inch vertical [dot] com | - I am already jumping higher and leading my team on the court!
r32stawka I am 5 6 and I dunk nonstop. I m in my school's varsity team and my dunking excites everyone (the girls haha). It was seriously really simple, I just followed the unique training program over at 50 inch vertical (dot) com - anyone can do it
those were the good days where big bodies were allowed to bang and lift opposing defenders off the ground with their bodies without it being a foul. the only reason the elbows weren't fouls was because mutumbo didn't try to sell it.
so why are you saying this is why he's the greatest center of all time. yes he's dominant and can dunk on people...but i will not agree that THIS VIDEO shows how good he is. clearing out people and elbowing in the face, then having a free shot at a dunk doesn't show you're good. i guess all i have to do is shoot him in the face and then score, then id be even better!!
@JASM4collection That is common thinking of a man who has never played basketball or other sports, but regularly observes the all time statistics instead...
@JASM4collection don't be fuckin foolish. U wanna see proof watch him get annihilated by a far superior center with a far superior nickname when they both played for far superior teams in the mid 90s, after said center manhandled a buncha other all time big men.
The funny thing is now a days Shaq is getting whistled right and left for plays like this. But because he was wearing a Fakers jersey he could do no wrong.
The NBA would more fans, and be the top sport in the world if we had more warriors like Mutumbo playing the game, instead of this hip-hop generation flashy, dunk loving bufoons. Not that the two ideas are mutually exclusive.
r32stawka, I love basketball. I am only 5'6 and I can dunk! I simply took this training plan at "50inch vertical [dot] com" - you can probably do it too

All those elbows should've been fouls... Gotta love those biased refs.
tokinblckgie 1 year ago
@tokinblckgie It was a two was street with Shaq. He got away with a lot of no calls like that but the other team was allowed to beat him up just as bad. Seriously, look at any "hack a Shaq" game. They didn't just give him hard fouls, they pretty much tackled him every play with thing that would be flagrant fouls to any one else in the league.

@Freshustle yeah cuz shaq had rings in orlando? where kobe wasnt there?
ridore9 11 months ago
@ridore9 Yea at least he got to a finals by himself while Kobe.....(checks).....oh...... He hasn't seen the 3rd round without shaq or Pau Gasol.
Freshustle 11 months ago
@Freshustle excuse me? really it was only shaq?? Are you sure? Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway had nothing to do with that? He avg'd 25.5 pts 4.8 rbds 8.0asts 1.0stl 0.8blk's But he's a nobody i guess. all better than his regular season stats for that season. So no he didnt get to any finals by himself. He always had a guard with him. And for that matter they got swept anyway. No one wins by themselves lebrons the only to get to finals by himself in recent memory and he got swept
ridore9 11 months ago
@ridore9 Hmmmm....please refresh my memory wasn't Penny injury prone? And Didn't that guy...ugh.....what's his name? Oh yea that Jordan guy play in the east?
Freshustle 11 months ago
@Freshustle is there a point to that statement? Hardaway played in that one final and played very well too. And umm hello jordan didnt win without pippen. Shaq has never made it to the finals w/o a wing player helping him. Every team needs 2/3 stars...thats my point
ridore9 11 months ago
@ridore9 yeah, that jordan guy was kind of a big deal

shaq could never have won those w/o kobe.
proof: did he ever win with orlando? sure he made it to the finals... once.
okay, shaq won it with wade.
and kobe won it without shaq... TWICE.
musiccritic10 9 months ago
@musiccritic10 Well guess what Shaq single handedly took the Magic to the finals
Has Kobe even led the Lakers past the 2nd round?
no.
And whats you're point That Kobe won 2 w/o Shaq
He had Pau Gasol the most skilled big man in the league also d wade won 0 w/o shaq it works both ways
BUT, regardless, Shaq was the most dominant big man in that Era and possible of all time, and the MVP
while kobe was coming off the bench, and replaced by tyron lue for defensive purposes because he cant guard AI
Freshustle 9 months ago
@Freshustle
single handedly? are you saying horace grant and penny hardaway are nothing? 4-0 isn't so great in the finals either, last time i checked. It just means they had a weak eastern conference.
you're making an unfair comparison. it's clear that kobe led the lakers while they won the two championships. maybe shaq "led" the team, but 4-0 isn't so great.
All time belongs with Kareem Abdul Jabaar.
And I never said shaq wasn't good; he just needed kobe. kobe has as much claim to the title.
musiccritic10 8 months ago
@musiccritic10 Yep. Single handedly. Penny was great...before injuries. and shaq carried that team as well 1996, after Shaq left, what happened to Penny? Had a nice run but flopped next full season w/o shaq. and obviously left to go do bigger and better things. But i will say that Penny was 10009897 times better than Kobe as a sidekick.
Freshustle 8 months ago
@Freshustle
After three years they finally won... unless you're saying it was Shaq who improved during this time...
musiccritic10 8 months ago
@musiccritic10 My Point exactly Shaq left and the went downhill. Kobe regardless of improving or not was not the cause of the Lakers 3-peat. So are you telling me that the 2009 Magic got to the finals because of Hedo Turkgolu? or was it because of Dwight Howard? Shaq was THE man. Kobe offensive skills may have improved a smidget during that time, but passing and defense were a joke
Freshustle 8 months ago
@Freshustle
Or last year? and guess which teams those other guys are on? not the magic.
first of all, that's an opinion. but just because his game wasn't fully developed does not mean he can't lead a team(lebron james early)
musiccritic10 8 months ago
@musiccritic10 Only reshard lewis isn't on the team. But howard is the only 3 peat DPOY. and the best big man in the game. his team also let him down. they wouldnt be in the playoffs w/o D12. same with LBJ. It is fair comparison because they weren't swept in the finals by. L.A. and Dwight is in the position Shaq was.

The Shaq that smiles back.............
PacificBoomer 1 year ago
This is exactly why I hated Shaq's game back in the days. Don't get me wrong. Shaq is a great player, unbelievably agile and skilled. The problem is the league allowed him to get away with so much that he became the most dominant player to ever grace the league. I've seen so many so many plays where he would elbow the defender in the face and getting 3-point plays in return.
chilibun 1 year ago
@chilibun Thats is very true... but Shaq also took a beating when he played. People would foul him non stop but because he was damn near 400lbs and he didnt beg for calls like other players. Most wernt called, lets face it a 220lb Guard running full speed into him wouldnt even budge him. He got away with alot, but so did everyone he played against!!!
SlapNutsPoonJab 1 year ago
@SlapNutsPoonJab I don't blame Shaq for getting all the calls, but that doesn't change the fact that he did, especially in the playoffs. I remember watching Sabonis, Robinson, Divacs, and Mutumbo all getting elbowed in the head and somehow got called for fouls. I hate to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I definitely believe the league (Stern) intentionally gave advantages to the Lakers because he wanted them to be the face of the NBA, similar to how the MJ Bulls were.
chilibun 1 year ago
@chilibun No doubt he got away with alot... but in all of those games you mentioned I can promiss you that you will also see all of those players beating up on Shaq as well. Players use to drive their shoulders/elbows into him as hard as they could trying to move his 400lb body. For every thing he got away with there were just as many times that the opponets would have been called had it been anyone other than the Diesel!!!
SlapNutsPoonJab 1 year ago
@chilibun There is no conspiricy... it just comes down to the ref's judgement. As a Nuggets fan I've seen Kobe get calls where our players never actually touched him. But if he slips and falls down after a jump shot. More times than not the ref gives the super start the benifit of the doubt over some unknown bench player. The bigger the superstars rep, the more love they get from the refs. No ref wants to be responsible and their name in the papers for fouling out an elite player!!!
SlapNutsPoonJab 1 year ago
@SlapNutsPoonJab I don't know about that. If you really took a long look at some of the Lakers playoffs series, like vs. Blazers in 00 or vs. Kings in 02, the Lakers got away with so much while the other team gets called for ticky tack fouls. And of course the Tim Donaghy arrest doesn't help the NBA's credibility. I'm not saying that the NBA is definitely fixed, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was, especially the Lakers vs Kings in 02. The Kings were so robbed.

It's funny because years later when Shaq was on the heat and they lost in the first round to the bulls he admitted to hitting Mutombo on purpose. He was bitching about how he doesn't get the calls he used to. He said 'No one cared when I was hitting Mutombo in the face on purpose'

those were the good days where big bodies were allowed to bang and lift opposing defenders off the ground with their bodies without it being a foul. the only reason the elbows weren't fouls was because mutumbo didn't try to sell it.

Shaq was the only reason I liked LA. Hate them now =)

so why are you saying this is why he's the greatest center of all time. yes he's dominant and can dunk on people...but i will not agree that THIS VIDEO shows how good he is. clearing out people and elbowing in the face, then having a free shot at a dunk doesn't show you're good. i guess all i have to do is shoot him in the face and then score, then id be even better!!
