@21trillion If you read Frederick Douglas speech in Chicago on Haiti, you will find out that America's involvement in Haiti spans more than 150 years. Aristide would not play ball with the US, France and Canada. When you have major world powers controlling and taking natural resources from a small tiny country such as Haiti, you need to use diplomacy to get your country to develop. In other words, you have to know how to play ball where you can get an edge and Haiti can benefit.

@moiseali Let me give you an example of a mistake made by Aristide. 30 years ago Haiti produced its own food and exported thanks to protective barriers. In 1994 after his ouster he wanted to get back in power so bad that he agreed to cut the rice tariff to 3 percent and removed the protective barriers for imports. Impoverished farmers unable to compete with the billions of dollars in subsidies paid by the U.S. to its growers abandoned their farms and congested the capital.

Mind you, the protective import barriers were not even that great under Baby Doc. It was at 50%. He allowed cheap US goods to flood the Haitian market but not to the extent of Aristide did. Another mistake Aristide made was to pressure the French for the 40 billion dollars they owe us. He should have asked them to help us develop our infrastructure thru either a loan, bi-partisan US/Canada, or for-profit projects whereby France benefits. Aristide lacked diplomacy and political experience.
