  • One has to wonder if he was a member of the original SDP why on earth did he join,as their main policy plank was advocating close ties with Europe & with the international community.

    Why didn't he join UKIP if he feels so strongly about this issue.

    We would not have wanted people with his views in our party (as was).

  • @scritti I think the The Liberal Party with the coalition of the SDP were more pro-international, whereas the SDP were not that pro-european, hence why the coalition split up.

    Actually, I think the old SDP really wanted close ties to Europe. Owen, Willams, Rodgers and Jenkins were all pro-European. (Though Owen opposed joining the euro) The SDP and Liberals were fairly close politically with minor differences. The biggest was the SDP favoring a different type of nuclear deterrent (Trident instead of Polaris, I think, I could have them mixed) and the Liberals (excepting, if I remember right David Penhaligon) in favor of complete disarmament.
