Schmidt is cheeky when he says “no one knows why a product like WAVE fails”. Execs in Hollywood always say the same: “Gee you just can’t tell why a movie is a hit or a bust”. That’s BS & everyone who’s a Writer knows it. You can tell from the screenplay if you’ve got a dog or a possible hit. Anyone who plays the equivalent role in web development - User Experience Design - knows why Google Wave failed to gain user acceptance traction. It STARTS with BAD NOMENCLATURE: a "wave" in the inbox (MORE)
@quicksite (2) CONTD -- I'm a User Experience Designer (usability design, information architecture, interaction design, transaction design, nomenclature design, everything that determines what a user sees and can do from the moment they hit the page) -- and I lay out my case in the comments under Google's intro video for Google Wave here at Youtube, titled "Meet Google Wave", watch?v=y1qzIEJAFww . Essentially, they confused people right at start with a new term that was counter-intuitive
@quicksite (3) CONT'D & more important, completely unnecessary to hook people into the concept of a REAL-TIME group collaborative thread where anyone can edit & annotate in real time. If they had just let WAVE be the BRAND NAME of their product - like Picasa - & not name the entire functionality of the threads "wave", they would have had 1000x less friction getting people to grasp what it is. Instead "LET'S BE CLEVER" created complete disconnect from antecedents people already KNEW HOW TO USE.
Once again "we celebrate our failures it's absolutely OK to try something very hard and not beeing successful and to learn from that..." Oh yes. This policy works for your own resources, but not for the external IT Community that were a key partner in the whole wave approach. If you have not run into very serious technical problems, actually showstoppers, pls provide an honorable way forward.
Dear mr Eric Smith (who I admire a lot). Have you perhaps missed something important. The descision to discont Wave almost before you even launced it isn't just a matter of Google resources and internal policies for live or die for internal development projects.
Now we are talking trust in the developer community. Trust that makes people motivated putting time and money into Google technologies.
Now you have fooled thousends of fans. Are you going to quit Crome OS in the same way?
Celebrate our failures... Ok Eric. So we turn back to maybe less promising but stable solutions for collaboration you simply have to pay for.. Like Blackboard
I thought it was great how we had to turn up our speakers all the way to hear him and then have the camera guy yell out his question. Maybe you should put up a description of some sort to warn people? Or are you just hoping we will blast out the TechCrunch name for some free advertising?
seems like that no one in google has any taste of social networking products or products similar to them. Orkut,Buzz, Google Wave. All of them are failures.
V sad that it is being axed so soon. I work in a school, we rolled it out to the kids the day after it become available through G/Apps to vote on World Cup scores. I was going to push for our browsers to be upgraded soon to run video conf through Wave. We were going to embed into our VLE as soon as Google allowed for Apps accounts. Come on Google! It is a fantastic product; but a revolutionary one. People like me were going to wave the flag for you, but we need a lot more time to do it.
With a product like this, a few months worth of general availability does not count as giving it a chance. The early adopters has barely had time at all to bring the general public over. We only started using it at work a few weeks ago (now we know better than to trust something new from Google). This smells like a bad "let's save some money somewhere" type management decision more than a "people will never use this" based decision.
Hard to take this Google. So many of us put so much time into Wave and helping others understand how to use it. Let's hope you have something better on the horizon and soon!
My only thoughts are that Google Me or what ever is coming had better be the 3rd evolution in social media AND social media marketing as Google Buzz was supposed to be.
I am sure you know this, but if Google Me is seen as a failure you can take your toys and go home. Facebook will rule for years. Buzz or no Buzz.

I need Wave within Gmail, because in Gmail I cannot make in-line comments.
