  • Martin Kove @ 1:42 think's he's IT!!

  • As a kid I used to watch the intro and then switch it off.

  • @HammerLex77 OMG!!! Me too! I used to do the same thing with Hawaii 5-0.

  • Sharon Gless was hot in this, and was often hotheaded when one of her arrests was returned to the streets i recall, cant remember her in any other shows though.

  • @paulbrut She was in the US Queer As Folk, also Burn Notice,I met her two weeks after seeing her play in London, really lovely, down to earth lady and she still looks great!

  • Wow, I didn't know Martin Kove was on this! AWESOME!

  • @TheOneWWEGuy who gives a shit about martin kove?

  • The fur coat on the blond cop at the end, was she doing the hooker undercover thing?

  • bang out that sax

  • Great show

  • I Love NY!! :)

  • are those snub-nose .38s they are brandishing?

  • I wonder if that fur coat was police-issue?

  • Bill Conti is a genius like John Williams or Henri Mancini. He wrote sensationally good music. Rocky, Cagney & Lacey, North and South, Falcon Crest... and so many others.

    What a brilliant musician !

  • this theme, the theme from taxi and rockford files....just something magic about those themes

  • die heutigen polizisten hocken nur blöd in ihren büros herum haha

  • die einzigen polizistinnen die ich respektiere :-)

  • Love the way Al Waxman lays the smackdown at the end!

  • If I had this as a ringtone, my phone would rarely get answered.

  • im sure the guy being taken out of the subway at 0:59 is english actor John Duttine.

  • I remember when Points of View on the BBC in the early 80s had an ongoing debate about what Tyne Daly mouths to the flasher in the credit. It excited lots of correspondence as I recall.

TV was so much better with just 3 or 4 channels in the 70s and 80s - everyone watched the same things, it was generally good quality, and people had shared cultural experiences like the one on Points of View. Now TV, like society, is so fractured and fragmented.

  • Every Monday night at 10:00pm, we would be tuned into CAGNEY & LACEY, one of the finest police dramas ever made, with another epic Bill Conti theme! Here's hoping Shout! Factory releases the rest of this series, especially the first episodes with Meg Foster.

  • Bill Conti, the same guy that did music for Rocky, The Karate Kid and Lean on Me as well as TV Shows like Dynasty, The Colbys, Falcon Crest, The Master and The Original American Gladiators

    God Bless Him

Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly still remain Good Friends to this day and they were the Female Starsky & Hutch of the 80's

and also, I think Ice & Zap from American Gladiators would make a good Cagney & Lacey LOL

God Bless Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly on a job well done and Thank You CBS

  • Das war eine tolle Polizeiserie der 80er-Jahre. Habe einige Folgen damals auf SAT.1 gesehen und besonders meine Mutter war von den beiden hingerissen.

  • The 80's intros were the best with the best themes! Dallas, Knots Landing, Cagney and Lacey!

  • FLAWLESS

  • Cunnilingus

  • this was one of my fav's when i was a kid

  • good memories, Love the 80's

  • I only saw this show a few timess but whom is whom? The dark haired women looks real maculine and/or she looks lke she falls for black males

  • @kduideo The dark haired cop is Lacey and she is married to a construction foreman or an architect,I forget which one played by John Karlen. The actress is married to an African-American.The blonde cop is Cagney. She is single and was shown dating a lot.Hope that helped!

  • @3piper I was right!!!!!!!

  • What does Sharon Gless say to the guy who flashes her as they are bringing a suspect out of the subway ? I have always wanted to know this.

  • @kealyc - So do I. We need someone who can read lips, because this and other scenes were filmed exclusively for the opening credits and you can' t find them in any episode. I would also know what Mary Beth says ! Bye.

  • Best theme music ever

  • I RIMEMBAH!!

  • Laverne and Shirley...lol although Shirley is a girl's name.

  • 0:14 Vice City

  • You think the producers of "Rizzoli and Isles" are banking on audiences not realizing they're ripping off this show? Or maybe they figure everyone in the 18-49 demographic has never heard of it.

  • I remember how much I loved this show as a child. I used to tease my sister because she had a clef in her chin like the guy

  • @dbastard1977 Which guy? Martin Kove?

  • Ah,this brings back so many memories of my youth! I would have been about 13 when the series came out and I would always watch it with Mum! I'm just so glad that these top American shows got aired here in England. It seemed that there was no shortage of great TV shows back then, both English and American. Of course, there were crap shows, but the majority were great.

  • @BigBossCat ye same her.used to watch it cos it was my mums favourite.just the music brings back loads of happy memories.

  • Sharon Gless was HOT back in those days.

  • @iw32 she still is a sexy bitch

  • They're a lot less...um...mannish in season two!

  • quality theme song, bill conte is a legend

  • wow, soooo cool, thanks for sharing!

  • she got fat and went to Queer as Folk

  • great show this, what was the polish-american cops name in this? you could tell he had the hots for cagney!!

  • love the theme tune to this!! america just kicks ass when it comes to making tv shows!!!

  • @goldyn12345 Yes!! I have a recording of cop theme shows and this is one of my favorites

  • Notice how shows featuring women in the leads often have gender-neutral or male-sounding names, e.g. Cagney and Lacey, Murphy Brown, Doctor Quinn, etc.

  • @newmark401: Hm, I don't think so. What is then a female-sounding name? :)

  • @Chakram Michaela Quinn, Mary Beth Lacey and Christine Cagney are all plenty feminine-sounding names.

Unless you're on a first name basis with your doctor and arresting officers, I think the show titles are quite appropriate. There are plenty of reasons to get your panties in a bunch about sexism in Hollywood. This isn't one of them.

  • @coconnel51 Give us some examples?

  • @Chakram Mary, Sandy, Laura, Elizabeth, Angela, Emily, Jodie, Jessica, Julia, Natalie, do you really want me to go on?

  • @jradetzky: You missed the topic of the actual discussion. He was talking about the last names from female characters (read his comment), not their first names :).

  • @newmark401

Christine is a gender neutral name? Cops on tv and movies (at least) go by their last names which are as a rule gender neutral.

  • @newmark401

i suppose they could have called them "Connie on Lois"? until you mentioned it, i never really gave a lot of thought to it, but you're right. i wonder - an attempt to play to a male audience? were women big watchers of "police shows" ? it would be interesting to see the demographics on these shows broken down by sex and age group. good catch!

  • @newmark401 'Lacey' is a male sounding name?

  • @newmark401 Female leads with gender-neutral names?? In the case of Cagney and Lacey, those are their last names which are neither male nor female exclusively! Their first names were very feminine, Christine and Mary Beth. When called by their surnames, it was only when working in their male-dominated environment. Christine on a date or Mary Beth at home always went by their first names.

  • Kobra Kai better not mess with Tyne

  • Cagney came to work in a fur coat. What's the deal with that? ..She's a cop....I remeber she came from a family of means which could explain it but it''s not very believable.

  • The all-female band VIXEN made an appearance on one of these shows.

    Where is it?

    Can't find that on YouTube.

  • Does anyone know why they haven't released anymore seasons onDVD? There was so much fanfare following the release of the first season and then nothing happened after that. I wonder if perhaps it didn't do as weel.

  • Sensei Kreese!

  • that bit with the geezer from karate kid putting on his shirt still cracks me up..

  • ja, das kann man wohl anders nicht sagen, ich fand die auch einfach nur genial die zwei Frauen...

  • Listen to 0:20 -0:23 *LOL*

  • that harvey was a bit of a wimp

  • Sharon Gless was one of the most beautiful women. Absolutely loved her and this show. Tyne is a great actress but Sharon had the hot looks and great acting. I miss this show. I, too, wish it could be found in rerun.

  • The entire series including the six Meg Foster episodes are available on itunes.

  • Sidney Clute enjoyed the company of well-endowed men

  • At 0:54-0:56 the man who holds a cup of coffee is Mr. Barney Rosenzweig, the Executive Producer !

  • @ImDany11 ~ Wow, good eye! I had to watch over and over again to catch it! I love this openning..I thought it was Mike Post who did the music, but over at iMdb it appears not so~ Thanks for the sharp observation, and trivia! *Thumbs-up!"

  • @Nansbbgrand - I'm terrific, am I ? Mr. Rosenzweig also appears in the "Choice" episode (3rd series), towards the end just before the dialogue between Chris and Mary Beth at the bar. He also appears in all the 4 episodes of the series "Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years " . If you are in the U.S.A you can watch it Saturday January 15, 2011 at noon on Starz-Encore mystery.

    Bye Bye Ciao

  • @ImDany11 ~ Thanks yet aGAiN! I've been reminding all my online pals about the marathon Encore Mystery is having for Cagney & Lacey, on the 15th--I'm SO exCiTED!!! x))

I'll be tryyying to keep such a keen eye to spot him.. I hope those episodes pop up for the occassion!

  • @Nansbbgrand - Thanks, watch them for me too, because in Italy they have never been broadcast. From here, I can't watch the episodes online, I can't even buy them on I-Tunes or Netflix. They are no longer transmitted by many years in our TVs, and here is never arrived the first season on DVD !

Hard life in Italy for Cagney & Lacey's fans ! :-(

    Ciao.

  • @ImDany11 Well fancy bloody that, so exciting !

  • I can't wait to see them together again on Burn Notice.

  • @FaytLinegod It was good the other night. I'm kind of hoping they'll bring Daly's character back because I can see Maddie reaching out to her and of course driving Michael nuts.

  • Between 0:31 and 0:33... "We got work to do, Cagney; window-shop on your own time!"

At the end... he's the "king" of the office, as well as "King of Kensington," Al Waxman---RIP.

  • @StukInBuf which episode it is?thanks

  • @patriottina87 Wouldn't know what epi's these clips happened.

The gals at the window... must've been for title and theme effect.

However, Mr. Waxman is indeed the star of "King of Kensington;" the episodes are on DVD from that hit Canadian TV show.

  • @StukInBuf sorry i forgot a part of the message... at 0:30 and at 1:09 which episodes are?thanks

  • Gless and Daly made a really good match.

  • I love the part where the guy flashes them and C&L just role their eyes and keep walking. Such a great show. Why doesn't a cable channel somewhere show reruns of this? A whole new generation who wasn't even born in the '80s would enjoy it.

  • That "flasher" scene is forever dug into my memory.

And great music. The midpart of the theme has some elements of "Dynasty" in it. Bill Conti wrote that theme too.

  • Conti did a rather strange Bond score with For Your Eyes Only. It was a little too kitschy-American. I think Marvin Hamlisch got the balance a bit better - more laid back.

  • One of the great tv themes

  • I always wonder why women with short hair and no-nonsense attitudes are always assumed to be lesbians.

  • hab ich früher als kind auch immer gesehen, fands ok,meine liebingserie nicht aber man kann es gucken!!lg

  • Sidney Klute enjoyed the company of well-endowed men

  • I liked Karlen and Tyne Daly. They made a great pair

  • I remember playing this theme in HS concert band. This theme was a tough one to play, but boy was it a blast.

  • I MISS 80's SHOWS!!!

  • this a great show to watch . they sure don't have thees kind of show any more like they use to have.

  • Scarecrow and Mrs King at 8:00, Kate and Ally and Newhart from 9 - 10 and then Cagney and Lacey... my favorite Monday night line up CBS (channel 2 in NYC) in the 1980's. Great memories watching with my mom. :)

  • Very clear sound.

In also Japan this show was broadcast in about 25 years ago. And I watched it every week.

But I didn't know Carl Lumbly appeared in this show until seeing this clip.

  • One of the best TV shows ever created. The stories, characters, acting, theme tune and directing were all brilliant.

    Todays shows could learn something.

  • The part between 0:40 and 0:52 is one of the beautiful piece of music in a tv series ever..

  • @ManicMindTrick I also think that part is better then the main theme.

  • @ManicMindTrick Re: the part between 0:40 and 0:52. At the end of an episode, that is the same part when a voice-over would come in talking about what was coming up next. I always hated the interuption. If the voice over was missing and the music played through, that was what I loved the best! Truth or what?! lol

  • @ManicMindTrick ~ Absolutely agree! Really beautiful--I loved everything about this series!

  • @ManicMindTrick There were some great theme tunes back then. I havent heard this for over 20yrs, and within a few seconds I was transported back to my childhood.

  • @ManicMindTrick Personally, I think the last 5 seconds of sax - wow, the sax was ubiquitous in the 80s - is absolutely wonderful.

  • Comment removed

  • Me too, well that and them speedwalking down the sidewalk...LOL

  • Ahh! the flasher! for some reason that shot is burned into my memory. I agree with the person that said the theme doesnt fit. The actual program always felt like a letdown

  • I like Carl Lumbley as well! He's a hunk too! Sweet!!

  • Love this show. I love the intro where Martin Kove is putting on his shirt!! What a sweet hunk he is!!

  • It's great to be living in New York City and see these old shows depicting the city of yore! God I love it here.

  • I never understood that they kept Sidney Clute(who played Paul LaGuardia) in the credits until the show ended in 1988, after he died sometime just after Season 4 had just started in October of 1985.

  • It was the producers joice to honor him. Quote from imdb under trivia:

"Cast member Sidney Clute passed away during the run of the show. The producers included his name and picture during the opening credits of every episode after his death as a tribute to him."

  • whats with the low volume???

which ones cagney and which ones lacey ??? -- duh

  • thanks 4 he mer=mories

  • I always thought the theme song was a little too upbeat for the show. this seems like a theme song for a sitcom not a serious drama

  • lol

  • every kesbian i know had a crush on cagney when they were teenagers . i guess now all the younger lesbians are into mariska hargitay . cops are sexy

  • Not only lezzies, my grandma made me watch this as a boy and yeah Cagney was hot ... my buddies agree now ^^

  • lol

  • Its a show and a theme I never tire of.

Bet Tyne Daly must have been thinking wel, heres' my 3rd Cagney!

  • I hadn't thought of THAT! You have to wonder what would have happened to this show had M*A*S*H released Loretta Swit to star in the C&L series -- and, of course, what character the producers would have dreamed up to take Margret's place?

(Never did see the first season of this show because it replaced 'Lou Grant' -- which I was a fan of.) Then gave it a try in season 2 and was hooked.

  • I did catch the first episode with Meg Foster as Cagney lately on cable, she and Tyne Daly were similar,Sharon Gless was my favourite Chris Cagney.Yes liked Lou Grant too,not happy The Mary Tyler Moore Complete DVd set is coming out,I already have the first 4 seasons!.

  • this show is still great !

  • Had to play this theme song as part of a High School spring concert. Damn, it was a bitch - not unlike Sharon Gless in this show. BaDumDum.

  • lol

  • Yeah, I see. This agenda is almost by every TV-Show/Series with 2 women as partners/friends in a leading role ;-). Or with men. For example Starsky & Hutch - pro-gay agenda. It's wishful thinking by the gay/lesbian fans.

  • lol at 1:00. people actually do that?

  • Sharon Gless is undoubtedly one of the most influential lesbians of our time

  • Why you think that? She's married since 1991 to Barney Rosenzweig (BTW, a Producer of C&L).

  • oh i know, but that's just a marriage of convenience

  • Come on. That's ridiculous.

Again, why you think that? And can you proof it? Probably not.

  • pmsl

  • Yes very affairs are so conveniant..... Both Sharon Gless and Barney Rosenzweig were with other people, when they got together... but sure she went through all that and drank because she was secretly a lesbian right!!!

  • lol, i thought she was married to a man!!

  • she is, but she's inspired lesbians across the world to explore their deepest fantasies about chick on chick action

  • at the start of the intro is that the tiwn towers?

  • Behind the Bridge, yes.

  • I used to play Little League and Babe Ruth w/ John Karlen's son, Adam. Actually, Karlen's real last name is Karlawicz.

  • polish hey!

  • hey it's martin kove from karate kid hehe. they use to show this on cable on tbs. this theme is better. the show was shown also in the philippines where many women work outside the home. wikipedia

  • Any news on the next season of C and L coming out on DVD?

  • Sadly, no information about next Seasons Releases here in Germany either. We wait too.

  • The whole series is available for purchase on iTunes.

  • Cheers watched a Meg Foster episode the other day on there, very good, hope they make to DVD,one day.

  • John Kreese was on this show???

  • The actor Martin Kove, yes. The character from the Karate Kid-Movies John Kreese, no :).

  • thx for the post been looking for this forever. :)

  • seeing this takes me right back to being a kid in the 80s watching this show with my Mum. great memories and awesome tune:)

  • same here my friend!! it was a fantastic time back then :)

  • I always loved this opening . This is one the best of all times.

  • @sswha224 without doubt!! i was addicted to this show lol

  • Much better then the season 1 intro.

  • For sure :).

  • I so agree with that.

  • good
