U87 is not better than U89. They are two differents mics, the U89 in this video is being used for a wrong propose. It doesnt have the hyped top end the U87 has, thats why the U87 shines on vocals. On the other hand, the U89 has a much more natural (flatter) response, not dull at all. It reproduces what exactly comes in front of it. Great for orchestra, room, OH, much better than the U87 on those sources. It will also be better with high soprano female voices, where the U87 may sound harsh.
I bought my u87 from a studio and I love it! I also have the Tlm 103 which is extremely transpanent but a bit harsh around 8khz. I also own a bunch sm57s and some octavas
@Rustick Yes I had the opportunity to test U87 against AKG C12 which is even more expensive and U87 was much better clearer sound. I think that because it is clear, it's possible to add high frequency EQ and get a sparkling sound because of this. The settings are very important. Thanks for letting us listen to the difference on these 2. BTW, do you own them?:)
Im just finishing up my BSc degree in Media Production at De Montfort Uni in leicester, UK, and they have a variety of microphones available to students,
and with the vast majority of don't even think past an AKG 414 when it comes to Mic choice,
i took it upon myself to put a bit of education out there! :D
I also have a video on Vimeo, comparing a wired & wireless clip mic here:
@Rustick Nice spanish!, i only have the neumann u89 but i think its more versatile from a voice to room percusion drums or anything, and the u87 its more especificaly to the voice but the two mics are amazing.i wish a u87 only for recording voice and the u89 for everthing else

First, I like it that you would compare mic's on youtube. Second i've got some tips if you want to create a more neutral comparison for your viewers.
1. note wich converters and or preamps you have used... for people to calculate possible colouration into the sound.
2. upload your movies on higher soundquality and higher movie quality!
Keep up the good work.

U87AI all the way. It sounds fuller and it is exceptional in all applications.

@griploc1981 Definately agree with you there man! thanks for your input!

Definitely the U87 sounds better. It's much bigger and fatter and the 89 sounds smaller and is probable for brass instruments.
