Man there are so many of these sites where geeks review the latest toy of the week - each one trying to out nerd one another subbing their squeeky voices for personality. I like seeing what's out there but what I wouldn't give for just one - JUST ONE of these u-tube hosts I could stand listening to for more than 15seconds. Each one is more annoying than the next.
I meant to also say in my original comment that the original prop's buttons controlled the wings in a smooth manner. They didn't stop. The longer you held the buttons down, the higher they went. Each button controlled that side. To make them both go up, you had to press them at the same time.
I just got mine today from eBay(new) for $180. Kinda expensive since it really doesn't do much than what was shown on video. They were selling for $60 from real store and went sold out fast. It's for my 5 yr old son who is addicted to ghostbusters(thanks to me) Had to start buying him everything Ghostbusters so I can have them ready for Christmas
Would be better if some paranormal tech guys put a real EMF detector in it and made the beeping and wings react to higher and lower readings within the environment. Then I would buy one. But for $200 and you have to manually do the beeping and wings, that's stupid.
You'd have to shield the dectection sensor from the electronics of the device, because it would pick it up as well. It would require a Faraday cage to separate the two.
You would also want an LED display under the screen. Simply beeping quicker and louder doesn't help much. You want the actual reading to be shown.
i dont like the waybthe wings' come out, halfway, full, nothing. i'd rather have a full range of motion, seems more true to the film version. just jumping halfway up looks cheesy to me. definitely not dropping 200 bucks on this
the actual original prop had a dial on the front of the unit that when up and down. that way Harald aka Egon could use his thumb to control the beeping and the wings at the same time. he turned the dial upwards to make the beeping faster and the wing rise and the turned the dial down for the opposite effect... i was hoping this prop would use the same technique instead of buttons. was disappointed that they didn't. still a nice prop tho i guess
do all of the Mattel pke meters beep like yours? i'm eleven and I'm getting one when I go to my dad's place. so I just wanted to know if all of them beeped.
p.s. another question. how much does it measure? (meaning height).
when i look back when i was 9 years old i had all the 80s toys and now i wish i had not give them away. well i moved to the USA and only could take a small bag with me and had my Ghostbusters and thundercats action toys. i did take the Ghostbuster car and station with me. the very funny thing was also in my bag was knifes hammer and real gun and that was my carry on on the plane. lol yep that was the year 1992. dad sold the Ghostbuster car / station each for $600.00 just orded my PKE prop.
all mattel needs to do now is put out a GHOST TRAP like in the movies or even a proton pack with working lights and sounds. i bet they would bank off it
Wow, that is a really cool feature with the 2 modes. I didn't need that because I never noticed it was different between the 2 movies, but I'm glad it's there cuz it shows a certain kind of care that was put into this by Mattel. VERY COOL! I'm looking forward to other props they may decide to make. While I worked very hard on my Proton Pack to get it as accurate as I could, I'd gladly buy a licensed one if it wasn't too crazy expensive.
The functions are a pretty accurate reproduction of the actual prop. The light speed is controlled by a potentiometer; you can see Harold Ramis kind of struggle with it in GB2.
The real prop has touch switches; as long as you're touching the little metal contacts the arms stay up; when you release the contact they retract back into the shell.
The functions look awfully complicated. You've got to press two buttons and twist a dial close to simultaneously if you want to simulate a rise in PKE energy. Seems it would be much simpler to have a sliding lever control the wings and the speed of noise/lights, but I guess to make it work like that would make the price point higher.
oo bad mattycollector sold out of them, I REALLY want one, maybe they'll get more in stock, and maybe someday they'll have a wearable proton pack replica with lights and sound effects, hey, a geek can dream lol
@myrealghostbusters Did you check your inbox? I sent you the link on where to get them. it's mattycollector(DOT)com go to the Ghostbusters sections and find the pke meter
@myrealghostbusters He says it right in the video 300 times. But I guess you have ADD. Anyways, search for Matty Collector's website. That's where you can "by me one of those", darn-fangled gizmos.
So where the hell was this thing when I was 7 years old and stuck with the ugly blue Kenner deal?So glad I got through to order one of these,it was truly a pain in the ass.....
wow i just had a huge geekasm when he put the meter into speed mode with the lights and sounds beeping like crazy. i am feeling REAL good about this purchase, makes the hour and a half wait time seem so worth it! this thing looks incredible, and the sounds look awsome too. technology has certianly advanced with toys man!
Wow, that is awesome. I'm jealous, will it ever be released in the United Kingdom which is where I'm from? I really, really want one lol! Btw great review. I'm a hugh Ghostbusters Fan, I have the movies and the Complete Real Ghostbusters DVD collection... Fantastic stuff! Great video. 5***** ;-)
One disgruntled, profiteering maker of custom PKE electronic kits couldn't see the 'Like' button through tears of rage, a rage brought on by a predicted loss of an income that he somehow believes he is entitled to.
Great review!!! Could you PLEASE tell... possibly even show us what batteries it uses, how many it takes, and where they go? I noticed there's a hole at the bottom of the handle, near the ON switch... is this a port far an adapter, because the batteries are re-chargable?
Woooooooow! Thanks man, you just saved me $60, lol. It looks good, but it doesn't make the right sounds. Not even close. If the sound was right it totally would have sold me.
Those package things are really stupid. You would call the ghostbusters if you saw a full torso vaporous apparition not the environmental protection agency, AND Peck works for the EPA so.... cute but SO WRONG.
Btw, it's not KINETIC energy the PKE meter looks for, its Psycho Kinetic Energy or ghost movement energy. Kinetic energy is energy gained/lost through motion.
@9fires More like a fancy shoe polisher... hahaha!!! No... really... that was what the original film PKE prop was made from. It's amazing how many film and television props are modified items you see everyday. In shows/films such as: Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters,etc......
This thing is pretty sweet! I like it. A big part of me wishes Mattel would give The Real Ghostbusters some love as well. The Real Ghostbusters had a really cool PKE meter that had more knobs and switches to mess with and looked more "legit" even though it was just a cartoon. This is actually very similiar to the real prop. The buttons controlled the wings, and the dial on the back changed the speed.
I think they should have done with the original sound effect, and not this beeping.
