The problem is this: If a teenage girl gets pregrant there are many negative consequences for her and her family. If a teenage guy gets a girl pregnant this is a much less serious problem for that family (proving paternity is a bit more complicated). I'm not saying that's fair but it is a logical consequence of how sexual reproduction works. Of course I think the sperm donor should man up and accept responsibility, but that does not change that fact that it often doesn't happen.

So if the father is present, that means that the family probably is middle class and well educated and THAT is what makes teen pregnancy and drug abuse less likely. The first time i heard of these insipid "Purity Balls" i was staying at a hotel in Colorado. The main ballroom was full of people, formally dressed, with a band playing. At first i thought it was a wedding reception, but there seemed to be tons of girls (not women) in wedding dresses. I hate how religion teaches people, especially young girls and women to be ashamed of their sexuality. Sex is a wonderful and healthy thing. It's been shown that people who have more sex are happier and it's a great way of getting exercise. It feels GOOD and as long as it is not used in a way that will hurt anyone, I see nothing wrong whether you do it after OR BEFORE marriage. This is all just a way of getting girls to submit to men and be ashamed of themselves.

the bible actually doesn't say anything about feeling ashamed about it. the bible teaches that women should be virtuous. not give it out to everyone. dress in a way that makes you look respectable and not like a slut. i have never read in the bible that i should be ashamed of having sex or the way i dress. only that i should be mindful of how i go about it. it's not the teachings themselves that teach girls that they should be ashamed of themselves it's the teachers who teach it

You read these comments, and you just don't know whether to laugh or cry at some people's ignorance. Every single scientific study ever done shows that the abstinence-only movement is an utter failure. Kids who go through abstinence-only sex ed don't delay sex any longer than kids who go through comprehensive sex ed. And when abstinence-only kids do have sex, they are less likely to use any kind of protection, so they end up with more STDs and unplanned pregnancies.

I also don't think young women NEED to have a great relationship with their father in order to have moral standards or self-respect. I had a very bad relationship with my dad as a teen and I still have very high moral standards. He's making it sound as if teen girls won't learn self-respect if they don't like their dads. That's wrong. People just need to teach their children about safe sex and the dangers of promiscuity...but these "purity balls" are just CREEPY.

Yes Bill, I really agree that these purity balls harken back to ancient, Taliban-esque times. We can see where sexual liberties of all kinds have benefited mankind. For example: 1 in 7 Americans has genital herpes, 1 in 6 Africans has HIV/AIDS, and chlamydia is running rampant among our nation's youth. Clearly the benefits of sexual liscentiousness have outweighed the benefits of virginity and cautious, involved parents.

I've never heard of "purity balls" before, but I was one of those men who pledged abstinence until marriage back when I was a teenager. I thought it was the godly thing to do. As an ex-Christian looking back, what really bothers me is how the religious attitude towards sex teaches people to hate themselves for having sexual desires. The fact that sex and sexual thoughts are regarded as "impure" is disturbing--downright morally repulsive in fact!

One thing to say for premarital abstinence: it spreads the sex around so that most people have a chance. If sex isn't primarily confined to monogamous marriage, most men will only have sex with the hottest women and most women will only have sex with the most powerful men. Leaving the average people feeling like sloppy seconds.
