Sorry, but that´s an popular fallacy. The Porsche 917 didn´t had an Boxerengine. A 12-cyl. Boxerengine is having an Crankshaft with a pivot for each Piston rod. But the aircooled 917-Engines have only six pivots - two piston rods had to work together on one pivot - so it´s an V12, stilted to 180°...

Really, really. Porsche powered the 917 with an air-cooled flat-V12. This engine was an evolution of the Porsche 908-flat-8 boxer engine (that was an Boxer, yeah!) and used identical cylinders to those found on the 908, but differed in that it used a V12 type crankshaft... so it´s technically an V-enginge. Just very flat...
