The raffia splits. So when you take out one piece .........you could actually have two to four pieces there. And if you work with that one piece without take the strands apart first, the raffia will shred.
Nice first effort though.

I've not ever made one with raffia. I use artificial sinew. It's got a nice tackiness that helps hold the needles as you go.
Have you tried walnut slices as your centers? I think they're really pretty and quite easy to work with.
