Republicans aren't against all government intervention whatsoever, they just don't want government getting totalitarian. Protecting the helpless from predation is a governmental function that wasn't in dispute until the latter half of the 20th century, where that assumption was found to infringe upon the convenience of the licentious.

BTW I will use an example of what Ione is talking about. Obama has told russia he will not put missile defense system in eastern europe which was very expensive and not proven work anyway. Obama's move is to try and get Russia to back US leverage on Iran over it's nuclear ambitions. Possibly agreeing to tougher sanctions. If Russia comes on board belief is China will too. That is called diplomacy and it's an intelligent thing to do. Kinda what Ione is talking about in the video.
